BTDT moms--question about weaning to sippy

So, DD is 9 months old, and I was planning on going from formula in a bottle straight to milk in a sippy after a year. She drinks water from a sippy cup or straw cup fine, and I've heard other moms have success doing it like that, so I wasn't worried. But, she had her 9 month appointment today, and her pedi suggested starting to switch to a sippy cup from bottles now so she is weaned from bottles completely by the time she is a year.

Just wondering what you BTDT moms have done when making the switch.

Re: BTDT moms--question about weaning to sippy

  • With DD we switched at 18 months (this was what I was told back in the day ;) ), with DS we did it at 12 months. We didn't really have to wean, one day I just stopped giving them bottles and they really didn't seem to notice or care.

Ok, that's what I thought and had planned to do, but her pedi made it seem like it's a big weaning process. And I'm usually on the same page as him with stuff, but not this.

  • Would love to see some answers. DS is almost 20 months (yikes, I know I know) and I've been trying for like 5 months to kick the bottle. His pediatrician didn't seem to be concerned and specifically said that she didn't see an urge to strip him of it ASAP. But at the same time they've been asking if he's still using a bottle. I feel like a fail! He drinks juice and water just fine out of a soppy but chucks the cup and throws a fit if it has milk in it

  • I think we introduced a sippy around 10 months and it was usually water for him to get the hang of it. Then I started giving him his formula in a sippy maybe 1-2 times a day (usually the mid-day feedings, not the first morning or one right before bed). By the time he was a year, we dropped all bottles and we had been mixing half formula/half milk in a sippy until we had fully introduced milk in the sippy. But I remember one week after his 1st birthday, he was not using bottles anymore. I am pretty sure it was whole milk exclusively at that point as well.

  • We introduced for water around 10 months and changed over to milk at around 12 months. I don't think it's urgent to do it sooner. Both of mine preferred the softer "MAM" brand cups because they were more like bottles.

We mixed breastmilk and milk for a while in a bottle close to a year. Then we did a sippy switch! DD was a very chill kid thoughso I probably wouldn't have phased her no matter what we did.

  • Warning: We are cold turkey-ers over here.

We never gave EBM from anything but the boob or bottle before 1 and did water in the sippy (straw only) stating at 10-11ish months?  We began to introduce WCM at 11 months replacing 1 once in one bottle a day to get her stomach used to it.  After 1 we went 10 1/2 n' 1/2 warmed up in sippys (no more bottles) until the BM ran out (around 13-14 months) and then stopped warming the milk up completely.  She is now 16 months and on cold WCM exclusively.

I think this is one of those depends on the kids things.  For some it can be, for us it was NBD.  You know your kid and what works best for you and LO.  :)

Good point. DD's a super chill kid, so I'm sure it'll be no big deal if we just switch completely when we switch to whole milk at a year. Thanks. :)

  • Asher had a bottle until like 14 months, and then it was mixed for a while...it is terrible but I can't really remember now.  It wasn't like a "great switch" but we were relaxed about a lot of that stuff.

  • DS was breastfed so I may be a little different because he only got a bottle at daycare with my milk in it. But at about 9-10 months I had them switch to a sippy, since he was good at using one with water in it. He didn't care at all, he hasn't had a bottle since 10 months. I think it's easier to switch them earlier while they don't care as much. When they get a little older they know more and might fight it more. But I don't claim to know much about bottle feeding because I never gave him one myself. Just my thoughts.

  • Yeah, it was super easy to switch from a bottle to a sippy. Weaning paci's was so much hard... Potty Training... LOL No.

Can she go to college in diapers?
potty training is the hardest parenting thing ever.  I was so frustrated when I finally decided to just get down and dirty.  I used the "Oh crap potty training" guide and just did nothing for two weeks but potty train him.  It was messy messy messy.

About a week before his 1st birthday I ran out of formula, so I gave him milk in a sippy. No transition period.

  • We just switched. I was in to see the pedi at around 11 months and asked when he needed to be done with bottles and she said now. We had been trying to give water in sippies and he refused. The pedi said if we got to his birthday and he still refused then just go cold turkey and he'd figure it out. Guess that "scared" him enough because when we got home that night he had no issue with a sippy of formula. Some moms have luck with the cold turkey switch to WCM but others have to mix with formula and slowly do more milk and less formula. That is the rout we chose with DS but we went from 50/50 to straight milk. Honestly, I was in a hurry and didn't have time to mess with formula one morning. He is still iffy on if he will take it or not some days but he was getting to be that way anyhow with his formula.

Congrats to my GP Sister from another mister Bruinsbabe!!

  • With DS we had to transition through a couple styles of sippy cups before he figured out how to drink from them. I had to start with the Avent ones because they had a spout that is basically a nipple. Once he figured those out we moved to a more normal style sippy and he did fine after that.

  • We switched just after a year, but it wasn't easy. I think DS being in daycare and seeing the older kids using sippies really helped, because at home he would just throw them on the floor angrily. But we just kept offering it and trying different kinds, and eventually he picked it up. We didn't ditch the nap time and nighttime bottle though until he was about 14 months old (about a month ago)...I was scared of letting those go, but it turned out to be no big deal.

At 9 months old, I personally wouldn't stress about it, but I would offer it and see how it goes.

  • DS was off bottles at 11 months. I don't think it would hurt to put formula in a sippy once in awhile and slowly introduce it that way. I agree that weaning from the bottle was much easier than getting that damn paci away!
  • I really don't know because daycare did most of the heavy lifting! We sent him with a sippy of water starting around 8 months, then when he was transitioned out of the infant room at 10 months he was completely on sippy cups (they don't allow bottles in the toddler room). We're still working on dropping the nighttime bottle though. His bottle really calms him down and signals that we're no longer playing, it's time for sleep. I have no idea what to do...
