Do you like your job?

Re: Do you like your job?

  • I guess I'd say, I love what I do. I'm a Finance Manager for a department in an organization and as dorky as it sounds, I love managing the numbers & revenue, analyzing the $, strategic planning. I get excited working on certain projects and even the mundane stuff entertains my little OCD side. My job itself is great, but I wouldn't say I love it and love getting out of bed in the morning to come here. I wish there was more opportunity for growth, and sometimes politics within my department can drive me crazy and/or make me anxious. But overall I have great benefits, live 10 minutes away, have parking, have flex-time, have generous leave policies... so I can't complain. Or at least, I can't complain anymore since I turned down a great job back in November to stay here after finding out I was pregnant, lol.

I am an account rep for a newspaper. It's extremely stressful because we are a daily newspaper so we have strict deadlines deadlines, quotas, etc. I like it most days but being pregnant it's gotten tougher.
Lurking from July 2014: I completely understand! I did the same thing for over 10 years, then eventually moved into an advertising manager for 5 papers before resigning my position...talk about STRESS!!

I like my current job. I work in a funeral home helping families plan funerals, file government paperwork etc. While it is a rewarding career, it can be very stressful at times for many reasons. I am looking forward to my year maternity leave!
  • I hate mine. I'm a government employee, I make decent money, but the anxiety it causes between January and April is overwhelming.

  • I'm a sonographer, and love what I do! I also love my coworkers, and the radiologists that I work for. However, I can't stand my supervisors. They are really clueless sometimes, and lately have come up with obnoxious rules. They make our work environment depressing, to the point where I'm thankful I work at the hospital only Thursdays and Fridays (off site the rest of the week). Can't have it all though.

  • @kibean I work in a large urban district. My assigned buildings this year are a K-8 and a STEM high school with three different not really school building sites (so it's definitely different which is nice but can get hectic to juggle). I love it and I love working with all my students-I just dread the timelines and the state auditors :)

  • I'm in the mortgage industry and have a love/hate relationship with it. I love that I can kind of come and go as I please and that I can wear what I want. If I need to work from home it isn't a huge deal and I never get turned down for time off. But I really dislike the "feast or famine" aspect of it. I'm either trying to look busy at my desk for 40 hours a week, or I'm rushing around trying to get everything done in 60 hours a week. There is no in between. I commute over an hour each way and I am totally underpaid. The more I write the less I'm liking my job actually....

  • I'm sitting here thinking about going back to work tomorrow and how 'I just don't wanna.'

I'm thankful for my job, I'm paid well for what I do, it's family friendly work place, I have "normal" hours, and it really isn't a hard job or very stressful. Its just that my heart's not in it as it isn't where I want to be or see myself retiring from. --- I manage training for the military.
When I got this position, I was really going after a public affairs job as I had just earned my degree in graphic design.

I'm back in college working on my Bachelor's in Communications. I have 7 classes to go, but I can only seem to manage 1 class at a time (they are 8 week classes), so I still have a ways to go. I don't even know what I'm going to do with that yet, but I'm hoping I can write, edit, or help others to write because that's what I like to do. I don't need my degree for the job I am in, it won't further this career, so I'm hoping to move on when I can.

What do you do and do you like going to work?

I love what I do. What aspect of communications are you interested in? I majored in Communications with a concentration in Public Relations. After I graduated, I started as a PR assistant at a mid-size PR agency. After working my way up the ranks there, I made the transition into corporate communications about 2 years ago. I'm now the communications manager for a Fortune 500 company. Let me know if you have any questions about communications/PR!
  • I am a PK-5 school librarian.  It is a great match for me.  I enjoy it quite a bit, but don't think of myself as a passionate career woman.  I'm a wanna-be SAHM and hope to be when I have a second baby sometime down the road.

It would be much better if I was not doing a job that was once manned by 3 people and now I am the only one.  Still, there are wonderful aspects about it.

  • I manage a small family owned pet resort. They specialize in dog daycare and boarding.

For the most part I enjoy my job. I'm the senior employee and I split running the place with the owners 50/50. I like that when I'm working I am basically the boss. I work closely with the customers and their pets but I get a lot of down time too. My hours aren't the best. I work almost every weekend. But they will be a blessing after baby comes because I won't need to pay for daycare since daddy will be home when I am working.

  • I used to have a job that I loved. Absolutely LOVED. Then my husband joined the military (because he had this desire to serve). I was commuting (yes Commuting) from Savannah to Washington DC weekly and I didn't love my job anymore. Now, I'm desperately looking for another. I just want to get back to work (and actually have an income again!).

  • Yes, I love it. I'm a Social Media Coordinator. I work two days per week. I have the best of both worlds, I get a much needed break but get to spend most of my time with my almost 3 year old (my MIL watches him when I work).

@supgabs, we are SO thankful for our daycare/boarding facility.  It was a lifesaver when our dog was a wildly energetic pup.  And we never have qualms about boarding them because we love the people that run it.  Also, I LOVE dogs and would really love to do something like this someday.

It can be a really fun and rewarding job! Some days I go home and am annoyed with dogs though lol. It takes a special type of person to handle the job. We have a horrible employee turn out. Most people only work as a handler for 2-3 months before quiting but I've been doing it for 5 years now and can't really see myself anywhere else.

  • I'm a social worker. I left my state job in August to work part time at a school while I finish grad school. I thought I would love the school but I don't. It's political, and most of the kids I work with are lazy and entitled. I actually just decided to go back to my old job even though it means a longer commute and longer hours.
  • I like the company I work for, but I HATE my actual job.  I've been looking to make a move to a different area internally for a while not but no dice.  I'll keep trying for another couple months then I'll have to put that on pause until after I'm back from leave.

I'm an editor / publisher / manager of two subscription websites, part of a larger company that has many of the same :) The company is incredibly family-friendly: 14 weeks paid mat leave (!), unlimited vacation and sick time (!!), work at home whenever you need to, etc. They are even working on getting a day care on site, though with only 300 employees that might be a ways off. I've been frustrated with some aspects of the workplace in the past, like how we basically never promote women no matter how qualified, but you can't argue with benefits like these and the pay is good too. My husband also works here and is due for a raise this month, and I am on pins and needles to see how big it might be -- it would have to be pretty big to let me SAH, but that's not totally impossible and it's not something we've ever been able to consider before financially. I will probably stay either way, though -- I love the work, it's a great mixture of managing people, editing, writing, design for print and web, etc.

I love hearing what all y'all do :)

  • I don't even feel that I should complain because of how "cushy" my current position is. I keep thinking that the hours, low stress, and moderate flexibility will be nice when baby arrives...but like many of you my heart just isn't in it. I sort of get bored with my current responsibilities, which makes me slack off more than I am comfortable with.
If I had it my way, I would love to be a full-time at home mommy...but after finishing up a PhD...a feel odd about not working...especially when it would be extremely challenging on DH's income alone.
I have career aspirations to switch Universities and positions in the future...but for now...staying makes the most sense. Glad I am not the only one in this boat. Thanks for sharing ladies!

  • I'm a Clinical Research Coordinator working in neuroscience, particularly ALS. I love what I do. Not only is it so interesting and varied, but my patients and their caregivers are amazing. The work I do and relationships I make are so personally rewarding. I know I am making a difference in people's lives and working to help advance science and medicine. I feel very fortunate to love what I do and be well compensated for it. Definitely grateful.

  • My job and I have a love-hate relationship. I work as a visual manager setting up window displays at a large department store which truly is my passion, however, some people can really make me hate it. Just one rude customer encounter or an asshole employee run in and my day turns to shit. I need to learn to redirect my stress and late night "I don't want to go to work tomm" freak outs. Any suggestions with learning to just let things go?
  • I love my job. I worked on the business side of the fashion industry for 7 years and then left 2.5 years ago to became a wardrobe stylist. My schedule is mostly flexible, I make great money, and I get to be creative and work with interesting and fun people everyday.
  • I'm in the insurance field and truly enjoy it. Of course I sometimes get stressed and mentally exhausted but I would never leave. I have a good thing going with room to grow.

Sometimes I miss the hospital setting but with my job, I will never have to work Christmas or Thanksgiving and having that family time is everything to me <3

  • @kibean I have four campuses (two title one elementary schools and two middle schools). There are three LSSPs in our district and we all do the counseling, assessments, and consultation for our campuses. I like it, but I wish I only did evaluations. I really want to work for ECI or at a university, but maybe in the future. Are you looking for interns? A friend of mine is doing her internship next year and wants to do it in Baltimore or in the area.

  • I was an elementary teacher before having DS, but I left the education field disillusioned :( It wasn't at all what I thought it would be; adored teaching and the kids, hated the administration, parents with no responsibility, state testing, budget cuts, school board politics, etc. I honestly don't think I'll ever teach again, which is a bummer because I have a master's in literacy instruction and curriculum building.

I've always been crafty, so when I decided to be a SAHM to my son I opened an Etsy and Ebay store to sell some of my work. I now stay home with my son every day and make about 75% of what I would as a teacher, minus the daycare expenses I would be paying if I was teaching. I am living my dream job - it's a lot of work to be self-employed, but I love being with my son every day while still getting to be creative and have fun for "work" once my DH gets home. I also love that I can take a day off if he is sick and get all of our household "stuff" down without my DH having to take any time off work.

My dream job (for a few years now) has been to go into sonography once all of my kiddos are in school. Depending on how my online sales go, I may or may not pursue that in the future :)

  • I'm a government civilian working in contracting.  I don't like my job.  I'm just burnt out I think.  The politics, the furloughs, pay freezes. Morale in general just really sucks.

In the end though, none of that really mattered because I have always planned on staying home when we had kids.  It just happened to where my job has kind of been in a nosedive in the last couple of years.

I feel ya, there. I got the furloughs & pay freezes, too, last year. Pretty demoralizing. There's no budget to do the job in its current state never mind the extra stuff they keep piling on. I'm glad that I work with some pretty great people in my immediate work center. This was not the story a few years ago when I first started... We're still "training the boss," though lol. Hopefully we can get him there before he retires in a couple of years. :)

**edited--I don't know what happened to the quotes. Everything looks cool in my edit box.*** I just finished up my public relations class this fall and did really well in it... Well... I've done really well in all of my core communications classes. I
feel like I'm in the right degree program, at least, since I'm getting near perfect grades on everything in my core studies. and enjoy the material. (knock on wood!)
PR seemed very interesting and certainly at the core of what a communications major does
Do you have to start as an intern to get into the field? I feel like that is where I missed the opportunity with graphic design as I couldn't take on an internship at the end of my program--I had to work. I am pretty much in the same boat here. There's no part-time option at my current job, and my boyfriend's shift-work schedule doesn't really provide me the flexibility to do what I need to do to get where I need to go if I needed to take on additional hours beyond that for an internship. Someone has to take care of the kids, and I'm the one with regular hours.

I wonder what percentage of the workforce got hired into careers related to their degree because they interned as well as the opposite--How many didn't need to intern to land a career in their preferred field?
