Stressing about the stomach bug

I have been surrounded by people who have the stomach bug. I am stressing that I will get it...and this morning I felt like I was going to have it (got really nauseous and pale) & my belly has been rumbling. What happens if I get it? I'll call the doc for sure but does that mean a hospital stay? Timing couldn't be worse with DH away and it's about to snow here.

Re: Stressing about the stomach bug

  • Unless you end up dehydrated from vomiting then you shouldn't need to go to the hospital. Treat it as you normally would. Stomach bugs wont hurt the baby.

Rest, try to keep fluids down and eat when you can.

  • Totaly normal to get any kind of sick while pregnant, though it sucks! Just keep hydrated. With the tummy flu that is always risk number 1!

I had a 24 hour bug with a fair amount of pukes, but was able to keep water/Gatorade down, so I never even called my OB figuring hydration was the only thing they would try to manage. I also never spiked a fever.

  • Thanks all. I'm sure that my stress isn't helping here.
  • DS had it recently, so I understand how you feel.  If you do get sick, don't try to push food too soon, to minimize the chances of continuing to throw up, and suck on ice chips or take very small sips of Gatorade to stay hydrated.  Even drinking too much fluid at one time can make you throw up, so just take it slow.  That was how we kept DS hydrated.

As others wrote, you really don't need to call your doc or go to the hospital unless you spike a fever or get dehydrated.

  • I had the bug over Christmas. Vomitting and diarrhea...with the latter lasting over a week. As long as you can keep down some fluids (if your peeing) your ok. Baby feeds off your reserves for a while.

Hoep you dont get it though....sucks!

  • I just had an appointment with my midwife this morning. She advised me to call in right away if I start to show flu symptoms (achy, fever, cough). The flu is extra bad this year and they would want to put me on meds right away (they are normally super low-intervention).

A regular ol' stomach bug though just has to work its way out of your digestive tract, as pleasant as that sounds. Rest, fluids, etc.

  • I had it on NYE, I found that I was not able to keep water down, but switched to Gatorade and that seemed to work better. For me the worst part was the subsequent heartburn/acid reflux that followed the vomiting. No need to go to the doc unless you get a high fever or dehydration.
