Sudden MOTN wakings. Help!

Ds is 17 months old. He didn't STTN until 11 months old with no sleep training. We moved a month ago and his schedule has changed plus he was sick over Christmas. This week he has not been going down in his crib. He will either stand up as soon as we put him down and scream or fall asleep then wake up a few hours later and refuse to go back to sleep without DH or me. DH let him CIO for 30 minutes on Monday for his nap but he just screamed the whole time then slept two hours on my DH after that. He's never been like this and has always gone back down. We have put him in be with us at times when he wakes up at 5am to get him to sleep longer but it is rare. He's been getting worse about his sleep since our move but nothing like this. And the cry is more like he's terrified not just wanting us to come back but we have to come back. Any ideas? Wait it out? What can we do? I'm a zombie at work and we both need sleep!

Re: Sudden MOTN wakings. Help!

  • We have been dealing with the same thing. Kate also caught a cold during Christmas, then she started getting ALL of her teeth on her right side, including molars, which has resulted in more drool/congestion/diarrhea. I rock her to sleep (still, I always have) then she stays asleep in her crib but has been waking anywhere from 1 to 7 hours after she's down. I have resorted to bringing her into bed with me so she'll go back to sleep and stay there. I'm pretty sure it's the teething, and I'll just have to wait it out. If she doesn't improve after it's done, I'll start thinking of sleep training again. But I stay at home mostly (work at home) so it's not affecting me so badly.

  • We were at my parent's for 5 days over Christmas.  Ever since we got back DD has slept like crap. She fights naps and bedtime and wakes up multiple times.  We have had 1 good night in the last 10 days.  She stands, jumps and cries in her crib.  It is heartbreaking.  I have played around with nightlights and sounds to see if that helps.  I am sorry I do not have any advice but wanted to let you know we are going through the same thing.

    Good luck!

  • Charlotte has woken once a night for the past few nights just wanting to be held, which is weird for her.  Yesterday she seemed sick as well so I gave her ibuprofen before bed... no wake-up!  I am guessing her real reason for waking was either teething (which can give her cold-like symptoms) or that she is truly getting sick and had a headache, sore throat, or aches.

We've had more sleep issues lately, too.  DD now stands up every night before laying down to go to bed, and she will sometimes wake up in the middle of the night and want to party.  We sort of had to do CIO after confirming that there's nothing wrong.

We did get a Twilight Turtle and that seemed to help a bit.

  • So glad seeing others are having this issue too. The past 2 weeks have been just miserable with DD's sleep. Like pp have said she will go down to bed then wake up 2hrs later screaming and the only way we can get her done is to lay in bed with her. Then sometimes she won't even go to bed and we will have to rock her to sleep we haven't done that since she was like 6-8 months old.
Good to know there is a wonder week. Figured it was that mixed in with teething and a cold, which has lasted for about 6 weeks now.......

  • Same thing here! OMG I'm ready to shoot myself. Today DS didn't even nap, and last night he woke up screaming at 3am. I had to sit with him while he fell asleep on me, I did not sleep of course, and every time I tried to lay him back in the crib he'd wake up immediately. :(
For the record, DS has been the perfect sleeper since day 1. And his naps were so easy & predictable. Now I'm beside myself.
  • Glad I'm not alone! He's unpredictable and that's the weird part! He STTN Monday and Tuesday, then did not want to sleep alone Wednesday night, then last night STtN again and didn't get up until 7:15! My kid is an early riser so this was not his norm. I guess we will just have to wait it out. I hate not knowing if I will get to sleep each night when I put him down. Blah!
  • We have had sleep issues all week. The worst of it was last night when she got up at 2:00 and did not go back to sleep until she was at the sitter's where she fell asleep in the middle of breakfast. I am blaming the 6 new teeth that appeared out of nowhere, including 2 molars.

  • My kid did end up getting actually sick and when I was looking in our AAP book about what might be wrong, it mentioned sleep troubles as a symptom of ear infections.  After our doctor appointment - yep, she has a double ear infection, which explains why she wanted to be held instead of laying down!

So, maybe your LO is sick?

Separation anxiety? DS is the SAME way...except he has never been a good sleeper. But when he turned around 12-14 months old, he started to seem scared and like you said - as if he NEEDS me to come in there with him. I asked a sleep trainer and she said it sounded like separation anxiety and that it can come and go in spurts all through childhood. So good luck and just know that you are not alone!!
ETA: It definitely gets worse when he is cutting teeth, too :(
