April 2014 Moms

Paranoid about driving in the snow now that I am PG.

We got about 6-7" of snow last night.  Today it is blowing like crazy and the windchills are near zero.  They have cleared most of the main roads, but I live at the top of a huge hill off of a very windy road.  It is very busy at work and I really should drag myself in there but I am kind of paranoid about getting into an accident or getting stuck somewhere.  So I am sitting here agonizing over whether to try to leave the house or not.  Most of my coworkers have made it into the office so that is making me feel even more guilty.

  • Do what's best for you! Don't let guilt pressure you into going in if you don't feel safe.

  • Don't do it if you're not comfortable. Feeling guilty about working from home is nothing compared to feeling guilty about getting into an accident when you thought it wasn't the best idea to be on the road.

that said, if you do to out, break with the engine, leave a lot of space between you & the next car, speed up and stop gently, and stay off the gas on turns.

  • Thanks - I am not usually paranoid about driving but keep thinking if anything happened I would feel so guilty.  And if I do get stuck I am not exactly in shape to walk anywhere in zero degrees.

  • Same here! I got in an accident in November and it was a terrifying experience since I'm pregnant and now with the snow I'm so scared of driving. Drive as slow as you want :)
  • Yes! I'm even more afraid with my DS in the car! I had to take him like 7 mins down the road yesterday to daycare and I was terrified!
  • I'm so paranoid this winter, it's not even funny.  During our ice storm, I made DH drive everywhere.  I couldn't make myself get behind the wheel.

  • I'm paranoid driving in snow even without being pregnant so I definitely don't drive now. I get weirded out being in big crowds also.

  • I opted to stay at home. My drive is just under an hour on a good day - on a day like this I'd be looking at 1.5-2 hours. Plus I talked to my dad who had to take his wife to an appt and he said even his road, which is flat and not windy, was slippery and slow going. Unfortunately I will have to go in tmrw to take care of a few things.

  • We got well over a foot, I drove the 26 miles into Boston this morning. Wasn't too bad and no one was driving like an idiot so it made it even easier. Unfortunately the stock market doesn't take a snow day
  • I drive 40 minutes each way with my toddler in the car.  I hate any inclement weather.  This year I am short on accrued sick days for maternity leave so I have not been calling out.  I totally get how you feel!

If you can, just call out.  I was going to call out today even with the sick day issue, but we got cancelled.  Good luck!!!

@alysemciver - which direction do you drive from to Boston.  I drive about 20 miles into Boston everyday too :)
