What could be causing this pressure I'm having?

It's hard to explain. It's around my ribs and lungs but upper part of my abdomen. Like way upper. At first I got a really tight and just uncomfortable feeling that I had to sit down and stretch out my body. Then a while after I ate I started feeling pressure and it was kind of difficult to breathe. I kept laying straight out to stretch, but it hurt just to sit down sitting up. The best way to describe it is pressure I guess. When I laid down on my left side for bed my ribs started to hurt badly. Could it either be gas or heart burn of some kind? I've always had heart burn even before pregnancy and I'm very familiar with what it feels like. This is something different but it could be a different form of it. Can anyone relate to this feeling or have answers?

  • It also feels kind of like a sting. The feeling I got before I ate was like a tight, stingy type feeling. All in all it is uncomfortable and I've been getting it on and off but it seems to be getting worse. It has gone away but it comes and goes like that

  • That doesn't sound like heartburn or gas to me, did it resolve?

  • Hmm, I agree doesn't sound like heartburn. Not sure what it would be though.

  • Too lazy to edit.
Do you have asthma at all when not pregnant?

  • Well you could always try to rule heartburn out. I've had it so terrible it felt difficult to breathe. If you get it again after eating maybe try tums, sitting up straight, etc. Is it also possible that you irritated muscles in your torso? Like if you've recently been sick and coughing a lot, or if you worked out recently? I'd call your general practitioner if you have persistent chest pain. Hope it resolves soon!

  • I was having what sounds like very similar pain and it turned out to be heartburn. It was an intense pressure right under my ribs and not like any heartburn I've felt before but I decided to take a couple of tums and it really helped. Hope that works for you too.
  • I would call your doc. Even though it is probably nothing serious, I had high pressure like that by my ribs and it may have been related to preeclampsia with my last pregnancy. Could also be your gall bladder, which can be common in pregnancy.

Yes it continues to come and go. I haven't had it since last night. It seems to happen if I try sitting like straight up. Almost as if my weight is causing it.

  • Thanks for the advice. I will call my doctor tomorrow and I will also let you know if it happens again and see if I can get a better description. It's more uncomfortable than anything

Hmm, I'd side with another poster and say that I'd shoot a call in to ask your doctor if it sounds normal or something to be checked on.
