Humidifier for nursery?

Do most people get a humidifier for the nursery right away? I read you should have one where the baby is sleeping if the air is too dry--but how do you know if your air is dry? Also I heard it helps when they're sick?

Re: Humidifier for nursery?

  • Our pediatrician told us to always run it in the winter and when their sick. So that's what we do. Now that DS is 2.5 I don't run it every night but I will for LO.

Make sure you research them well and follow the directions to a T. Our pedi recommends the cool humidifiers (not the warm ones) due to mold/bacteria growth in the warm humidifiers. They also need to be thoroughly cleaned regularly to avoid this. We went through 4 or 5 humidifiers the first couple years. I know the Vicks brand is a PITA to clean.

We also used distilled water to avoid calcium build up etc.

  • We only use a cool mist humidifier when the kids are sick.

  • Oh and there are these little things that you can drop in the tank to help prevent mold growth. Get them! Otherwise you have to replace the filters way more often. Lesson learned the hard way...

  • Also recommend the crane cool mist! They come in cute animal designs, too. Ha! We got one from our shower and have been using it in our room ever since. I sleep a lot better and with the dry heat, I'm not all congested. You've got to make sure you're cleaning it out really good though. With the crane cool mist, there are no filters to collect bacteria, which I like.
  • Just got back to my PC... this is the one we have:

and this is the cleaning cartridge I was talking about...

We went through at least 2-3 other humidifiers and all of them were ruined by mold b/c I forgot to clean them.  This one has lasted us at least 3 years (with almost nightly use in our room during this pregnancy!) and those cartridges have made all the difference in keeping it clean!

We use one year-round, for both night sleep and naps, for white noise and humidity.  Who knows if it has anything to do with it, but DD rarely gets sick.
BFP #1 9/2010 (lost our baby at 21 weeks) BFP #2 8/2011 (ectopic pregnancy) BFP #3 10/2011 (chemical pregnancy) BFP #4 12/2011 (Abigail born 8/15/12) BFP #5 5/2013 (Griffin born 1/23/14 with heart defects, now repaired!)

  • We registered for one and if we don't get it I'll be buying one. I have horrible allergies as does my dad. I'm assuming LO will have them too.

Running Hydrogen peroxide and water through it is a great way to clean and disinfect them.
  • We had a crappy filter one that I was THRILLED to throw away. Thing leaked, filter was gross... We replaced it with a Pure Guardian that we found online (you can search them at BRU) & then bought it for more then half the price at Costco. Description says: Unlike other humidifiers that grow slimy mold and mildew, the pureguardianTM 120-Hour Ultrasonic Digital Humidifier uses Silver CleanTM Technology to fight the growth of mold and mildew on the surface of the water tank.
It is super quiet, has a nightlight- it typically resides in DS room, but if MH or I get sick, we use it & it really does help with breathing at night. Plus I notice I don't get a bloody nose when I run it in our room.
