NBR - opinions on this hair color

I use to be naturally very very blonde. Once I had DD, my hair gradually started getting darker. I guess it's now like a (lighter) dirty blonde. I am tired of the maintenance to highlight back to my reg light blonde. I saw a pic on Pinterest that I really like...but im a bit nervous about. I already sent the pic to my stylist and she said it is doable. My root area would be a tad lighter than in the pic. Questions:
1) is ombré to trendy?
2) I am going to be 32 in less than 2 weeks. Am I too old for this kind of color?
3) is ombré a color that only looks good when you style your hair? For example...if I wear a ponytail am I going to resemble a cousin of a skunk?

Re: NBR - opinions on this hair color

  • It is pretty trendy and I do think it only works when you have a certain hairstyle (won't work if you have a bob), however, if done correctly, you should not look like a skunk.

Do you wear your hair down often? How long is your hair? What style is it?

  • Please don't. I agree the maintenance is hard but... This does look like really bad roots unless you maintain it. I very rarely see it executed and then kept up.

  • I think it's cute but hair needs to be in great condition and maintained regularly to pull it off.

  • My hairstylist always makes makes fun of ombré hairstyles. It's like paying $100 to have roots.

  • I think the trend is fading, but maybe that's just me. I have similar color hair, but prefer natural looking highlights with a warmer base color. I've worked out a formula with my stylist that lets my roots come in without looking terrible.

The pic on the left is how I wear it most of the time. The pic on the right is close to my current length. It may be an inch or two longer. And yes...I love my sunglasses. ;)

Ok then ladies, if ombre is a no-go, give me some ideas. I need a hair makeover bc I am feeling too blah.

If you would have asked me two days ago, I would have agreed with your stylist. I'm not sure what caught my attention on this hair color. I think I am having a mid pregnancies-crisis. Getting ready to turn 32 and feeling plump and bland. ;)

It does require regular maintenance to look as nice as it does the first few weeks, but I don't have a problem with ombre styles. They're trendy but cute.

I did an ombre similar to this:
I love this, but I'm too chicken to make that kind of commitment to color.
without the blue- just red. About a year and a half ago (I was 32. But I'm also not working so professional attire didn't matter. I did get a lot of side eyes from family- but I LOVED it). I didn't realize how much upkeep it'd be to keep the red vibrant and let it go back to the plain bleached color- which was also cool looking. But a year and a half later I'm just now trimming the last of the bleached portion out and the ends haven't looked good for probably 6 months.

Something else to remember- bleaching changes the structure of your hair. Makes it more fragile and wear-prone. Which doesn't matter much when all of your hair is bleached- because it just means you need a little extra conditioner and care to keep it healthy looking. If you bleach highlights- it's not a big block so it doesn't show the damage much. But if you ombre with bleach- your ends can become a serious issue. If you condition all of your hair to account for the bleaching- the top can end up greasy to keep the bottom healthy.... or if you don't condition the top looks healthy and the bottoms look trashed after a few weeks. I have had to condition just the bleached portion- which was annoying.

I won't be doing ombre color again, but I did love the look :)

  • I don't think the ombré trend is fading just yet and I totally think you could pull it off.

    FWIW, I would've never guessed you were 32! ;)

  • I went to cosmetology school and I loved the ombre look. I love this color that you have posted as well. You are never too old to have nice stylish hair. Yeah purple hair might be a bit too "look at me" but this look is simply pretty.

    It's a BOY

  • This is my friend I went to school with and we would have this thing called "self enhancement night" once a month where all the students practiced color, cuts, make up ect. on each other. She got this done and I LOVED it. If I didn't love being blonde so much I would do this. It's my favorite ombre look

  • I think blondes pull off ombres a lot better than gals with darker hair. It blends in a lot better. If your stylist knows how to properly do an ombré without making it looks like she painted the color all the way across when it's straightened, then go for it! I had the darker ombré. Dark brown top, caramels & blondes bottom and the way she did it was teased some of the hairs up that went on foil and applied color to the unteased. (If that makes sense) It's some technique I guess and when it's combed out, it has better blending therefore avoiding the painted on look. This I like!

I think mine would be closer to this than the Lauren C pic I posted. The top of the hair here looks closer to my color.

  • I like ombré and I feel that there isn't an age limit. Natural blondes have streaks and are darker at the root and underneath normally anyway. You would just be adding highlights to your natural look, right.
I am a dark blonde myself and have thought about doing this, but am still my natural color right now. I have curly hair so the effect wouldn't be the same and I refuse to straighten everyday.
I do agree that your hair needs to be a little longer for ombré. As long as it's below your shoulders it's doable.
Ask your stylist to do the ombré, but not so drastic. If your roots aren't that dark then it shouldn't be too drastic anyway. Go for it!!!
  • Love it. Trendy, yes, but you're cute and young looking, so trendy fits. I mean that in the most complimentary way.
  • I heard ombre was over. (But what do I know?) It's not very extreme though. If you like it, go for it!

  • Yes, ombre is trendy. No, you are not too old for it. I think it looks great down, but I don't know about having your hair up and how that would look.

I also have blonde hair - what about trying a darker all-over blonde? Or not so much of an ombre?

Big waves. lovely blond on both

  • As a stylist I hate Ombre'. Half the time it ends up looking like you haven't colored your hair for several months and it's grown out. The other half it just looks over done. A lot of stylists don't really know how to do it and end up making you look like it's just regrowth.
