High-Risk Pregnancy

Plaquenil

Hi ladies. I am hoping this is the best board to post this question on. I am wondering if any of you are taking (or took) Plaquenil during a pregnancy? DH and I have been TTC our second child for the past six months. In October I was diagnosed with Rheumatoid Arthritis. The rheumatologist wants me to start Plaquenil and both she and my OB say it is safe during pregnancy. I was trying to hold off on taking anything until after a pregnancy. However, it is taking longer than I hoped to conceive and I am thinking of starting the medication. I can't wait forever to start medication and risk joint damage. Of course it makes me nervous to take it during pregnancy and I was hoping to hear good experiences from anyone who has taken Plaquenil. Thank you!

Re: Plaquenil

  • Hi there... I mostly lurk around the bump, but just wanted to chime in. I'm not yet pregnant, but my wife and I just started TTC (I'm carrying), and I am on plaquenil (along with lovenox, iron, and vitamin d). I have Lupus and a history of a DVT and PE. All of my doctors (rheumatologist, primary care, hematologist, MFM, and RE) all agree that it is safe for me to continue. So, I don't have first hand experience yet with plaquenil and pregnancy, but I've been assured it's safe by the docs (my MFM/high risk OB specializes in pregnancy and autoimmune diseases). Good luck!

  • My last pregnancy was med free, but I will be on plaquenil for my next pregnancy. I worry about everything, but this is one thing that doesn't worry me. Everyone of my doctors supports it and dos not consider it to be a risk. In the past there was a concern of hearing loss with the use of plaquenil, but subsequent pregnancies for that particular mom in the case study indicated the hearing loss had a genetic link. (I'm wording this terribly).

  • Thanks for the responses! I started the plaquenil this week and hopefully it will help my symptoms.
