What are your favorite "Chinese"/Asian foods?

Where I live, our "Chinese" places are mostly Vietnamese-inspired foods, but still call themselves "Chinese" foods (which, as my former Vietnamese neighbor/restaurant owner once told me, it was just easier to say it was Chinese food.  He's adorable.).

I love the Szechuan Eggplant, General Tso's Chicken, Orange Chicken and of course crab rangoon.

From our Vietnamese joint, I order beef Pho and fresh spring rolls (the kind with shrimp and fresh mint leaves... noms).

What about you guys?  I feel like I never really get out of my comfort zone and could use some new foods to fall in love with.

  • I loooooe schezhuan beef! Before I had an adversion to beef that is. Schezhuan eggplant sounds soooo good right now. I'm going to go google and see if any Austin restaurants have such a thing.

Sorry no out of the box dishes I love here. Potato pancakes with the special soy sauce they make if you can find them, spicy green beans, lemon chicken. Now I'm hungry for Chinese food!

I will have to check around for the pancakes!  I think I've done the lemon chicken before from one place and didn't mind it.  May have to test that one again.  Thanks!

  • One of my friends calls me 74% asian since I'm the only pasty girl who cooks more chinese food than a lot of asians do.  I could be a higher percentage if I actually spoke mandarin (more than just numbers).

I *love* steamed buns - and make them either plain, or with red bean paste (sweet) filling.  They traditionally have pork filling, but I don't really like pork and stuff.  They do sell them frozen too.
When I was preg before I went on a steamed dumpling binge (I lived across the street from a huge asian market so would pick up like, a 50lb bag every week).
I'm currently hunting a recipe to make vegetarian sticky rice shumai (we had some from a restaurant in NYC's chinatown a couple weeks ago and now I'm hooked).  Of course, if you eat meat, regular shumai is also fantastic.

For chinese takeout though, I get either the cold (peanut butter) noodles or general tso.  If it's Thai, I go for coconut shrimp or chicken.  :)
  • Moo shu is my favorite, really spicy with lots of hoisin. YUM

I'm not really into Chinese, but I love some Thai food.  I'm a sucker for the old Americanized standby though, Pad Thai.  It's delicious, what can I say?

I also love Japanese food.  Lately I've been craving udon soup and takoyaki.  Delicious....
  • Oooohhh...

Crab rangoon, egg rolls that aren't too greasy or mushy (my last was mushy :( ), stuffed mushrooms, and General Tso's chicken.

  • Thai:  red curry chicken
    Japanese:  chicken katsu

    YUMS!!

  • I could probably eat a million crab rangoons right now.
The takeout place I typically go to has a dish called "Dragon and Phoenix" that's comprised of Szechuan shrimp, General Tso's chicken, and various chinese veggies. SOOOO yummy.
    Maybe that'll be dinner.

Joy Yee is awesome!  Did you hear about the fire at the one in Evanston :-/

I've been on a Hawaiian fried rice and beef egg foo young kick lately, but our usual order is beef with peapods, sesame chicken and Cantonese style chicken subgum chow mein with egg rolls or crab rangoon.

  • Mmmm I love Chinese food! Szechaun chicken, chicken with garlic sauce, chicken and broccoli, and lo mein are my favorites.

There was a chinese place I went to in college that had a dish called crispy chicken and it was awesome! Similar to orange chicken with a kick. I've never found another place that makes it though. :(

  • I'm so hungry now. I usually get General Tso's chicken, sesame chicken, lo mein, fried rice, crab rangoon, and wonton soup at Chinese places. Egg rolls are always good too. I really miss my old apartment because there was a close Thai restaurant. My favs were drunken noodles and something called spaghetti kai mao (sp?). At a Japanese hibachi restaurant I usually get chicken, shrimp, or scallops with noodles.

I have the opposite problem with wonton soup! All I want is the beef broth and can only find chicken. I know what I'm doing for lunch tomorrow!
