"You look tired"

How do you respond to this, especially when it's a coworker? I feel like I get this all the time, and you know what, I am tired, but I feel like it's a little rude for people to point out that I look like a shit. They invariably start blaming my toddler, which isn't really fair since she STTN. But dude. It's 8 am on a Monday and you just interrupted my first cup of coffee. Of course I look a mess.

  • I usually assume they say it cus they care and I respond with whatever is the truth at the moment :)
  • Loading the player...
  • It depends on who says it.  Here are some of my go-tos:

"Thanks a lot, happy Monday to you, too!" (this one is especially good if it is not Monday)
"Oh, no, I guess I didn't do a good job with my concealer this morning."
"I guess it's good that the paparazzi aren't following me"
say nothing, just stare at them for a moment before walking away...  (wish I had the balls to do this with some of my coworkers)

or if they know you're pregnant, there's always:
    "No shit, Sherlock."

Also, I hope you finish that cup of coffee!  Yawn!

  • I have a tendency to just stare when someone says this or "are you feeling ok? You don't look so good." My personal favorite response to those comments though is to say OK. You acknowledge that you heard them but that you deem it not worthy of response. They get the idea pretty quickZ

I used to get that a lot.  Mostly, I assumed it was because I was in fact tired.  Probably from partying too much.  I just think it's an awkward thing to say, and there is really no response.  It's just stupid small talk.  Like, they want you to agree with them so they can tell you how tired they are.

IDGAF if you're tired lady, get off my butt!  Let me work!

  • I usually just say "oh thanks" with a half chuckle and move on. I agree it's rude...but usually in the back of my head I know it's true so whatever. Doesn't really bother me.

  • If it's work people, usually I just blame it that I got my coffee late/saw them earlier.  If you drink coffee, it's a good excuse.

If it's a friend, I usually tell them to stfu and I wouldn't be so tired if I didn't have to stay up all night thinking of ways to make DH's life miserable.
  • I had a male co worker say to me a week or so ago "wow, you look like hell!" I replied with "gee thanks, that's the sweetest thing anyone has said to me all day."

  • Add me to the sarcastic 'thanks' list. I hate it when people say that to me and its alllll the time. I also get 'omg are you ok?' Quite frequently.
  • I guess this comment doesn't bother me that much... mainly because I know it's true haha.

Buuut my mom always tells me I look exhausted if she stops over and I don't have makeup on, etc.  That irks me.

  • My MIL was visiting for a few days and she pointed it out every. single. day. Kind of annoyed me but yeah I am tired, so what? I am growing a baby and running after a 17 month old. Wouldn't you be tired?

  • Telling a woman, pregnant or not, that they look tired is a cowardly way to tell them they look like shit.

Of course I look tired when I don't have mascara on. Makeup is magic.  People are stupid.

  • You look tired comments don't bother me because I'm always tired. What I hate are the "you look bad" comments. I think those are mean. I still try to look presentable so it hurts my feelings and makes me feel super ugly.

  • I always go the "I grew part of a lung today, so that can wear a person out." route. Or something along those lines, not that sentence specifically. I HATE the tired comments, too! (Except from my sympathetic friends, because I know they mean well :) )

  • Yea, most of the time I'll either respond with, "I AM tired." (coworkers, family and friends) but if it's a customer I find it very rude because, yanno I didn't comment on your physical look.  D:  I respond with a sarcastic "thanks" and just hurry them along at the register.  : /

But yes, I agree with PP, mascara (and a little bit of concealer) makes me not look AS tired.

  • "So do you." I'm extra today though.

  • I think it's settled. Next time I'm just going to say, "huh" and glare at him until he gets the point. I swear this coworker says the same thing every time I talk to him. So freaking irritating.

  • I think it is such a rude comment, and make it a point to never say it to anyone (even if someone looks like s**t, why make them feel worse?).

Whenever I've gotten that in the past, I've responded with,
"That's so funny, I was just going to say the same thing to you". Big Smile :)
  • No one knows I'm pregnant yet so my go to answer is that I must have forgotten to put on blush or concealer. I doubt people are buying it at this point,
