2nd timers and up - what will you do differently this pregnancy? Or the same?

For me, I will try to enjoy being pregnant more, knowing that this is probably my last pregnancy since we are only having two. Also if my back flares up I won't wait as long to go in and get seen for it like I did last time. I will also like to exercise more and not drink so many sugary drinks.

I will still try for a natural birth like last time - it's sounds crazy but it was actually awesome!

  • Agree cherish this pregnancy as it's probably our last. Eat better and drink more water and excercise. As far as my #1 goal with this baby hands down breastfeeding until a year!

  • Chances are we will be living in Europe somewhere when baby comes so I would love to embrace the birthing culture in that country.
Actually to be completely honest I just want to have a unmedicated birth experience.  My first labor was not at all what I wanted and I'm still a little bit in mourning over that so I'm hoping to heal with this one.  If that means a home birth or a hospital birth with midwife then I'm for it.
As far as pregnancy goes I don't want to treat it like its a condition.  I'm going to go on with life but still marvel at what my body is doing.

  • I plan to chill out and enjoy this pregnancy a bit more - I was a tight ball of nerves the last time. Lists and charts and books re: pregnancy everywhere!  Also, I'm hoping for a water birth and to breastfeed longer this time around.

  • I've already got nausea medication. I'm not messing around this time. First appointment, got my OB to write me a prescription. Now I have it on hand if I need it (last time m/s started around 8 weeks).

First tri I'm still following ALL the food rules because I am a spaz, but I'll probably let up further down the line.

I will definitely enjoy my bump more! I didn't show for a long time last time and I missed my bump PP.
  • Will do much the same, however, I will try to not worry so much this time around.

Going to try my best to exercise a little to try to keep pre-e at bay and GD in check (Yes--I'm just assuming I'll have this again).

Going to try to be better at keeping a journal of pregnancy this time. Need to relish every little detail since this will likely be our last.

  • I need to not do the stereotypical pregnant woman free pass to eat what I want - I want to keep it in check. I would like to get a pregnancy yoga thing, I think that would help with my back and potentially see a chiro if necessary.

I don't know if this will be our last, but I will savor all the kicks and the stretchy pants haha.

  • I'm also trying to plan better since I know what to expect for some things. As soon as I got my BFP I started making extra at some meals and freezing the left overs. I know there will be days where I either can't stand the smell of stuff cooking or am just too sore/exhausted. This way I can just pull something out of the freezer instead of making my family PB&J for dinner four nights in a row. ;)

Great idea to start cooking extra now!

I plan to continue exercising which is something I didn't do with my previous pregnancies. I'm looking forward to how that's going to help me recover after this one.

I am also actively working to not let myself get freaked out about labour. My last little guy came so fast that we almost didn't make it to the hospital and when I think about it it still makes me anxious. I've already spoken to my dr. and we have a game plan so that will help. On a side note...they actually have in my chart "rapid birth" like a label. It makes me chuckle.

  • I am going to be smarter in my eating choices. Although I was eating relatively healthy the last two times, my metabolism and sugar levels do not like pregnancy, and I gained 40 and 55 lbs. So I am meeting with a dietician early this time and trying to stay within normal ranges. :)

  • Won't:
Freak out over every little thing
    Obsessively plan
Buy a ton of stuff (hoping to reuse most of it!)
Have a wrist injury that plagued me until my baby was 8 months old... making bf'ing very hard after he got bigger.

    Will:
Try to stay more physically active than the last pregnancy
Have a routine c/s at 39 weeks (last time resulted in an emergency c/s after 12 hours of active labor and 3 hours of pushing)
Hope to EBF a little longer (I went to almost 4 months last time, then transitioned to formula - I hope to go longer this time)
Hopefully also only gain like 25 lbs (I'm overweight - need to be careful about that again)

  • Overall, I had a really great pregnancy and delivery with DD.  I hope to do many of the same things...

    - Workout until I deliver & stay active
    - I'll have a RCS (we had a scheduled c/s with DD because she was breech)
    - EBF until at least one

I hope to not gain as much weight as I did the first time around, mostly because I'm starting this pregnancy about 10 pounds heavier.

Mostly, I want to really cherish this pregnancy since this will most likely be our last.  I LOVED being pregnant with DD, but after my loss a few months ago, I feel like I might be more nervous than excited this time around.  I don't want my fears of what "might happen" to take away from the excitement of this baby or this pregnancy, so I need to keep reminding myself that.

  • Relax. And pay more attention to my body.

I apparently was in labor on a Friday afternoon and complaining about gas pains and back pain. This was the same week I said I would slow down. By 4 am, my water broke and 8 hours later I delivered 10 weeks early.

I really don't want that for my family again. We got lucky that these two are healthy.
  • Oh - and stand up for myself. The doctor who was on call who delivered the girls was a total jerk and I hated my nurse. I already made my doctor (or his partner) promise to deliver me and I will kick a nurse out if I have to. I don't want to feel bitter about my delivery.
  • Knowing that this is probably my last, it makes me want to soak in every moment, especially when the kid starts kicking....plus, all the stuff that was mentioned above.

I hope to not gain as much weight (42 lbs last time and it was a bitch to get it off).

I'm going to let go of the "Business of Being Born" type of lessons (as lovely as they are) because this time around, the only thing that matters is my baby's health.  I went to 42 weeks with DS because I didn't want to get induced and believed that my body and baby would know when it was time.  DS was born with severe meconium aspiration and ended up fighting for his life in the NICU of the biggest children's hospital in the region for 2 weeks.  It was awful.  Thankfully he is ok, but seeing your baby ventilated and hooked up to a hundred machines, doped up on morphine, not being able to hold him until he's 6 days old, coming home to an empty nursery every night.... not worth it.  If I can get induced at 37 weeks, sign me up. Bring on the Pitocin.

  • Different: This time, I will not worry so much about having a loss. Worrying won't be able to stop it if it's going to happen. We're also finding out the sex with this one, last time we were Team Green.

Same: Enjoy feeling good while it lasts. Enjoy my sleep and free time while I have it. Try not to gain too much weight (last time I gained 26 pounds, I'd like to keep it under 30 again if possible).

  • I am hoping that my MS will not be as horrible as it was last time so I can actual get up and move around. I think I was pretty laid back during my first pregnancy, food wasn't an issue b/c I could only handle certain things. I would love to be able to have an un-medicated birth like some of you other ladies. I made it to 7cm last time and gave up :(  My main thing that I am focusing on this time is my stress level. I refuse to let the little things get to me like last time!

  • I am definitely not going to let the doctors make me a paranoid crazy lady this time. I like the practice I go to a lot but my son was a large baby and they kept sending me for additional U/S just to tell me what I already knew and it made me worry that I was going to injure him during delivery. In the end I ended up having an unplanned c-section because his big 'ol noggin was just too big and I was fine with that. This time we're just going to plan the c-section and be done with it because I have no hope that this baby is going to be any smaller than his/her brother. Yay for genetics!

@ceridwen21 - I'm so glad your DS is okay! I've heard of that happening more than I'm comfortable with, so even though I do like all that BOBB stuff, I would always choose to be induced no later than 1 week after my due date.

  • 1. Better attitude. I told my DH that he is allowed to snap me out of negativity and not let me mope this time. I regret the poor attitude I had with LO#2 ("I'm too full.... I can't enjoy my food...Nothing looks good on me...I feel too sick...etc. etc.)

    2. Chiropractic care. I had a natural home waterbirth for my first birth (who was actually LO#2, as LO#1 is adopted) and totally LOVED it. My MW was amazing, my husband was a superb coach, we all worked together so well, and surprisingly, I didn't need my MW as much as I thought we would. Birth just...happened. It was beautiful and so natural and perfect. I'm really excited to be working with my MW again, but would like to do chiropractic care this time. I know it can  make a huge difference as to how you carry your baby/baby's position, but also, particularly, how MAMA feels ;)

@Stasi - Thanks. We are so grateful that we got excellent medical care (not just in the NICU, but in the year that followed from all the specialists at the hospital). It was an awful experience to go through and I don't wish it for any parent.

  • I had a very healthy pregnancy the first time around.  However, one of my daughters has autism, so I am not taking ANY CHANCES with any possibly frowned upon behavior.  Things I did last time that I won't do this time:

    - Take baths
    - Eat sushi (I have to admit, I ate it every few weeks my entire pregnancy)
    - Have an occasional glass of wine (I had two or three the whole pregnancy, but still) or even alcohol free wine / beer

I also want to give breastfeeding more of a shot with this baby.  I gave up after a few weeks with the girls.

One more, I want to exercise more and not gain as much weight (or even close).  I stopped exercising early on when I was pregnant with the girls because it gave me weird cramps.  Although I was successful in bringing them to full term, I gained 65 pounds and haven't gotten even close to my pre-pregnancy weight since.

I want to exercise as long as I can and eat much healthier.  Hopefully.  This means fewer trips to Cold Stone Creamery this time around. :)
