S/O cold weather car rides - coats for carseats

I'm tired of getting the side eye from other moms who dress their kids in snow suits to go to Walmart while I have dd in fleece and layers. Can anyone recommend a coat that looks warmer than fleece hoodies, but is still thin enough for the carseat. (Right now she has a 3 in 1 that is too puffy, and a wool coat that is too bulky.)

Also, anyone have luck with a poncho for more than just going from home to a warm car - like running errands and going in and out a lot?

This is for central NY weather.

    We don't get super cold down in south Texas (it will be our first hard freeze tonight at 21 degrees).  But when lived in Denver a couple years back, I always put DD in fleece over long sleeves over thermal onesies. I'd put her warm coats on backwards after strapping her in her car seat, and then I'd put it on the right way after arriving to our destination before pulling her out of the car.  I tried the poncho but it always ended up thrown around the car hah.

    I only put a fleece or sweatshirt with a blanket for riding in the car, but before getting her out to go into a store I put her jacket on. It's a pain to put her jacket on and off while running errands but I don't know any other way.

    Yeah I guess I will just have to put her coat on before I get her out of the car - maybe hop in the opposite side of the backseat while I do cause it's effing cold!

    This is exactly what we do. Works well.
