Fort Riley - any experience with IACH?

Hi everyone! I'm new to the board. I'm 6 weeks pregnant with our first. We are currently at Fort Riley. I have my first official appointment on post on 1/27 with a nurse and then an ultrasound/ doctor's appointment on 2/7. Does anyone have experience with IACH on post here? I have had mixed experiences there for other healthcare, and I'm debating if it would be best to switch to Standard and go to Manhattan Women's Group/ deliver at Mercy. How soon do I need to decide? Would it be best to decide before I even go and begin care with a doctor on post? I should probably also add that we live in Manhattan, about 25 minutes off post. Any advice either way?

My SIL worked at both so I will ask her. They lived closer to Manhattan. I also know the Irwin directors admin, I can ask her too.

We're at Riley and I had my son at IACH, a little over a year ago.  Like every practice - civilian or military - there were providers I didn't like, and providers I did like.  I think it depends on what you want to get from the OB clinic.  I was fine being on Prime, I didn't think there were any issues big enough to cause me to switch to Standard.

To be honest, you can really decide whichever.  You could always keep the two appointments, try the clinic out and see if it's for you and then switch, or just switch now. It's really what you're most comfortable with.

Edit: The labor/delivery rooms are really nice, the nurses in L&D were fabulous.  Most of the providers I saw were great.

  • I had both of my kids on post at Riley. I had good experiences. I heard mixed things about Mercy depending on what people were looking for in their birth experience. I wanted natural birth with delayed cord clamping and baby to room in with me the whole time. I felt very supported in all of that at IACH. My good friend wanted a nursery available and was very happy at Mercy. I loved the midwives at IACH and would recommend any of them. My fav docotor there is Dr Sessions. There were some I didn't like and they were easy enough to avoid. I loved all the nurses in labor and delivery except for one, an older lady. Try it out for your first appt and it you don't like it it's easy enough to switch to standard.
Dr. Sessions was definitely my favorite doctor!  I also LOVED Kyanna Kuntz one of the midwives.  All the midwives I saw were excellent.

  • Thanks ladies! Based on your advice, I think I will keep my appointments and check out IACH. I think the doctor I am scheduled with for my first appointment is one I saw briefly before, Dr. Long? Does anyone have experience with him? Also, does anyone know when the new hospital opens?

  • I saw Dr. Long once, he was nice.

I've heard so many different dates on the new hospital that honestly, who knows at this point.

  • I live in Manhattan as well. I stayed here and went through the Women's Health Group. I loved my doctor. Technically I was classified as a high risk due to being a diabetic but my doctor took good care of me and I never had to see a specialist. I also had a good birth experience at Mercy. I ultimately ended up having a c section and I got to have skin to skin contact right after she was born and I was able to start nursing while in recovery.  Since my husband was deployed and I work full time I decided to stay in Manhattan for all my appts and the birth.
