Maui at 26 weeks!

My husband and I just booked our flights to Maui. I will be 26 weeks when we go. Does anyone have travel and vacation advice? Has anyone else vacationed in Maui while 6-7 months pregnant?

Re: Maui at 26 weeks!

  • I was only 8 weeks pregnant when we were there, so no advice on being farther along other than maybe look up the location of a hospital just in case?  Where will you be staying?

  • I've been to Maui, but not while pregnant. Road to Lahina is a must see. Also, if you can get to the Pineapple Grill, they have THE MOST AMAZING pineapple upside down cake. We went repeatedly just for dessert. I don't even like pineapple. For real. Enjoy your vacation.

  • I think we are staying in kehei. Where is pineapple grill? I love cake! I will absolutely go there :)
  • Depending on the length of the flight, make sure you get up and walk around to prevent swelling too much. Also ask your OB about it to see if they have any tips etc.

  • We stayed in Kihei and loved it, it was a great central location to explore the island.  My one recommendation would be to splurge on a meal at Mama's Fish House.  I had the seared tuna (yes, I got it seared even when I was pregnant, but they literally have the name of the captain and ship that caught their fish that day) and it was probably the best meal I've ever had.  Soooo good.  Also, there's a small fish taco place in Kihei called Coconuts, and it's delicious and a lot of food.

The Road to Hana was overrated in my opinion, we only drove halfway before we were over it.  The roads are narrow (only one lane in a lot of places) and have blind corners which people fly through.  All of the 'stops' for waterfalls are crowded and there's hardly anywhere to park and almost no waterfalls are visible just from the road.  I guess we were a little spoiled having previously been to Kauai where there's at least 5 waterfalls in view at all times.  My ILs drove all the way to Hana though and they enjoyed it, so it's definitely personal preference.

I liked the drive up Haleakala much better.  The road was safer, the changing scenery was more interesting, and the view from the crater was like another world.  We didn't make the drive before sunrise, which is really popular, but it was still worth checking out (and still requires a sweater, it was about 50* at the summit).

I've never been there pregnant, but we went there for the first half of our Honeymoon.  You definitely need to do the Road to Hana - I think it's a little overrated, but it's a must do if you've never been to Maui.  It takes ALL day, so leave at the crack of dawn, no joke, because you don't want to be out there when it starts to get dark again.  Just make sure you stay on the paved roads, and I don't think the off-roading parts while pregnant would be a good choice.

There are also tons of delicious little restaurants in the town of Lahaina - anywhere is a good choice!

I would also suggest the snorkeling trips out of Maui vs. the other islands - if that's allowed when pregnant, I honestly don't know because the boat rides out can get bumpy.  We took a 1/2 day trip to Molokai from Maui and it was a lot of fun but definitely wavy.  I don't remember the name of the company we used, but the captain's name was Yoshi!

To eat, you have to try Mama's Fish House - I would recommend going during daylight hours so you can see the view - it was dark when we were there.  The food was delish, but I will say it's nothing you can't get in NYC - just super fresh seafood.

Finally, you MUST do sunrise at the top of Haleakala.  It's gorgeous, and a must do if you do nothing else.  You probably can't bike down because you're pregnant, but we did that and ate breakfast at a Kula Lodge, which was a little more than halfway down.  My #1 suggestion would be to do this one of the first days you're there.  You have to get up super early - like 3am, so do it before your body adjusts to the time change (assuming you're arriving from somewhere in the continental US :-) ).  That was actually the best advice anyone gave us when we went - we did it our first morning in HI and we were wide awake haha.

I'm attempting to add a photo of the sunrise...which if you do it, you should def go for sunrise, it's unreal.

  • My most important advice would be to not plan too many things. There is so much to see and do on Maui that you could easily schedule yourself every single day you're there. RELAX. Take some time to hang on the beach, sit by the pool, have lazy days where you just play it by ear. That said, don't do the Road to Hana; boring and long. Haleakala was amazing. A luau is fun, but expensive. And if I hear you came home without eating a mean at Aloha Mixed Plate in Lahaina I don't know if we can be friends anymore. If you could ship some of their macaroni salad to me that would be appreciated.

I also agree with making sure you take at least a day or two to relax.  For that week of our HM we did 4 days of activities and 3 days of lounging.  Or maybe it was 5 and 2...either way, we had a couple solid days just by the pool/beach.  Have fun!

  • I'm sooo jelly!! I've done Maui 3 times (a total of 25 days). Last time I was there was for my wedding.

I stayed in Waliea... And we hung out in kihea a lot. My restaurant recommendation is The Plantation House

2000 Plantation Club Dr, Lahaina, HI
Go for dinner and watch the sunset. AMAZING
  • not sure exactly where it is. We stayed at the Ritz and it was like 5 min from there. I googled the address:

200 Kapalua Dr, Kapalua, Maui, HI 96761

  • Honestly, I wouldn't go. That flight was killer when I wasn't pregnant and I can't imagine sitting through it at 26 weeks pregnant, not to mention being that far from home at that stage. If you're set on Hawaii I'd go sooner.

  • I'm sitting in Waikiki right now after having spent the last 10 days at Kapalua in Maui! It was awesome! My favorite meal was at Merriman's in Kapalua though I've heard Lahaina Grill is the best place for a fancy dinner (reservations are a must). I spent most of my time snorkeling, reading magazines at the beach/pool, and eating. We also went to the O'o Farm in Kula and it wasn't worth the trek.

I would nix the drive to Hana (we didn't do it this trip but I've done it before)--while it's beautiful it is SUCH a long drive and absolutely exhausting. You'll spend the whole time trying to trying to find a spot to pee.  We wanted to go whalewatching but the water was too rough and I made the mistake (?) of telling them I was pregnant and they wouldn't let me go. You might be able to take a bigger boat out though.

Have a great time! And let me know if you need any other specific recs.
