New perspectives on kids' books

A couple of people mentioned on the UO thread that they have different opinions on some books they enjoyed as kids now that they are older and reading them to their kids.

Has your perspective on any kids' books changed since you were little?

For me, whenever I read LO The Cat in the Hat, I am like why are they letting this strange cat in their household when their mother is out? And how old are these kids to not have a babysitter? ;)

  • Well....my partner and I always chuckle when we read about the 'Brown Nut Hare' to LO. Infantile, I know, but you have to get your laughs somewhere.

  • Snow White and Sleeping Beauty. We were reading them yesterday to her, and it kinda creeps me out that a random guy would kiss a sleeping woman. Reminds me of guys who tries to get their way with a drunk, sleeping girl at a party.

The Little Mermaid- she's 16 and getting married. smh.

The Giving Tree- I don't think I have different opinions on it, but its just down right sad.

  • Yea, I think the only one that's over 18 is Rapunzel (she just turned 18) and Tiana from Princess and the Frog, I think she's in her 20's. Can't think of any others...

  • This isn't a new perspective because I don't remember this one from childhood, but I am also seriously creeped out by this nursery rhyme in one of my LO's books:

    Goosey goosey gander,
    Whither shall I wander?
    Upstairs and downstairs
    And in my lady's chamber.
There I met an old man
    Who wouldn't say his prayers,
So I took him by his left leg
And threw him down the stairs

The bit about the old man being in the lady's chamber seems like an innuendo, and what's with the violence at the end?
  • The nursery rhyme "It's raining."

    It's raining, it's pouring.
    The old man is snoring.
He jumped into bed and bumped his head
And couldn't get up in the morning.

Is it just me or does this guy die after hitting his head?
