I'm in SC, and we have a 2 hour delay tomorrow because it will be below 0 before 9 and only up to 5 degrees by 10. They did the delay basically for the kids who are bus riders. People down here just do not know how to dress in the cold weather and the kids could be standing out there for a long time. I am sure I will have kids show up with a light fleece on instead of a coat. And, the buses run on a different type of engine that could cause them not to start cause of frozen gas? So, if a kid expects a bus out there at a certain time, and isn't adequately dressed, and the bus doesn't come because it's broken down, they are afraid of frostbite. That was the reason for the delays anyway. I'm excited I get to sleep in tomorrow cause I plan to watch the football game tonight!
Wait, it just occurred to me, do cars in the southern/hot states not have ice scrapers in them? (I still don't entirely get how the tarp would help, but that's all I can come up with.)
Now that I'm thinking about it, I'm not even sure where ice scrapers come from, it just seems like there's at least one in every car. I've never actually had to procure one, and yet my particular car has two. If you don't have snow plows it seems reasonable you wouldn't have ice scrapers, but thinking of a car without an ice scraper is a little like trying to fathom a place where faces don't have noses and it's just normal. The diversity of regional weather prep is blowing my mind today.
Ice scrapers come from the store. Walmart, auto parts stores, sometimes promotional items, etc.
Congrats to my GP Sister from another mister Bruinsbabe!!

Why is my school the only one not doing this?! And Go Noles!

Could they be diesel busses? A Diesel engine is hard to start in extreme cold situations. Many diesels up here have a heater on them so they can plug it in to hear up the engine allowing it to start in cold weather.

This made me laugh! When I lived in NY, I always had an ice scraper. Here in SC, the handful of days that I have ice on my windshield, I go turn my car on for 30 minutes and use a spatula....no joke!

Yes...so kind of block that goes in the engine for diesel engines....we don't have that down here!
I'm in DC now, where it will be a whopping 9. Coming from Miami, where the "coldest" it ever got was 50, well, that's freaking cold! Haha. I won't complain, seeing all the other crazy temps here!

@sisterjanet I usually use a credit card or something of the sort--I tried this in Ohio and my inlaws stared at me with jaws dropped.
I'm in Atlanta - we had a school workday today, but we didn't have to go in until 10. Tomorrow was supposed to be the kids' first day back. They canceled for the whole day, but the teachers and staff report at 10 again. You can make fun of us all you want, but I'm just glad to have a late morning and no kids!!
Haha yeah usually people in the south won't get much ice to scrap so you heat up longer or improvise. Coming from the north I always had one in the trunk up until last year when I realize why is this still in my car...

Haha my sister will be happy she works for the school about 20 min north of there. Though I wish and she wished there was some snow to show for the temps. I would totally take the drive up there for my son to see snow for the first time ever.

I'm in FL. Not as cold but it's projected to be in the 30s tomorrow and our (title I) school has an awful lot of kids not equipped for the cold. And we start at 7 am so there is no warming up happening at all! This is a good thing though in May when it's hot as balls by ten am.
I live in Alaska, we regularly hit 40 below in the winters. I do find it somewhat entertaining when people freak out about a few inches of snow and and freezing temps. However, keep in mind that they are not prepared for this kind of weather at all.
We have winter tires and heating pads on all our cars. The city/state is equipped to have snow plowed, ice grated, and gravel on the roads before the average person takes off towards work. We are also used to driving on ice and snow, so we know what to do if the car begins to slide or spin. Those who do not have experience can end up in the ditch and hurt, so often times it is just easier for people to stay home.
What part of AK? I grew up in Anchorage and moved to southern MN after college. -60 with windchill today. My biggest pet peeve is when people say "You're from Alaska, you should be used to this!" But no... I'm afraid you can never get used to below zero temps...
OMG. We're from NH, and were stationed at Bragg for several years. Schools shut down for days over a dusting. The leading story on the nightly news one time was a puddle that was slowly freezing. They kept going back for live coverage, zooming in to show us the ice crystals. Then there was the time there was a threat of a flurry during the evening commute in a major city, and everyone left work early and gridlocked the highway. They all came up with the same idea to deal with being stuck in traffic - call 911. They crashed the 911 system for hours.

*Warning: my lack of girliness is about to show*
The engine block has the crank and cylinders (the crank is what moves the pistons, the pistons compress the fuel so that it combusts) and they typically put a block heater on them in the north which plugs in so that the engine block is warm enough. Diesel requires a high compression to strike as it is not nearly as combustible as gasoline. The fuel doesn't actually freeze but it's just hard to build the kind of heat needed in extreme cold. Gasoline engines typically don't have an issue because they have spark plugs and don't rely on the heat from compressing the fuel. Sorry, DH is a diesel mechanic and I have spent countless hours working in the garage with him. It's to the point that he will sometimes run a problem by me to see what my thoughts are on a diagnosis. He always did that with his mom but I threw him for a loop when I actually started giving suggestions. MIL just sits there and lets him think out loud. It interests me though so I've sucked up information like a sponge and have actually even helped my dad when he was stumped.
Congrats to my GP Sister from another mister Bruinsbabe!!

It's ok. I often get looks from DH and I'll be like "I probably shouldn't know that should I?" He always just laughs at me. He has been after me to just open my own shop but I fear getting burnt out on it. Not to mention trying to overcome the stereotype of women belong in the kitchen in an area with some pretty egotistical men. I had one argue with me until he was proven wrong once and then I was just a "know it all bitch" after that.

@RedInLove when did that happen? I live right by Bragg and I don't remember this! I'm guessing it was probably when I was away at college. A lot of ladies have posted good arguments about my dear old South, but that's just embarrassing.
I was there with DH 2003-2007. The puddle was January 2004, I had been there just a couple weeks. The 911 issue, was a year or two later! It was either Charlotte or Raleigh.

I'm guilty of being a cray southerner over our winter weather. It's about 19 degrees here in Dallas and I won't leave the house without dressing like I'm stepping out in Alaskan weather. When it iced over a few weeks ago, I couldn't figure out how to get all that crap off my car so I just gave up and stayed at home for like 4 days until it thawed.
Our pool just froze over and I'm contemplating charging admission to neighbors looking to get in some ice skating. Legit business idea right there.
