Success after IF

Wild situation!

So the day after Xmas a friend (who was booking a honeymoon trip) texted us that Del.ta was having a glitch on their site and advertising ROUND TRIP, FIRST CLASS tickets to Honolulu for $62.00 (we live in Massachusetts). Actual cost? $2,300.00 a piece. Obviously, we booked them for a grand total of $124.00. YES, you read that correctly.

Now, we are confused. It's a 10 day trip so there is no way im leaving LO at home. She will be 13 months. This is a total flying time of 13 hours (2 flights with one stop at LAX). One leg is overnight on the return trip. It's also first class - luxurious but it also means (usually) less understanding passengers if G is fussy. That being said we could always switch to economy if necessary.

LO was awesome for our 6 hour flight to St. Thomas last month. She's a very mellow baby and is perfectly happy to play in my arms. We travel a lot and plane travel is no biggie for us BUT we've never done a red-eye before. OH! Plus it's a 5 hour time change. Yikes.

WWSAIFD???!!!

It's only a $124 loss if we don't go... But that also means we are passing up a free $5,000 vacation!! DH is all for it, but I'm on the fence.

I dont know that sounds too flipping amazing to pass up! Shoot I wish you posted about this crazy deal! I would be affraid of the flight as well but the fact of the matter is everyone does it. My trip to hawaii was quiet I slept the entire time and on the way back I was next to three screaming kids. So it's all part of traveling you know. People will deal. Only thing is depending when your going i feel like it would be hard to keep lo in a seat that long. I would definitely still go though!

  • OMG what a deal! Go! It's a great opportunity and other travelers have to understand that there is the potential for a kid to be next to them, first class or not. If you have flown with your little one already then you already know what to expect and how to plan. You all will do fine. It's a long trip for anyone (I live in NH and have done it), but soooo worth it!

      Not giving up yet.
    5 frosties on ice.

Truly realizing how much of a miracle my son is and praying this will be a sibling for him.
  • That is crazy!! DH and I honeymooned on Oahu and our plane tickets were certainly slightly more than $62.00 each ;-) You have to go! Since your LO will be 13 months by the time your trip rolls around, I don't think the red eye will be such a bad thing. At that age, DS1 would sleep at night pretty much no matter where we were or what we were doing. If it was between the hours of 7AM and 7PM, his little body told him it was time to sleep. First class or not, I think other passengers realize there is always a chance that there will be children on the flight. You may not make any friends if your LO is out of sorts, but that's life.

  • Go there is no reason not to, and if things get really bad give her Benadryl our doctor said its fine as we are planning to take LO to the Middle East in late spring. If you get to the airport and board early LO could be sleeping by the time you take off. Put ear plugs in the ears it really helps. Also rich ppl have kids that fly first class and its a chance you take getting on a commercial flight. The good thing is in first there are only two seats so you basically have your own row. Try to get the front seats on plane so LO won't be kicking anyone. You'd be surprised how well lo will do.

  • Go. :) you can't pass that up. The good news is, on a flight like that, it is bound to be a big plane and there may be a galley area between first and coach, so you can always get up and walk around a little with LO and not be in the way.

  • I guess I'll be the dissenting voice here.

I personally think it is pretty rude to bring a toddler onto a First Class flight, let alone a very long first class flight.  Assuming not every one your fellow first class travelers got the deal, then someone is paying a grand or more to sit in First Class.  If it were me, I'd be really upset that there is a toddler right across the aisle from me.  Even though your LO did great on her last flight, you'll never know what she'll be like on her next flight.  At 13 months, she most likely will be walking and she won't be happy to be confined to a seat, albeit a first class seat.  Are you going to let her roam around in the First class cabin?

I'm not saying no one brings a toddler onto a First Class cabin, but that is very rare.  It is actually easier to have an infant on a flight instead of a toddler, because Infants sleep more and are less mobile.

My friends just flew with their 13 month toddler from Boston to France and back (to visit their ILs).  She said that the flight was worse than childbirth (she pushed for 24 hrs then was told she needed a C-section after all.)

If it were me, I'd either:
    1) Go without your LO, or
    2) Go but at least change your seats to economy

  • I'll dissent too and say that first, I would feel weird about taking advantage of a glitch when clearly they were not intending on selling the tickets for that price.  I'm actually surprised they are honoring the tickets.  That's my Catholic guilt shining through.

Second to that would be that I would leave my child at home and go and enjoy my vacation unless I was 100% sure that my child could handle that long of a plane ride.  I'd rather travel with a newborn than a mobile 13 month old.  Even switching out of first class, I don't know, it would just be too stressful for me if my child started screaming and crying for hours, I'd be far better at just missing them.

Kelly, Mom to Christopher Shannon 9.27.06, Catherine Quinn 2.24.09, Trey Barton lost on 12.28.09, Therese Barton lost on 6.10.10, Joseph Sullivan 7.23.11, and our latest, Victoria Maren 11.15.12

Secondary infertility success with IVF, then two losses, one at 14 weeks and one at 10 weeks, then success with IUI and then just pure, crazy luck.  Expecting our fifth in May as the result of a FET.

    This Cluttered Life

  • Hi -
WOW! I heard about this glitch!  You're SO FORTUNATE!!!
Did you already register your LO as a lap child?  Honestly, I think some airlines won't let you take lap children in first, if you already registered it I'm sure it's no biggie, but I wonder if they'll flag you if you add him/her now?
Personally, I would go without your LO, but I also went to China for 3 weeks without my 2 yo this past fall.
On the flip side, I took my LO to Europe when he was 7 mos and it was super, but he wasn't mobile yet so he was fine with our row being his world; I don't think I'd do that trip again NOW.  That said, we got him his own seat that time.
Actually, I haven't flown with him as a lap child since he was 6 mo .... it's just not worth it to me.
Good luck on whatever you decide!  hope it works out!
  • I would go and take LO. The flight would be long but its broken up. Look at it this way, enduring the flights are well worth going to paradise. It will be a trip you will always remember.

We took lo to MAUI when he was 12 months. He wasnt quite mobile yet which helped and the flight was half the amount of time you would be flying. On the way home we lost his one and only paci in the airport so it was rough keeping him happy BUT the trip was totally worth it. Having him on the trip with us was so much fun and better than we could ever imagine.

So all that to say go. Have no regrets. Enjoy.

  • The overnight flight will be the easiest leg - when she's naturally tired. The other flights will be a challenge. The baby bijorn/ergo will be your best friend. Also, don't worry about the time change - we just did a 7 hour with my son. The first night was a challenge but he quickly adapted.
Try and line up some babysitting. We just got back from Miami and honestly the only time we felt free was for a few hours when we got a sitter to go out for dinner. Otherwise it was not such a vaca.

I'm not sure what I would do. I think I would give it a go with LO. If she starts getting overly restless, you and DH could offer to switch seats with someone in economy class.
