Breastfeeding Classes

The hospital I will be delivering at offers a free 3 hour breastfeeding class for expectant Mom's who are registered to deliver there. I'm just wondering if it's really worth the time? They also have a lactation consultant meet with you in the hospital to help you out right after delivery so I'm not sure if both is needed. What are your thoughts?

Re: Breastfeeding Classes

  • The lactation consultant is really cool!

The thing is, the class probably isn't necessary, but it might be. I didn't take a class, didn't end up needing one, and everything went smoothly for us. But other women I've talked to have a totally terrible time to begin with due to actual issues OR things that are really easy to prevent had they known what to do!
I love BFing and find it really interesting, so if I was in your position as a FTM, I'd take the class. It will help you get comfortable with the idea of the different ways to BF as well as give you some strategies if you encounter problems, etc. I think it could be really valuable.

It's one of those things that you take just in case but actually hope will end up being a waste of time, haha.

  • As a FTM, I figure that 3 hours is the least I can do to at least get SOME clue of what I'm supposed to be doing (or at least thinking about).  And if it sucks and I don't learn anything, then 3 hours isn't too much to waste (at least to me).

    This.
  • I'm a FTM and I'm taking one that H will attend with me. I have NO clue why I'm doing and while I'm sure I could probably figure it out, I'd rather be a step ahead of the game

  • Babies r us also offers free classes, one of which is on BF... I was planning on going to one at the hospital and having to pay $75 for it but I think I will try the free one first bc it might be all I need!
  • I think it is. Knowledge is power! The more you educate yourself beforehand the better chance you have of succeeding. I always encourage anyone to take a class to be educated, as well as, gain more confidence.

  • I found it worth my time. So did DH, even though he's a pedi. It's different when it's your own child.
