Babies: 3 - 6 Months

"Bedtime? HA! I don't do bedtime."

That is my 4 month old DD talking. Apparently bedtimes aren't her thing. I have tried 6, 6:30, 7, 7:30, 8, and on and on. One week she'll be ready for bed at 6pm. The next week I try to put her down at 6 and she just won't have it. She is constantly changing when she wants to fall asleep but we always wake up around 8-8:30am. Our bedtime routine is diaper change, PJ's, swaddle, nurse, sleep. White noise the whole time. She gets a bath twice a week but her bedtime time preference doesn't change after those baths. I would do a bath every night for more consistency but even with lotion (and I've tried many brands), her skin gets so dry that it cracks and bleeds. I don't even need to use soap or hot water for her skin to get this dry. Is this relatively common?

  • My daughter is still switching around her bed time too.  It is hard to get them in a routine at this age IMO.  She might just not quite be there developmentally.  But dont worry....once you get it all figured out she will get teeth or get a cold or just decide to switch it up again!  :)  At least that is what my son seemed to do.  I think we didn't have consistency until around 6 months and then like I said, teeth would start in and screw the whole thing up!  GL :)

  • Maybe your DD just wants to nap at 6 then go to bed later?  DD is always ready for a nap by 6:30- even if I hold her or lay her in our bed she'll sleep every evening for at least 30 minutes.  Then at 8:30 I put her down for the night.  She's woke up at 8 before and I feed her and put her back down.

  • Have you tried cetaphil after her bath? That might help with the dryness. Have you spoken to your pediatrician about how dry her skin is? My son has eczema and we also have a prescribed ointment for his trouble areas.

I was just thinking that this may be the case! Though I totally understand the, "She is too young for much consistency" thing. I think I need to just let go and listen to what she is telling me instead of fighting it. I keep allowing myself to get angry every night and it is terrible. It makes me feel better to know that this is normal.
