Oh, Long Island/Blizzard/etc.

I'm sitting here in what they've deemed a blizzard due to the white out conditions, not so much the amount of snow falling. There's a good 6 inches in an area where it hasn't been blown around with up to 3 still expected. We aren't plowed. The major expressway just reopened at 8 am after being closed for 12 hours and my job still hasn't updated their system as to whether they are open. My husband said "All well, we aren't plowed. They can open all they want. Go say hi to the couch and relax". I love this man. ;)

I'll probably spend my day looking up newborn photos ideas or something equally as fun. Any plans for any of the other women snowed in?

  • Probably googling cool baby products.  Just found one called Mod Swad and I kind of want it.
  • Loading the player...
  • I'm definitely NOT snowed in but it's 45 degrees here in Florida. Amazing! I actually get to wear my coat and scarf!

  • We are definitely snowed in here in SE Mass. I plan to spend the morning working on our registry. It's so daunting but since we are only four months away...I need to get my butt in gear ;)
  • I'm in north Boston, it's still coming down here! And I'm supposed to work tonight, HAH! I plan to lay around because my back hurts (tried to be a good wife and shovel yesterday) and maybe clean up a little.
  • I'm in Brooklyn. They closed the schools and I'm laying around all day. The husband works from home so no day off for him. I figured I'll get around to taking down the tree and decorations at some point today.
  • My husband is trying to make me go to the movies. NO NO NO.

I hate the movies, and every kid with a snow day is going to be there. Whineeeeee I just wnat to stay home!

I'm going to pretend the tree is down. Maybe I'll work on that tomorrow. :)

If you do go, god bless you. I can't handle sitting in those chairs that long. We tried a Anniversary show at Lincoln Center in December and the show was fantastic! But my back, and legs were killing me the whole time.

  • It's 32 degrees here in SC!  I guess it COULD snow, but it won't.  I remember the LI snowdays...usually it meant shoveling snow all day!  We had a REALLY LONG driveway...I hate snow!

Yes! Our driveway thankfully has 4 cars on it currently so aside from shoveling around the cars and once they get around to plowing us out, cleaning what fell between them, the driveway isn't too bad. The rest of the property is a mess.

Where on LI are you from?  I grew up out east (Wading River and then Jamesport).  I remember us neighborhood kids would make these huge blockades in the middle of the road and wait for the snowplows to come...we would throw snowballs at the driver.  One time, the driver got out and started chasing us and throwing back.  Ahhh...the good ole days!

Born and raised in Calverton, with stints to Las Vegas, NV and PA for college, and a brief year in Orlando, FL. We currently live in the Holbrook area. I definitely miss my younger years! People were way less uptight and much more involved with neighbors!

You're right near me!  Where are you delivering?  I'll be at Stony Brook.

Have you  been there before?  I'm a little nervous about it - not crazy about being at a teaching hospital and I've heard about residents and students coming in at all hours, waking up the baby to check the same things over and over.  I made it very clear with my OB that there are to be NO STUDENTS allowed.
  • This is our first, so I have never been in Labor and Delivery. BUT, I did have a long conversation with my midwife about my expectations. I don't mind a student coming in with the resident or nurse while I'm laboring, BUT any explanations need to be done outside of the room so I can maintain my focus. I also stated that I did not want a student involved in the actual delivery. My midwife assured me that my requests were fine. I also want to be left alone unless there are complications while I'm laboring. Truthfully, I'm hoping to arrive at the hospital ready to push. Baby could have other plans, but we'll see. Once I'm in my post partum room, I'm going to make it very clear that I only want to be bothered/baby to be bothered for absolutely necessity's unless I call for someone for assistance. I'm hoping to be discharged as soon as I feel up to it. I'm not a big hospital fan, period. I have however been in the hospital for other reasons and they were really great all of those times. I severely sprained my ankle back in June. While in the ER, I saw a student, two residents, and the x-ray tech. They were all wonderful and super attentive. The student, when asked a question they didn't know the answer to, immediately grabbed one of the residents and I had my answer in less than 5 minutes. :) I don't have a problem with students, they have to learn from hands on experience. I have a problem with multiple repeated interruptions while trying to recover/labor. My MIL is a nurse for a NYC hospital, and will be present during labor, so she's got my back as far as speaking up for me when I'm in pain and don't want to be bothered. DH is probably going to panic and be overwhelmed and yes anyone to death, so MIL is really my cheerleader in that regard.

  • I'm delivering at Stony Brook too! I have had nothing but great experiences with them and have lived on Long Island my whole life.

Oh my goodness!  I went to Riverhead High School!  I grew up across from Lewin Farms, and then my family moved to Jamesport to be on the Bay.  Small World!  And I have a VERY good friend that works at Stonybrook who also went to RHS....she isn't a nurse, does something with marketing!

Definitely small world! I didn't end up attending Riverhead, I went to Longwood, but most of my elementary school friends graduated from Riverhead or Bishop Mcgann/Mercy!
