Positive Test...

Hi Everyone, I'm a total newbie here. I just got married last week. Been together over 8 years. Before the wedding we had talked about starting to try for baby within the next year. I've been taking CVS gummy prenatal vitamins, just to get used to it before we start trying. While running errands before a snowstorm, something told me to grab a test. I am a week late, but have also been sick with a really bad cold/bronchitis for the past week. It's not unusual for me to be late because of the sickness. Anyway, I got a positive test result. I don't have insurance yet (waiting for my marriage certificate, name change, etc). So I haven't been able to call and get a doctors appointment.  The test I used was the Clear Blue with weeks estimator. It says I'm 2-3 weeks. Are these things accurate? The instruction pamphlet says the indicator will read 2-3 weeks but a doctor would estimate me at 4-5 weeks. What gives?   I've had barely any appetite, but starving hungry most of the day. Any advice? Aside from getting to a doctor? I've already started to look on my husband's network for doctors to call. I should be all set with insurance this week. When will a doctor want to see me? Thanks for the help in advance.

Re: Positive Test...

  • Congratulations on your positive result. I don't know much about the Clear Blue week estimator tests so I can't help you there. When a doctor sees you depends on that particular doctor, and if you have any risk factors. It could be anywhere from 7 to 12 weeks, or more, or less. My best advice would be to not say things like "save the criticism, I'm here for real information". A lot of people around here don't take kindly to being told how, what, and where to post on a public forum (read some of the longer threads from the past few days). You'll get real information, but there's no guarantee you won't get a nice helping of snark along with it. This really is a great community, but it's not for everyone.

  • Thanks! I'll be on my husband's insurance once we get all the paper work handled. That should be this coming week. I didn't know if I should expect to have to go in ASAP because I haven't ever been. Thanks for the advice.

  • Thanks vikingmom, I'm used to being on forums about cars and stuff, not babies. People can be so snarky and rude. I appreciate your advice too.  I've read most docs don't want to see you until at least 8 weeks. Was just hoping maybe someone out there has had a similar experience. I've been poking around the forums since I got that positive test.

  • The digis with weeks estimator predict the time since ovulation so if it reads 2-3 weeks then you are the standard way of saying 4-5 weeks pregnant. It means the same thing.

Hunger is pretty common early on. I thought I would eat everything in my entire house those first few weeks. Plus, for me, eating every couple hours (small meals or snacks) eased my sickness.

Youre doing to right thing by choosing an in network doctor. Each office is different but they will guide you on when to come in for an appointment. Some will see patients as early as 6 weeks. Others may make you wait for several more weeks. Some will do an initial consult, pee in a cup, take some blood, etc and then start you on the monthly appt schedule. Don't expect to have an ultrasound early on. It is completely normal to not have an ultrasound since you have no previous problems with pregnancies and fertility.

Just give the doctor a call and go from there. Congrats.

Probably not, but it's possible since you have yet to be to the gyno. Doctors usually classify women as low-risk unless/until they have reason to believe that they're not (things like health concerns, prior miscarriages, etc). High risk pregnancies often get seen immediately, but most low risk pregnancies will be seen between 8-12 weeks for an intake appointment with a nurse consisting of blood work, medical history, urine pregnancy test for confirmation, and a pap smear. Sometimes there might be an u/s if there's a question about your due date too.

You could pick a doctor in your insurance network and see if they'll book the appointment for later. Many OBs book out a month or more in advance. Eat, take your prenatals, and use discretion (and common sense) when someone tells you ___ is unsafe while pregnant. :) Congrats!

  • thank you kjkarats. i'm super anxious as i'm sure most women are when they get the good news! i'm very careful about what goes in and on my body. my younger brother and his girlfriend are expecting in march so i've been doing a lot of research with her fortunately. my general rule is if i think it may not be safe, do not bother with it! :)

  • I didn't have maternity coverage until the first of the year and I got a positive test on 12/26. I called to make an appointment and just told them that I wouldn't have coverage for a few days. They didn't end up scheduling me until mid-January, and just told me to call back with my updated insurance information. Good luck and congratulations!

  • I got married in March and switched my insurance over to my husbands at the end of April.  They considered me insured under his from our wedding date.  It doesn't take that long...about a week.

  • You are most likely 4-5 weeks. Mine was that and I was actually 6 weeks (the next day)

    Congrats and get insurance asap.

  • You can probably schedule an appt even though you don't officially have insurance. Most places will schedule you as long as you have insurance come time for your appt.

If you're feeling like you have m/s then I'd try to eat whatever sounds appealing. If eating regular meals is too nauseating, then try smaller meals and eat more frequently during the day. And of course continue taking your prenatals. Make sure they have folic acid and dha if you can... and iron although the iron may contribute to your m/s.
  • Wow, I'm in almost the exact same situation. If you are worried and want to set your mind at ease, go to the ER as soon as you have insurance (that's what I did because I was getting PMS from hell with no period.) Depending on the hospital, they should be able to do an ultrasound for you and run some other tests to set your mind at ease. For me, they even referred me to an OB-GYN who could make an exception and see me in two days instead of making me wait. If your current plan for getting on insurance isn't going quickly enough you can always see what your options are on healthcare.gov. Best of luck, and don't worry, I know exactly how you feel!

OP is not having any complications or an emergency that would make going to the ER justifiable. ERs are not for setting your mind at ease with a pregnancy. Bad, bad advice.

^This exactly! My DH works at our local ER and they get clogged up with people wanting to 'set their mind at ease' instead of waiting for an appointment. His ER does have an ultrasound, but it is for EMERGENCIES. I concur that just going to the ER to set you mind at ease is bad advice, glad you're not taking it OP.

To answer your question isn't there a window that you can be added to you H's insurance? I think 30 days in CA at least for new spouses and children, not sure though. With my son I was able to see the pedi with him before he was officially on my insurance within this window, I would just incur the actual medical costs if the paperwork didn't go through.
  • I'm just trying to see if my ticker works. Ignore this y'all. Sorry.

Hope you can get it sorted out. :)

  • Just wanted to chime in on this thread (belatedly) to amplify trombgirl's extremely important observation: DO NOT WAIT FOR NAME CHANGE OR OTHER PAPERWORK TO GET ADDED ON INSURANCE-- you typically have 30 days after marriage/birth of child (and certain other qualifying events) to get added to your plan and if you miss that window your employer/insurance provider has the absolute right to deny your ability to add until the next standard enrollment window (which could be as many as 12 months away).  The spouse with insurance should contact HR and get paperwork moving as soon as you return from the wedding/honeymoon.  Changing a name on insurance is a small problem compared to being uninsured throughout your pregnancy (and delivery!).  Good luck!

p.s., I also wouldn't mention waiting for insurance when scheduling an appointment a week or two out, just say you don't have the insurance handy and will call them back after tracking it down.

  • We got all the insurance taken care of, and I have an appointment scheduled for Friday. Unfortunately, we just found out my coverage won't start until February 1st. I'm so upset, and I have no idea what to do. We can't afford the visit out of pocket. I was told by many people that I'd be covered even retro-actively from the date of our marriage. I guess that's not true. Empire Blue Cross is terrible.

  • You should be ok. You're early enough that most women aren't even seen yet anyway. I would call and make an appointment for after the 1st.

This. You will be ok waiting 2 more weeks.

  • Yeah, I already made that decision yesterday. I figured it was kind of serendipitous that this happened. I was looking for an excuse to cancel since I had a really bad feeling about the office I made the appointment at.
