A12ers who are losing weight and getting fit

So, I watched the Dr. Oz show today.  I do not normally watch any daytime TV, but I was home sick and trying to watch for closings and delays on the ticker.  Anyway, I caught the Dr. Oz show and he was talking about this two-week weight loss jump start.  I hate fat diets, but I thought this was fairly balanced and comparable to the way I lost weight in 2011: lots of protein, lots of veggies.

Anyway, here is the link for those who are interested:  https://www.doctoroz.com/slideshow/dr-ozs-2-week-rapid-weight-loss-plan-instructions

I like that he recommends morning smoothies; I did that when I was losing weight and continued while pregnant.  I think it's weird that he says one 6 ounce serving of protein per day because I usually have a lean protein at lunch AND dinner or I am hangry in the afternoon.

  • Meanwhile on The Chew his daughter made this yummy looking gem. https://abc.go.com/shows/the-chew/recipes/9-Layer-Bar-Daphne-Oz. they were teasing her about how unhealthy it was and she told the audience not to tell Dr Oz what she was making. Haha! Thanks for the link.

  • Thanks for sharing.  A friend of mine sent me a meal plan for the Simple Green Smoothies Fresh Start 21 Day Cleanse Guide.  It's similar but is a bite-by-bite meal plan for 21 days with no wiggle room.  I think it would be hard to stick to, espchally on days where your short on time to prep, cooks, etc - and need something quick like canned (reduced sodium) chicken noodle soup for lunch.  Oh no the shame!

@piphgirl - I've been thinking of adding smoothies to my breakfast routine a few days a week.  Can you reccomend any good (EASY) recipies?  The one in the link you sent seems pretty easy.  But some other recipes I've found (expchally for green smoothies) seem to have a ton of ingredients and seem like they'd take forever to prep, make, clean up after.  I'm short on time in the mornings!  Thanks!

  • @Toni79 - Here's what goes into my smoothies.  My registered dietitian helped me come up with this recipe a couple years ago, so I guess it's professionally approved?  :o)

    1 Banana
About a 1/2 cup of Greek yogurt (I use Fage 2%)
A scoop of almond butter (it's probably about two teaspoons)
A scoop of strawberry-flavored protein powder (Bluebonnet is my favorite brand)
A couple handfuls of frozen strawberries
A small handful of another frozen fruit of choice - usually pineapple.  Sometimes it's blueberries or mangoes or oranges.

Throw all of this in a blender and blend!  I put things in in that order (starting with the banana and the yogurt) because it just seems to blend better that way.  I have a KitchenAid blender, so it's not fancy or anything - you certainly don't need a VitaMix for this.  It takes about five minutes to make.  The dishes it creates are the blender (I fill with water and soak so it's easier to wash later) and a spoon from scooping out the yogurt and almond butter.  I also don't put anything green in mine since I eat veggies at lunch and dinner.  I need the protein, healthy fat, and fruit from the smoothie, not a veggie.

For lunches, I always bring leftovers.  We typically double recipes at home so we have 1-2 days of lunches.  Sometimes I triple the veggies and don't double the starch so that my lunches are just a lean protein and a bunch of veggies.
  • @piphgirl - Thanks for the recipe!  It sounds alot easier to prep and clean up after than some of the others I've read!  I'm imagining scrapping dried kale off my blender!  Yuck!

Also, I agree with your origional post that 6 oz of lean meat seems low!  If I saved that for dinner, I don't think I could make it through the day!

  • @Toni79 - My RD actually told me that I needed to eat MORE meat. After my first meeting with her, I came home and was like, "DH, my RD says we need to eat more steak." He really liked my six months of weight loss!  She (my RD) was all about lean protein, healthy fats, and veggies.

I would do 4-6 ounces of lean protein at lunch AND dinner, along with a large veggie portion and a small starch like brown rice or roasted red potatoes.  We like quinoa as our "starch" as well.  When I do this meal configuration, protein smoothies in the AM, and a healthy afternoon snack, I lose weight.
  • @ piphgirl - Thanks!  I like your edits to the plan.  I think it makes them a little more realistic and filling.

  • Great tips and tricks ladies!!  Does anyone have a good green smoothie recipe? @piphigirl what do you think about green smoothies vs. fruit smoothies??  I always thought green was the way to go but noticed your smoothie recipe is all fruit.

  • @britvahok - I have never made a green smoothie or read about them much. Like I said, I eat veggies with lunch and dinner so I have never felt the need to add more green to my breakfasts. But I eat ZERO fruit because I don't like it, so the smoothie is a good way for me to get fruit.

The other purpose of a smoothie for me is morning protein.  I don't like eggs, so the protein smoothie is a good alternative.  Otherwise I just want to eat toast, which does not fill me up.
