Laughing Gas is back?

I saw this on GMA this morning.  It reminded me of the story my grandfather told me about my dad and uncle being born: "I never went in the delivery room.  They gave your grandmother the gas and sent me to the bar.  After awhile they called me to tell me to come back and see my son."

Is this really a thing again? Thoughts?

Re: Laughing Gas is back?

  • I would love it if I could use Nitrous Oxide as a part of my birthing process. I can't even get my teeth cleaned at the dentist without it. Seriously, it helps my anxiety a ton. I HOPE IT IS AVAILABLE!!!!

  • I just saw this on GMA too. Really interesting! I think I would try it if my hospital offers it!

  • My sister had it with my nephew and loved it.
  • Maybe it never left here in Canada, but it was available for DD's birth 2.5 years ago for me with my midwife at our homebirth. I didn't use it but had she suggested it I would have, I've used it for dental work in the past and would much prefer that to some of the other drug options available if things had gone that route.

  • The only part that made me pause was when they made a point of saying that a spinal block doesn't pass to the placenta whereas the gas does, and the baby can be born drowsy.

  • I'd rather avoid it. As painful as birth was for me (no epi the first time and half the second time) I was an active participant. I'm all for not feeling pain, but when I've had laughing gas in the past for dental work, I was so out of it. I remember hallucinating that I was reading a newspaper while in the dental chair. I was so alert and aware when they placed my babies on my chest and I don't want to chance that.

  • Its available in Canada. Apparently it doesn't work for everyone, sound like more people don't like it then people that do.
  • Canadian here - I didn't use it during labor, but used it after labor while they were repairing my third degree tear.  I didn't hallucinate or anything and it didn't take the pain away, but it did numb it substantially.  My labor progressed too quickly for any other drugs or an IV to even be started so gas really was the only option.

My understanding was that the gas does NOT pass to the baby.  It is quickly metabolized by the mom's body.

  • That is awesome! I had no idea it was even an option. Must research!

Not sure if I'd go with it, though. The only laughing gas tried and true with me is the one where my gas comes out in sync to my laughing. DH says it sounds like my butt is laughing along. It's a good time had by all.

So did you not have any local anesthetic?!  They gave me a numbing shot before stitching me up.  The shot hurt bad, but at least I was numb!
SAME, @kitchencolors! I vividly remember jumping at the feeling of the needle and saying, "OW I felt that!" and my OB was like, "You just pushed a kid out.  You can handle a needle."

I understood it as the gas does pass to the placenta, but who knows- I know nothing except this article and the segment on GMA this morning.  I agree that more options are great, though.  It seemed as if this was a good option for "taking the edge off" or for very anxiety stricken moms who couldn't labor effectively because of stress and anxiety.
