Re: thoughts on 3 day cleanse

  • Uh. Define "cleanse"? Are you talking about a 3 day fast? While pregnant?

  • I have done 12 day cleanses before, I don't think I would suggest doing one while preggo, but not preggo i don't see anything wrong with them. They make you feel so good :)
  • I don't suggest any "cleanse" while pregnant.  Seriously?

  • I did a juice fast for several days at one point.  It wasn't done as a cleanse, though.  I felt great while on it, but when I ate solid food again it was bad...very bad.  I could not leave the bathroom for some time.  I think I probably should have eased back into the solids a little slower.

  • I think it's kind of just a fad personally. I usually just opt for healthier, long range choices. I also think cleanses and fasts mess with the metabolism.

  • Google: 3 day juice cleanse.  Loads and loads of info.

Totally not healthy or normal IMO (under most circumstances)

I think "cleanses" are a bunch of BS. you are basically starving your body for a few days. not a good idea for anyone, IMO.

  • I did Dr. Oz's 3 day juice cleanse (not KU) and I was not hungry as it was really smoothies not juice.  It was really a bunch of foods that are high in anti-oxidants.  I felt good afterwards and would do it again.
  • thanks everyone.... i was thinking all the same thoughts not knowing too much to back up my argument to him ;)

At least you get some protein from the smoothies. But this is one of the reasons I am not a fan of Dr. Oz. This is just my personal opinion but advocating things like this (and other fad crap like the green coffee bean extract) is really irresponsible when he's supposed to be a credible medical professional.

I really liked his book on pregnancy but I just cannot get behind show because I feel like he has an opportunity to be so much better than this stuff and is squandering it.

Maybe I should have saved that for Thursday...

  • What @pandadair said.

While I love juicing and all, I don't believe in "cleansing" using juices. I also think it's a fad that is terrible for you.

I think If you are eating a clean diet and don't have issues with your organs, your body cleanses itself. That's what your liver and kidneys are for.

Suggest he check out going on a "clean food" diet. (Basically cutting out crap and focusing on whole, natural foods and nothing processed). He can Google it and there are a ton of options.

  • I've done cleanses in the past. Mostly I did them because my organs weren't doing what they were supposed to...which was mostly because I wasn't eating properly. I suggest eating clean, drinking plenty of water, and adding some chia seeds (additional fiber and energy) to your food. If the purpose of the cleanse is to feel better, that should help. If it's weight loss....that should help. ;)
  • I also agree that cleanses aren't biologically necessary- you have a system in place for that. I know the big draw is more mental for most people- the idea of a "clean slate" or jump start a diet. But like some have pointed out it can really screw up your digestion depending on how long you do it. I.e. You body will actually down regulate the production of some disgestive enzymes so when you go back to solids you have some serious bathroom time on your hands. In addition, typically people fall into that yo-yo dieting mode where you can start to obsess over solid foods and usual crap foods and you end up gorging on them once your time is up. The best course of action is to just change your diet in general- if he likes to more dramatic change then try a 30 day real food challenge like Whole 30 with support.

  • A cleanse is really just resetting your cravings.  It's a bit of a gimmick so that you won't be tempted to buy the same sugary groceries that make people feel all gunky.  I think you'd be better off just cleaning out the cupboards and buying all whole foods.  By the way, day 3 of breaking the sugar habit super sucks, but after that it can feel amazing.

  • @spacepotatoes you're absolutely right about him. A lot of his info is incomplete or faddish. But people take it as gospel. It's scary really!

One of the reason I chose his cleanse was because there was actual food. I would never ever do a purely liquid cleanse/ diet mainly because I would turn into a raging b***** without food
  • This is all great stuff ladies, thanks for sharing!!!

  • @spacepotatoes I can't take Dr Oz seriously at all.  I didn't even like his pregnancy book.  It seemed like he was yelling at future moms and insulting future dads.
  • I am a big fan of the BluePrint Cleanse 3 day level 2. It is one of the things I miss most about pregnancy. I usually do it quarterly. It can get pricey but if you Like them on FB they usually run 20% off promotions every month or so. A similar service is Cooler Cleanse but I am not a fan of coconut water and that is in one of the bottles.
  • Juice cleanses are not good. I second the 30 day clean eating "cleanse" - no sugar, dairy, processed foods, etc. The cravings can get hard a week into it, but it is healthy & can break bad habits/establish better ones.

  • My husband and I did a "cleanse" a few years ago as a part of a health study he was participating in. I did it too for support. It basically just required us to cut out a ton of stuff from our diet and very gradually start adding things back in. For example - the first two or three weeks we were only allowed meat and vegetables (and maybe nuts or something else, I don't remember). Spices were ok, excluding salt, but we couldn't use butter or oil to cook the meat - only chicken broth. No dairy, and we could only have one serving of fruit a day. We also had to make this lemon water concoction that was like 10 lemons per one gallon of water (extremely sour!!!) and we had to drink a certain number of ounces before each meal and bed.

Then in the next phase we were allowed to start adding back food gradually. I think certain dairy products were allowed back first.

It was really intense, and meals were very very bland and full of veggies. I lost 12 pounds in the first two weeks which was a bit alarming to me. We only lasted about three or four weeks into the program. After the initial shock of removing all processed foods and such from our diets, we did actually both feel really good. But I was worried we were both loosing too much weight way to quickly - so we stopped.

Obviously this program was nuts and too extreme - but if your husband wants to do a "cleanse" I would suggest going the route of just removing processed foods and focusing more on vegetables and smart proteins. They say to look for food that have the shortest ingredient lists (honestly I don't know why-you'd have to google it).

    GL!
