Walkers

I apologize if this has been asked recently, but I could not find any similar posts.

I am a FTM and starting to make a list of baby items.  I am curious on your opinions about walkers.  I have 2 SILs, one thinks it is dangerous and the other uses it all the time.  I read an article about them being dangerous if the baby can easily find their way to the top of open stairs while in the walker... which is dangerous with or without a walker.

My niece that used the walker all the time walked well at an early age compared to my nephew that only used the baby jumper.  I am sure there are more factors that are behind it though.

I would love any opinions.  Thanks ladies!

Re: Walkers

  • We had one at my mom's house (she got it as a hand-me-down), we used it a handful of times, but really, they aren't very useful (not sure of the statistics, but just seeing how they work, I don't think they help or hinder). They don't help them walk, and they can get into things quickly, so you have to keep a constant eye on them. I much preferred our jumperoo and exersaucer (one at my house, one at my mom's) to keep them stationary, and pretty much does the same thing. Also, even on the lowest setting, my kid couldn't touch the ground in it until he was pretty much too old for it, but for that couple of weeks it did work for him, he was pretty cute scooting around in it and I think he enjoyed it. If it's a hand-me-down or very cheap, I might get one (also keep in mind they don't work on carpet at all), but I would definitely prefer a jumperoo/exersaucer, also the push toys (like walk behind) were pretty effective.

  • DS had one and used it only for a few months, until he was too tall for it. I won't say it helped him walk or hindered his development either. Once he grew out of it, he really started cruising behind toys, but he didn't walk independently until he was 15m old. All normal.

It was a good "toy" that kept him occupied and contained when I need a few minutes to myself. However, it did tear up the corners of my walls (baseboards).

  • I would go with an exersaucer or jumperoo. Your baby may like one and not the other, so you can wait and test drive a friends? We had both (and a walker lol) and it was nice to keep her entertained while I worked on finals my senior year of undergrad. Similar to the swing/bouncer discussion it's definitely a personal preference.

Maybe register for one or both?

  • My daughters pediatrician recommended we don't get one. She said a lot of kids end up in the ER because of them. One interesting fact she told my husband and I that I never knew is that their banned in Canada because of how dangerous it can be for babies.
  • I never bought one for my son.. Waste of money and doesn't help them walk either

This is true. I had my aunt get me one from the US.
