Had a rough time at Destination Maternity today...

I know we aren't supposed to talk weight here... But today was rough. I've been really needing some new maternity pants and the few that I have fit me terrible. I had some Christmas money, so I decided to splurge on a pair of designer maternity jeans. I was in that dressing room trying on practically every single pair in the store for hours and wanted to cry! I wore 28 or 29 pre-pregnancy and I was trying on the largest sizes they had in the store today (mostly 31s) and they were way too tight. The women kept having to say "I'm sorry, we don't have anything bigger". My legs and butt have gotten so much larger, I honestly never realized pregnancy would do this. (I pretty much eat the same as I did before!) Has this happened to anyone else? I'm praying my legs and butt go back to "normal" post pregnancy but I'm not getting my hopes up :( Thanks for letting me vent!

  • I am right there with you. My butt and legs have gotten huge. I am in XL leggings from Kohls maternity. Their XL jeans are too tight :-( I also have huge boobs too and they hurt like crazy! I went from a 30G to a 36H...DH thinks they are great though. Try not to let it get you down, I just avoid jeans and wear jeggings for a jeans look, cute long tops with leggings and I got myself a pair of awesome boots to wear with them. Made me feel better and then I don't worry so much about how much I have changed. Baby girl will be worth it! Don't beat yourself up and remember you will lose it!

When you say 28 or 29, do you mean size or waistband? Cause I wear a size 18-20 pant normally (that's, like, a 40+ waistband), and can still fit into the Motherhood Maternity jeans in XL. NOT the Pea in the Pod jeans, the Motherhood jeans. The PiaP jeans have a slimmer fit through the hip and thigh when you need a relaxed fit and a bit of stretch.

  • I have a good friend who not pregnant was probably a size 8, and even the day she went into labor hadn't gotten to the big round belly stage, just carried in her butt & thighs. 60lbs worth. She was back to pre-preg by 3 or 4 mos pp (granted she's a runner). Everybody carries differently, you'll be fine. Even if it's not traditional 'baby' weight, it's baby weight.

This sounds like me! Everyone keeps telling me "you don't even look pregnant!" Because I'm barely showing in my stomach. But my butt/thighs have grown 3 pants sizes! A girlfriend of mine told me to just wear my pre-pregnancy jeans with a belly band... But I can't get any of them up above my knees. Ahhhh

  • Sorry you had a rough time shopping today.  Trying stuff on with what feels like a body that isn't yours is frustrating. My butt got huge way before my belly started growing.  For a while it was really awkward because my regular pants were ready to split at the seams but my maternity pants wouldn't stay up.

28/29 in designer jeans.. Translated to about a 4/6 in jeans from Gap, etc.

  • Omg I was there today too and the same thing happened to me! I felt horrible about myself and don't think the dressing room lighting/mirrors help at all. ugh. I just can't imagine how big i'm going to feel by the time March/April comes!
  • Oh I'm sorry you had a rough shopping trip. It's such a huge letdown to be excited and not find anything.

I second pp in looking at motherhood. They have a great selection.
  • I'm so sorry. How daunting. Juat think about how happy your baby is and how healthy that baby will be with your weight gain :)

  • I couldn't fit in maternity jeans there either (but Old Navy fit me fine). I think a lof of stuff there - for me at least - was really hit or miss with the sizes and how they were cut. I think it's the store, and not you. I tried on probably 25 things and only ended up getting three stretchy dresses. Plus, finding maternity clothes in general just sucks.
  • I'm very sorry you had a rough time -- it's tough when you want something specific and it doesn't work out like you hoped. Designer Mat jeans don't fit me very well either even though I normally wear Joes and Hudsons when not pregnant. I have much more luck with Gap and Old Navy when it comes to jeans. I know it's a hassle to order online and then return what you don't want, but at least that way you are trying on in the privacy of your own home!

Destination Maternity is Pea in the Pod + Motherhood, right? I have a great pair of leggings that are actually more like heavy pointe pants from PitP that fit and look great - they are PitP brand and they were around $60.

  • I'm sorry you had a rough time! I know how that feels. Even the leggings I have now, I know my legs don't look like they did when I started wearing them at 14 weeks or so (3rd baby and I was bloated why not?) But it's ok. If you can get by with not worrying about designer jeans etc. and just use what you have or buy a tad cheaper, I just deal. I have jessica simpson skinnies from motherhood that work better than past brands I've tried (still stretch like they all do and sag after awhile). I'm lucky I am home so much, I get the most use out of my old navy pj pants and sweat pants and I am a-ok with it. I just keep reminding myself of how strong little one is getting even as I turn mushy, and how much I look forward to a jogging stroller with her and getting my fitness back! Hugs!

  • Ooh you're not alone! I tried them ALL at motherhood. Not once, but twice! Not one of them fit me comfortably or could really get over my legs without struggling. I didn't buy jeans because I ended up with cords to wear for work, but had great luck at gap. Old navy was just as much torture as motherhood. I fluctuate between a 6 and 8 at gap. I skipped the 8 and went right for the 10 and am so happy I did! All of my weight always goes to my legs and thank god for gap. Old navy maternity leggings have worked for me as well, I have med but might need a lg soon. Good luck!!!!
  • I've gained a lot in my hips, butt and thighs too. I've found Old Navy, Gap, and Ann Taylor Loft to be the best for me. I'm short 5'2" and was a 6 before pregnancy.
  • I made the mistake of wearing non maternity leggings (I figured they were stretchy so I could wear them under my bump)... ummm BIG mistake... my butt must have grown... talk about a muffin top... Yikes! X_X

  • Sorry you had such a bad experience. I've really found wearing long maxi skirts to help "skirt" the issue if you will :). They stretch with you, are flattering, and feel like I'm wearing pajamas while still looking nice!

I got mine from GAP and Old Navy.

My first pregnancy I gained in my butt and thighs. DH was sweet and said he like my "bubble butt". It was a summer pregnancy so I wore skirts and maxi dresses. Which is why I have nothing to wear now!

With this pregnancy I'm not gaining in my thighs like I was last time, at least so far! I went to motherhood right before thanksgiving for jeans so I would have something because the belly band was not cutting it anymore. I tried on ALL of their "long" jeans. I settled on 1 pair that I still kinda hate and I feel better when I can tuck them into boots. Jean shopping sucks.

In this case, I'd say that it's ridiculous that they don't have your size. I'd definitely say shop outside designer labels. I'm a 1x in Motherhood maternity, and while the selection isn't great, at least they have my size. Good luck, and sorry you felt discouraged!

  • Also remember, normally we have a billion brands of jeans to choose from. Now we're limited. It takes me so long to find a regular pair of jeans when I'm not pregnant that I love. Try not to be so hard on yourself :-)

  • Maternity jeans were hard for me too. I'm short and finding jeans with my waist size and correct inseam is hard enough when not pregnant. So I have one pair of jeans that I have to roll the bottoms up a few times, but otherwise I wear skirts and dresses. I find them much more comfortable anyway!
