Tips for encouraging eating with spoons/forks

Any good tips for encouraging it? I've been using praise and helping them guide it, my son is trying but my daughter wants me to feed her. I really can only work on it at dinner/weekends as I don't want them to get messy before school. TIA

Re: Tips for encouraging eating with spoons/forks

  • Well, I know with our lo it was quite the messy ordeal  at first (like 5 paper towels per a sitting).  Also I started off with yogurt (it sticks to the spoon very easily).  I just started putting it on his tray every time he was eating, and praised every time he used it properly. Also I started off just putting a bit of food on the spoon first, and that seemed to help. Hope this helps!

  • Interested in this too. Mine just throw the utensil down and use their hands. They won't let me feed them anything with a spoon. If they can't pick it up and eat it they just won't eat it.

  • DD started showing interest and we just handed her one at dinner one night- she can stick her fork in everything and eat it fine. It takes her twice as long to eat nowadays because she HAS to use a fork..

Spoon- we are working on still. She gets frustrated and throws it. No fun.

With the fork when she first started using it I did hand over hand and showed her how to stick her food then put into her mouth. When I try to do hand over hand with the spoon she screams saying, 'I do,' so I just let her hold her spoon and I'll feed her spoon things- soups and such.

The big thing for me even starting it was she showed interest in it. She would watch DH and I eat and she'd look at her tray and her hand like, where's mine? There's no going back- she's hooked. haha.
  • I just gave the utensils to him with every meal regardless. He'd throw it down most days, but now he loves to hold themeven if he isn't using it. He's getting better with a spoon. Fork still needs some work.
  • I would offer the utensils, but not be concerned if they don't get used. Kids will become interested when they are ready.
  • When is the goal for this milestone? I havent even thought about starting him with spoons yet... i guess we are behind.

  • We started out by putting food on the fork, giving her a bite then while she's chewing put another piece on the fork and set it down so she decides when she wants more. Eventually she figured out how to stick the pieces herself.

I still don't quite trust her with a spoon but we'll get there!
