January 2014 Moms

Is this completely crazy?

So, we've had our nursery the same since our first DD was born in 2009, and I'm kind of over the style. Since finding out I was pregnant in May, I said to DH that I'd like to try and make some changes, like adding some moulding and painting white the area below the existing chair rail and painting the top half of the room a pretty gray. Since we are team green, I'll wait until the baby is born to order some new accessories (or re-use some of the pink we have if it's a girl). Of course--we never got around to it and earlier this week mentioned something again, but did not think we would have time to get anything done since Dr. told me I'm a "time bomb" at my last appointment and if baby is not here by 1/14, I'm being induced.

Last night, DH ran into  handy neighbor and mentioned we might have some work we'd like for him to do. He came over later, and told us he'd do the work pretty inexpensively and could start as soon as we had our materials together, and so last night we took everything down from the walls and I'm off this afternoon to find the moulding and pick out paint. OMG. It should only take a day or two, but still, I can't believe we are doing this so late in the game.

Please tell me I'm not completely nuts--although I'm afraid I am. Haha. Anyone else taking on last minute home projects before baby arrives?

Will baby #3 be another girl?

I am finally getting things done at home also, since my dr took me off work a couple weeks ago I now have the time to tackle my projects. So no I don't think your crazy lol

  • I'm doing some last minute decorating. (or rather DH will be ;)) But not too much work. We need to hang curtains and install bookshelves. Did I mention I do not yet own either of these items?

  • I think that's totally fine and not all that uncommon - particularly if you plan to have the baby with you for the first couple of weeks and not in the nursery. I've got the nursery pretty much done (DD will be sleeping there from day 1), but we are right in the midst of finishing our basement.

When we initially signed the contract back in October, we stated we wanted it done by early January. There were lots of delays and then they stopped work altogether for 3 weeks during the holidays and won't start back up until Monday. The space is just framed - that is it. No drywall, electrical, egress window, ceiling, flooring, etc. So there is a ton to do, and I'm like "I could have this baby any day now and I really don't want all sorts of workers in and out of my house and making a ton of noise with a newborn."

I'm really annoyed that despite all our planning, we are exactly where we didn't want to be at this stage with this project.

  • Since you are having someone do it for you, I don't think it's crazy at all. Theoretically, even if you were to go into labor today, he could be at your house finishing it up while you're at the hospital.
  • This is why I love you ladies--when I was talking to my sister this morning, she was completely trying to talk me out of the whole thing and told me I was nuts. Haha--I feel like that motivated me even more to get it done quickly. ;-)

  • Yep, totally not crazy. Good luck with the projects, I would love to see the final result :)

  • My house has sawdust everywhere because my husband is finishing up custom built-in shelving in the nursery closet, and installing new baseboards.... You're not alone. It's odd to me that I'm packing my hospital bag today, and the nursery is still a construction zone. C'est la vie!

  • Not crazy at all! I want to paint our nursery too before we stick on our anchor decal but since the little guy is getting evicted this Tuesday, I don't think it's gonna happen. ;)

  • Better now than after baby gets here!! Sounds like a fun project

  • You're not crazy, especially since you and DH aren't doing the work and it's being hired out.  Worst case scenario, the room is unavailable for the first few days after baby is born.  Baby won't remember/care.  It might be stressful, but I'm sure it'll all be worth it to give the room a little facelift!

  • We just finished sanding back/repainting the baby's room, including doors, frames, ceiling etc. it took 3 days, 1 day of sanding, 1 day of prep/painting with a brush, 1 day of painting with a roller. It can be done! FI has now started on the spare room, and we will do the whole house, a lot of that with a baby. You are fine!
  • When I had to get steroid shots for my baby's lungs at about 29 weeks, my DH freaked. He painted the nursery in the middle of the night. I kept telling him, if she comes now, she will be in NICU for some time and will not need the nursery yet. Now that I made it this far, I cannot get him to get any last minute things done! Nothing important but just little stuff. Now, I'm like...she should come home with us!

Anywho, like others pointed out - you probably won't even have LO in the nursery right away (especially if the project isn't done) and it isn't' like you are doing a huge project! Go for it - have fun!

  • I don't think you are crazy at all, especially since you hired someone.
  • I don't think your crazy. But we are making DD#1 a new "big girl" room so this LO can have her nursery. My DH is in the middle of re-finishing all the furniture for the big girl room and we are still deciding on paint colors for the walls. So no i don't think your crazy, you sound like you are better off than I am because you are hiring the work out :)

  • Just make sure you air out the room for a few days if you're going to paint!
  • I just found out that my induction date is next Friday and LO's crib is still in the box!

When I was pregnant with DS I painted his room 2 weeks before he was born, and we got new windows and carpet installed in the nursery the following week. We put the crib together on Tuesday and he was born on Friday.

We are procrastinators in this house so very little sounds crazy to me :-)
