Maternity vs. regular bathing suits

We are going to the bahamas in early February and my sister loaned me two maternity suits - a one piece and a tankini. I will be 19-20 weeks when we go and so far haven't really shown since I'm a FTM. Wondering how you ladies feel about pregnant women wearing "regular" bikinis. Is there any concern with getting sun or too much sun on a pregnant belly? I'm thinking of ratating the maternity suits with a few I already have if I feel comfortable in them at the time.

Re: Maternity vs. regular bathing suits

  • I think if you feel comfortable in a regular one, go for it. Just make sure to try it on far enough in advance- I know a few people who were sure their bikinis would be fine and realized their bodies had changed in ways they didn't realize and the swimsuits wouldn't work as planned.

  • I was just in St. Croix over the holiday break, and I brought one regular bikini and one regular one piece from my non-pregnant days. I had slim pickings because my boobs were completely indecent in all my normal bikini tops, and while I don't mind bearing my bump, I wasn't sure all the families on the beach would appreciate x-rated attire :)

The bikini ended up being fine but I HATED wearing my one piece. There wasn't enough give for my bump, so I ended up feeling super constrained and uncomfortable. I was only 17 weeks at that point, so you might be a little bit bigger and want a little more room to move. I personally think pregnant tummys are the cutest, so I'd say go ahead and show it off!

Per your concern over sun on a belly, I have a history of skin cancer so I'm super sensitive to the topic. My OB and dermatologist said we're no more sensitive to the sun now than before and there are no additional complications to be concerned about. Just wear and reapply plenty of sunblock!

  • I wore my regular bikini during the summer with my first. She was an October baby so I was definitely rocking a bump. I didn't care.

As long as you are comfortable, wear what you want!

  • I just went on vacation last week, and had no problem with a regular bikini. I did feel super fat next to the gorgeous, thin Italian women staying at our hotel, but everyone thought it was cute (or at least that's what they said to my face :) )If you're comfortable with it, go for it.

  • Thank you all for your input. Good to know there is no concern with sun on the belly. I always wear sun screen so will of course make sure to keep that up! I guess once the trip is closer I'll decide how I feel in my bikinis and if I should bring them along, if they're fitting
  • I think the sun exposure precautions are the same for pregnant women as they are for the general population.  Except, of course, to be mindful of not overheating.

I just went to a waterpark (indoors) with my family the week before Christmas.  I brought a pre-pg tankini and a bikini.  The first day I wore the tankini and honestly, felt pretty frumpy and matronly.  I felt like you couldn't tell if I was pregnant or had a leftover belly from my 2 LOs.  The second day I wore a bikini and felt so much better.  My belly was small, but round and you could definitely tell I was pregnant.  Not only that but my bigger boobs filled out my top quite nicely.  I felt cute and confident.  I would say wear the bikinis if you are so inclined!  :)

  • I just got back from Florida and totally rocked the bikini.  I bought a tankini and felt like I looked way bigger and didn't feel as confident.  For the bottoms, try getting a pair that tie on the sides.  Have fun!
  • I wore a regular bikini on a beach trip when I was almost 6 months pregnant with my son. I bought a larger size and applied lots of sunscreen. I had no issues.

I'm sorry, but I think maternity swim suits or one pieces are a must when you're pregnant.  I think being pregnant is beautiful, as it took me A LOT to get here so my sentiment may even mean more than some, but I would NEVER put on a bikini with a pregnant belly unless I was newly pregnant and had no bump to speak of at all yet.  I just think women that do this are looking for attention and even more-so I just plain old think it's gross.  There are tons of one-pieces out there, both maternity and non that would work great and look really cute with a belly.  I'm not a fan of tankinis regardless because I think in general they're matronly even on Victoria's Secret models they're not cute.  Sorry, just my opinion.

Edit: Just wanted to add the below link.  I actually own this in black and mint.  It's super cute and I get TONS of compliments on it - I've had it since last summer before I was pregnant.  The bust area is a little small, so I would just order a size larger than you normally would.  It's ruched and strechy throughout the tummy area, so it'll be perfect for the middle stages of pregnancy.  I'm going on a ski trip with my family at the end of the month, and since I won't be able to ski I'm planning to go in the pool at least afterwards with them and this is what I'm planning to bring with me.

  • Rock the bikini! Your belly is beautiful~ and there are not many times in your life that you will be growing another human being, be proud of it!
We kayaked up until 2 weeks before DS1 came and I wore a bikini every time. LATHER up the sunscreen tho~ your skin is SO much more sensitive!
  • There is absolutely nothing wrong with showing off your bump in a bikini. Never in my life have I thought of a pregnant belly as "gross". However, for anyone in search of a modest yet sexy one piece to wear while pregnant, Modcloth carries a whole line of gorgeous retro bathing suits. I own the black one, it has plenty of stretch in the belly area thanks to the ruching, and it always makes me feel sexy. I can't wait to wear it when it's warmer and I'm actually showing.

  • I wore a bikini on a beach vacation 3 weeks before I gave birth to my daughter and I didn't feel the least bit "gross". I probably felt more confident then I did normally in a bikini and yes it was more comfortable. I actually regularly wore a one-piece too for swimming and always felt so restricted in it. And getting off a wet one-piece when you're very pregnant - that was a sight to see.

  • I have been thinking about what I would do personally and I think for me, it will be hard to wear a bikini even though it seems more practical, just for personal reasons. This does not by any means mean I agree with the PP who said pregnant women shouldn't wear them. I think if you are confident enough to wear one, go for it. You are growing a human in there and should be proud of it! I think I'd just be more comfortable in a one piece or a tankini, personally.

    Baby Birthday Ticker Ticker

  • @babygabe64 I don't see anything wrong with that either. Just like some women feel more comfortable in a one piece when not pregnant, you're going to find women who feel the same with a bump. It's all about doing what feels comfortable and works for you.

@FutureMrsW9 saying it is gross of a pregnant woman to wear a bikini is just... so beyond wrong. It is another form of "fat shaming" and is hurtful. If a woman is comfortable wearing one and flaunting her bump, good for her. People are going to stare at a pregnant woman in a swim suit regardless of how many pieces it is.
Agreed. I was pretty disappointed with that post.

    Edit: bad grammar :)

  • Im leaving to mexico friday! And im proudly flaunting my bump at almost 19 weeks! I hsve lots of coverups got bigger tops to fit my new massive boobs but im comfertsble and i know im pregnant and proud of it my hubby loves my preggo curves :)
  • I am also going to Mexico at the end of February so I will be about 22 weeks then and I checked out maternity suits but the only ones I could find were kind of ugly and not flattering, I ended up getting a really awesome two piece tankini with a sheer flowing style top (they call it a flutterkini) which will show the bump a little but still be more comfortable for me. I have never been super comfortable showing myself in a little bikini but that's just me. I say wear whatever makes you feel beautiful :) Here is a pic of the suit which I found so pretty when on and really flattering. I got black bottoms though. This pic is not of me, its a model lol

  • I was just giving my opinion on and OPEN FORUM.  I hate the way pregnant women look in bikinis, I think they just look plain ridiculous regardless of their body type or how they're carrying.  And seriously gimme a break with all the "fat shaming" BS.  I would NEVER say something to someone or make fun of them - I'm far from perfect, but c'mon, there are definitely women out there, pregnant or not, that should NOT be wearing certain things to the beach.  It's all about dressing for your body type, whether it's regular clothes or a bikini, wear what flatters you....and bikinis do NOT flatter pregnant women no matter how you spin it.  Sorry, they just don't.

Thats your opinion, and clearly many other people on here feel differently. Just like you can share your opinion, we can share how we feel about it. This is like the person who said her friend shouldn't wear fitted tops when it was only bloat, that her bump had to be to a certain point before the tops were acceptable.

I'm not even going to touch your attitude that your "sentiment may mean even more than some".

Thinking of a pregnant bump as gross is so weird and wrong on so many levels. Telling other women they need to cover up is ridiculous. You cover your bump and I'll walk around in my bikini, fitted maternity shirts and enjoy my pregnant body instead of thinking I and every other pregnant woman is gross. I have some 1950's maternity top patterns, would you like them?
I think "gross" was the wrong choice of words, so I apologize for that.  I, of all people, do NOT find being pregnant gross at all.  It took DH and I a looooong time and a lot of money to get where we are, and I'm reveling in every minute of it as my belly gets bigger - I love it!  I just find it unflattering and don't think pregnant women should strut around in bikinis - it's just my opinion.  That said, I'm actually a fan of pregnant women wearing fitting clothing and showing off their bumps that way - I think it's looks better and more attractive than frumpy baggy clothes.

You hate the way pregnant bellies look!?! Hate seems like a pretty strong word to use in my opinion. I think your opinion is yours and perhaps you think its valid but its obviously meant to make some of the other moms here feel shame about showing their beautiful pregnant bellies. I agree you have to dress to fit your body but you also have to dress in whatever makes you feel like your beautiful self. If you want to show it then show it, if you want to cover it up then do so. Your hateful opinion makes me feel like this board just jumped back in time 40-50 years, maybe we should all wear mumus to hide ourselves and the life we are creating inside our bodies. Its an amazing and lovely thing that should be celebrated not shamed or hidden away. Your right this is an open forum and thus you should prepare for some backlash when using words like hate and ridiculous etc. when talking about the beauty of life.
My opinion is not hateful, it's just my opinion.  Who would hate pregnant women??  That's just an absurd accusation.  And you completely miscontrued my words.  I hate the way pregnant women look in bikinis - I don't hate pregnant bellies.  Otherwise, I think pregnant women glow and look beautiful!  And frankly, if other moms are going to feel ashamed based on my opinion on some TB board, then I'm thinking they're the ones with issues, not me.  If I felt bad about every person who ever said something mean to me about my appearance or something I wore in my life I'd be a pretty sad depressed woman.  This is also just my opinion about swim suits.  I personally think pregnant women should wear fitted clothes and show off the bump as much as possible.  Fitted clothes are much more flattering on a pregnant belly than fumpy loose fitting things (aka "mumus").  We just don't need to be showing the world our bare pregnant bellies - it's just not necessary.

Actually, it's about how comfortable you feel. Most women do feel more confident in something that is figure flattering, but what one person finds flattering, another might not. I happen to think pregnant women CAN look fantastic in a bikini, so in my opinion they are wearing what flatters them. Sure, I might not want to see them in a thong and a tiny string top with triangles that barely cover the nipples, but you know what? I don't want to see anyone in that, regardless of how fit they are. But they're still entitled to wear it if it makes them feel good doing so.

@FutureMrsW9 is it the actual skin on the bump that you don't like to see? Because it sounds like you don't mind seeing preggo bumps in general. I'm just so curious because I don't see much of a difference between wearing a bikini vs one piece to a beach with a big bump except just seeing the skin itself.

    Edit: spelling

  • It's all in what you are comfortable with.  I'm in FL and I rocked my regular bikini with my first pregnancy the entire time.  I'm so glad I did because it was the last time I ever wore a bikini.  Stretch marks galore now and will never go there again.  I'm just not one of those to sport my stretch marks.  I say rock it while you can and feel comfortable!

I'm not sure if you've been the Bahamas before or been in February, but I went last February and we only had 1 day that was warm enough to be at the pool / beach. I'm not trying to be a Debbie Downer but just giving advice based on my experience. I hope that it's warm and sunny for you and that you're able to rock that bikini!

Definitely a skin/modestly thing.  As long as you're covered up I'm all for it.  I don't like when women post bare bump pic online either, or do maternity shoots with the bare bumps - no, just NO.  I block people who post these from my wall now because it's just so inappropriate.  If you want those pics to enjoy between you and DH then fine, but there's no need to put it out there to the world.  Would you take a picture of your bare belly if you weren't pregnant and post it there?  I doubt it.  It's overall a modestly thing and it's just not classy.  All women, pregnant or not, regardless of their body type, should be cognizant of their body and present it appropriately, tastefully and respectfully at all times.

No breaks for fat shaming or bump shaming. That's what you are doing so you are gonna get called on it. You can post whatever you want but, as I have learned numerous times, its not flame free. I think your opinion is small minded, archaic and rude. Its none of your business what anybody else does with their body, but quick cover yourself up before you vomit. Have fun hating yourself for the next 6 months...the "you" is specific. I on the other hand will enjoy being comfortable in my new body.
Actually, you bring up a great point!  I have to say as much as my body is growing now and I've bigger than I've ever, I've actually never felt sexier!  It's strange because I hear so many pregnant women complain that they don't feel good about themselves, but I totally feel the opposite so I'm right there with you!  It's fab!  That said, I don't need to be out on the beach shoving my belly in everyone's faces in a bikini.  It's not appropriate.  If other women want to do it, then good for them, but that doesn't make it appropriate, it's just that they're comfortable doing that with their bodies.  To each their own.

I was just giving my opinion on and OPEN FORUM.
Maybe because people like you comment on how disgusting their pregnant bellies are and that they should keep them covered...
