How many of you use your PNP?

After the seeing the other post about co-sleeper VS. PNP and what not I started thinking about my registry and trying to iron out what I actually NEED.

I registered for a PNP and a co-sleeper but a lot of you STM posted about the rock n' play at BRU, which I actually like better than the co-sleeper (and its a way better price too). I like the idea that it is very portable so I can bring it from our bedroom to the living room during the day if I am in there. It's also smaller than the co-sleeper and I think it will fit better next to the bed. The co-sleeper also worries me because we have two small dogs and I can just see them trying to go in it since it will be right up against the bed. The rock n' play is a more enclosed, so that wouldn't be an issue.

So now I have a rock n' play and a PNP on my reg. But that kind of just seems silly and that I don't need both. I know LO will out grow the rock n' play (we also have a crib that we bought from Ikea, so sleeping arrangements is not an issue). How many of you actually use the bottom half of your PNP for when your LO gets older? The only time I can think of when I might need it is if I run to the bathroom, or need to put LO down for a second while I do something. But that just seems like a waste of money for those few times when I feel like I "might" need it.

What do you think mommies?
Stick with the crib that DH and I already have and reg. for the rock n' play OR
Stick with the crib, rock n' play and reg for the PNP also...

:) thanks ladies!

  • I'm doing RNP and PNP, but the lower model PNP - I don't need the bassinet and changing table attachments especially because my baby's room is on the first floor of our house. Together they're around $110 - sweeeeet!

  • I used mine a lot. We would go out of town and see family and he would sleep in the pnp till about 18months. I really didnt use it too much at home tho.

  • We use it a lot. Once DS was over 4 months he was too big for the RNP. He slept in the PNP from then on and we plan to continue to use it for him through next summer.

  • Good question - I'll be watching this.

I keep seeing articles that the Rock N Play isn't a good place for infants to sleep throughout the night - the articles keep linking it to SIDS.  I know infants that do sleep in it throughout the night and are fine.

  • We skipped the PNP and bought a really light portable crib (by Guava family, highly recommend) for use when we travel. So glad we did. We used the RNP around the house and moved it from room to room as needed.

Sorry can't get out of the stupid gray box? Really? This is the rock n' play I was thinking of getting...https://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=21908496&fromRegistryNumber=51619053&product_skn=582438

Which seems kind of like the co-sleeper with the exception that all the sides are up, but the co-sleeper you have the same option. Hmmm.... now I'm torn.

Good point. I might do that... we have a ranch so I'm not worried about changing either. LOVE 1 floor living let me freaking tell you! Is it one from BRU?  Just wondering what one you have :)

We never used the bassinet portion of the pnp. We mostly use it when visiting family. He still uses it at 23 months. I had it set up in the living room for a couple months when he started crawling and I used it so i could pee in peace. (Which is no longer a possibility... he runs after me and says "me too mama").

Me again... I just googled it. The ones that they recommend for babies NOT to sleep in are the inclined ones. Looks like the bassinet models like this one https://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=21908496&fromRegistryNumber=51619053&product_skn=582438

are fine. Thanks for bringing this up! I almost thought about getting the inclined one.

  • I have a basic model PNP (came with a changing station but no newborn napper or whatever it's called).  We use it when we travel or if I need to contain her at home.  At home she only ever slept in her crib or the RnP (and we only used the RnP for naps during the first few weeks).

  • My kid slept in the inclined RNP specifically BECAUSE of the incline. He had gas and reflux and sleeping somewhat elevated was he only way he would sleep. I don't actually get the purpose of the "bassinet" RNP.

Don't have it yet (FTM) but it's on my registry at BRU. It's green and either 69 or 79. I'm on mobile or id link it for you!

  • We used our PNP quite a bit. I, unlike a couple PPs, used the bassinet/changing table portion a lot especially for diaper changes when DS was really tiny (he was a preemie). Our changing table was in his room upstairs. It has side compartments that were awesome for keeping extra diapers, wipes, cream, pacis, etc. it worked out very nicely. DS is now 18 months and our PNP has still been a life saver with this move. His crib isn't set up at the new house yet, so whenever we randomly stay the night out there we open it up and it works great!

I do know DD hated the thing, though. We didn't use it half as much with her so she was used to her swing and honestly... Her car seat more (DD would ONLY sleep in her carseat for months...) DS used the PNP quite a bit from the beginning, so he got very used to it and will still sleep a solid 10 hours in it now through the night.

  • Thanks for your replies ladies...

So far I am thinking that I will stick with the RNP (bassinet version... if LO has acid reflux we will go from there...) and I think I will reg. for a cheaper PNP without all the bells and whistles since I don't really need them :)

  • My two cents: Before my DS was born (2011) there were a LOT of articles/stories about babies getting flat heads and needing helmets to correct them as a result of prolonged use of the RNP.  Many blogs talk about how they are not actually meant for lengthy sleeping, making the name misleading (fine for napping, not for overnight).  In fact, I personally know two people that this happened to.  This scared me enough to not want to use it.

That being said, I just read that the problem was with a flat head panel inside the fabric and has since been corrected in newer models, so maybe if you're getting one new and not used it's a non-issue for you.  I did just see that the CSPC also did a recall on the RNP last January for a mold issue but, again, said that it was the older models and did not effect models that were in retail at that time.

We used our PNP a lot, even up to this summer on vacation.  I vote PNP.

  • My first slept in the bassinet area of the PNP for the first 4 months since we were moving and we never bothered to set up his crib (or nursery really). It was nice because it had a changing table attached to it too. But, once he got older, he hated it. We used it here and there when we traveled and needed it for a place for him to sleep, but I don't see us using one for #2.

  • My DD slept amazing in her inclined rock n play for 6 months. Her head is perfectly round. I held her a lot during the day and also let her nap in her swing or crib to avoid any flat head issues.

We also have a pack n play that we have used for travel. I had it set up in the living room for awhile. There was a very short time (around 5-6 months when she was starting to crawl) where I would plop her in it with some toys while I used the bathroom or made dinner. Then it became an oversized toy box and I took it down.

She does not like sleeping in her pack n play at all. We actually bought a play yard matress for it that we take with us if we are driving. It helps a little.

If I were doing it all over I would either buy the most basic model of pack n play or just go with out.

The rock n play (the inclined version - I think the other is a glorified bassinet) is worth every penny. (I was going to day worth it's weight in gold but it's super light so that didn't really work...)

  • The rocknplay is only good for a few months. Once they start rolling and squirming they can't really sleep in it anymore. We transitioned to the packnplay around 4 or 5 months before switching to the crib. I wanted LO in our room until she was STTN better, then we transitioned to crib in her room. I will be following the same plan for this LO too. The only thing I've bought so far was a new RNP since we sold our old one!

I also take the "flat head" thing with a grain of salt. Flat heads can happen no matter where your baby sleeps. There's no evidence that the RNP causes this more than any other bassinet, PNP, crib etc. Physiologically, there's no reason why it would. Leaving baby for too long on any sleeping or playing surface will cause flat spots and some babies are more prone to it than others.

We had our regular crib in DD's room for night time, and then a PNP for travel and for when she was little and we would use it in the living room for her to nap in when she still napped a lot.  We did not have a rock n' play though, just a bouncer as the other place for her to sleep.

The PNP is great for us because we've been able to use it for DD to sleep in whenever we travel overnight, which is often for us since family is 6-8 hours away.

We have an RNP ( best thing ever) and a PNP. They serve completely different purposes. The PNP offers more long term use especially for travel. On the flat head note, a baby is just as likely to get it if they sleep in a PNP or crib from day one. A little tummy time and they'll be fine. *iPad thought break* We also have a Phil and Teds Traveller we picked up for heap before we went on long trip this past December. It is awesome. Really compact.

  • I use my son's PNP every day. It holds the basket of all the stupid mega blocks that I can't stand to pick up ONE. MORE. TIME.
  • We went out after our first night home and bought a rock and play--best thing ever! We only used it for a few weeks, since DD likes her sleeping space, but it was a savior during those first few weeks, and we used it ocassailanlly as a chair for her in the living room until she could pull herself up on the sides of it.

We used the pack and play with the infant attachment thing that raises it until we moved her to her crib at 5 months. And then I would put her in it occasionally when I would shower...until she decided to start climbing it and that it was a horrid baby jail that made her scream.

I'm glad we had both the first few moths. Necessary? No. Nice to have? Yes.

  • We use the PNP when we travel.  Our initial thought was she would sleep in that in our room for the first while, but she was such a noisy sleeper she ended up in her crib in her own room by night 3.

We definitely didn't need the extras - change table, bassinet type dealie, etc.  But it is handy to have.  She slept in it this Christmas both at the IL's and in a hotel and she is over 2.

  • I plan on both. Crib will be upstairs, and the others will be downstairs. Also, DH works on the road and we will go back and forth to see him so the RNP/PNP will come with us.

I ended up reg. for this PNP https://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=15262796&fromRegistryNumber=51619053&product_skn=886781

Since I don't need the top part with the changing station and what not

    and this RNP https://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=15262796&fromRegistryNumber=51619053&product_skn=886781

which is the flat one. I like that is portable and can be rocked.

Thanks for the in put! Glad I asked and went with the PNP  as well :)

I don't have a PnP. DD slept in a cosleeper for 8 months then in the crib. We stayed in 5 different hotels with DD and they have always provided a crib/PnP for her to sleep in. I think how much use you get out of it depends a lot on the layout of your house. We live in a small 700sqft open concept condo. We baby proofed everything and just let DD roam free. She's fine here on her own when I'm cooking or go to the bathroom. Mainly, she can't go anywhere where I can't see her. At MIL's house, however, we have a playpen, that I use a lot. since it's not an open concept house I can't see DD if I let her lose when I'm busy doing something else, so I don't. I stick her in the playpen when I'm cooking and when I can't be following her around constantly.

DS slept in a PnP (2011 model, with bassinet and changer but no napper) for six months, and we used a RnP downstairs during the day, also for six months. Then we moved and he got his own bedroom, where he transitioned to his crib and we completely retired the PnP and RnP. We bought the crib and set it up months before he was born, but we could've gotten away without it for those first six months. Before we moved, he only slept in it once for four hours when he was three weeks old.

  • I use my PnP a lot, mainly when we travel or go visit people. At first, we kept it set up downstairs mainly as a diaper changing station since our rooms were upstairs, or occasionally for naps. I rarely used the napper & it was a huge pain to pack up.
