Hot dog, hot dog, hot diggity dog...

I doubt many of us here are feeding their LOs hot dogs on the regular, but this was worth sharing, because hot dogs were a go-to dinner food during my childhood. And admittedly, I still love them. We buy turkey dogs, but they still have nitrates. We don't let Jax have them now, but some of us with older ones might find this worth reading!

  • Thanks for sharing! I'm not a big hot dog eater, but I'll keep this in mind next time I get a craving for one.

  • Yikes. I guess it's a good thing I never liked hot dogs very much and we don't eat them often.

  • I freaking love hot dogs! I eat them in the summer like it's my job! When I was pregnant I discovered the "nitrate free" ones. Applegate brand? Guess I'll be sticking with those!

Applegate hotdogs are amazing - no nitrates and organic, pastured meat.  My kids get them as a treat when they have been good.  We actually had them yesterday because I was feeling lazy and didn't want to cook a full lunch.

Also, if nitrates are a cancer risk, hotdogs seem to be being singled out unnecessarily.  There are so many processed meats out there with added nitrates - lunch meat, bacon, sausage, cured hams, pepperonis, etc.

That is a good brand! I enjoy their turkey burgers, too.

    Where do you buy these?
There is only one place in my town that sells them - it's a local health food store.  We don't have a Whole Foods or any place like that within a reasonable driving distance, but I bet they sell them or something similar there.

If you're worried about nitrates in other meats, most grocery stores sell the Hormel Natural Choice brand.  Their lunch meats and bacon aren't organic or anything, but at least they don't have nitrates.  When I was able to eat bacon I used that brand.

  • @pinesnow that's an excellent point. I would never. But....I know I consumed at least 12 during the month of July. :\">

Who the eff is feeding their kids 12 or more hot dogs a month?!

My six-year-old son can put down four hotdogs in one sitting.  So he could easily eat more than twelve in a month even if we only had them once a week.  My two-year-old DD eats 2-3 each meal.

(I was thinking about this and should clarify that we don't eat buns.  Maybe that's why my kids eat so many at a time.  I should start doing that to save money...)

I love hot dogs but don't have them too often. Guess I'll be sticking to nitrate-free!
I'm quite sure there were times that my DH and his siblings had 12+ hotdogs in a month when they were growing up. They weren't really fed the healthiest meals (they don't like a lot of healthy food, and would put up fights when my MIL tried to feed them healthy stuff, so I get where she was coming from) and hot dogs are one of my DH's favorite foods. He has had to learn to try/like a lot of things he never would've eaten at home since being married to me. I'm certainly not the healthiest eater, but I also don't subscribe to the pizza and hot dog upbringing.

I think hotdogs are singled out because they are more likely to be consumed by children . Although dd would eat bacon over a hotdog any day. I just don't understand the need for so many additives in foods, which I have become much more aware of because of ds' allergies. I was about to give him cheese for lunch, then I read the ingredients... why is there so much in cheese?

They have some pastured and some that isn't.

They sell Applegate products at our Whole Foods. I'm a vegetarian, but hot dogs and bacon are my weaknesses. I eat one hot dog a year, on the 4th of July!
  • Because I don't feel like googling, do nitrites and nitrates have the same effects? Honestly, while I was pregnant I tried looking for nitrate-free preserved meat here and could find any. at all. :/ And Germans eat preserved meat (not hot dogs, but deli meat) pretty much every single evening.
Ok, and now I'm thinking - so why isn't the leukemia rate higher here?
I don't want my kids to get leukemia, though, obviously. Stupid scary articles.

... is it totally obvious that I had 1.5 glasses of wine tonight...? I think I'm now going to go to bed and dream about leukemia. Awesome. :(
