Shots/vaccines for SO/partners?

A mom who works in public health for our local hospital posted this article on her FB wall and I thought it was very interesting and timely. I got my flu and Tdap a month ago (I always get my flu and keep myself up-to-date because I work with children and many adults) and my husband and I will be visiting the Dr. tomorrow, so I am hoping he will be able to get vaccinated then.

I did flu and TDAP, he got a TDAP at work over the summer after a minor industrial accident (Wasn't how I planned for him to get it, but at least he did) and flu vax at the work clinic also.

I also talked to my relatives about flu and TDAP vax. They were very receptive, thankfully. (We remember the bad old days.)

This. DH, both sets of grandparents and our siblings all got the flu shot and TDap.

It's not Santa Claus. It's not something you "believe in" or not. I am pregnant and received a yearly flu vaccine. Do you not believe it happened? Using the phrase "believe in" something or not makes it sound like if you don't "believe in it" that it doesn't exist or isn't worthy of merit. You CHOOSE not to vaccinate yourself. God bless anyone in your hospital who you could infect without even feeling symptoms of the flu. IMO, that's a horribly irresponsible decision and I sincerely hope I never end up in a care facility like that.

It's very sad to see grown women on here put someone down for not wanting to get a flu shot. You all are about to have a child and your on here acting like teenagers. Very sad. This is my first time on here and I won't be back.

I realized I never answered the question. I asked DH to get both the flu and TDap and he hates shots/ but he did as I asked. My mom got one too because she will be primary care taker when I go to work. She even asked my 92 year old grandmothers dr if she needed one but since she isn't typically exposed to children other than mine they said she doesn't need one.

I would be extraordinarily uncomfortable seeing a doctor or nurse who has not had their flu shot. I can't comprehend that decision. I would hope your patients well being is far more important to you than some kind of lightweight "belief" system about if they are really effective and good or not.

Unfortunately my SO has a severe allergy and cannot get the Tdap. I got it and my flu shot even though I had harsh reactions to both I still have no doubt it was the right thing to do for my baby and I and completely worth it.

I emailed family asking them to get the shots and to not come around baby for a few days if they have been exposed to someone with flu/whooping cough in the last week. Most of my family got the shots - even my aunts who live out of state and will only be visiting baby one or two days got the Tdap!

I got my flu shot when DD did (around 28 weeks, I think). DH got his the week before I did, and our parents got them through their work or at regular appointments in October. I had my Tdap before Thanksgiving; DH and our parents got them when DD was born, so they are still good (which I confirmed with my OB). I have some family that will be staying with us a couple of weeks after my EDD, and those that were not up-to-date on their Tdap have taken care of that (they get yearly flu shots anyway, so I didn't have to worry about that).

I'm not even getting into the idiots not vaccinating themselves or those who will be around the baby because PP have covered it.

@andie1090 I am shocked and disgusted that you and 30 of your colleagues have not taken responsible precautions especially since you are exposed to so many illnesses in your line of work.

@Tchaps this board is pretty pro-vaccines, so I don't see why you are trying to be a white knight on your first post! It is decisions like @andie1090 that puts everyone at risk.

Oh, that's right. We don't.

Not getting a flu shot while working in a health care facility is dangerous and irresponsible -- and frankly, pretty darn stupid. We're not acting like teenagers; we are acting like responsible, intelligent adults who are disgusted with a person who has made a terrible and ignorant choice -- one that affects other people.

But if you are going to act like this^, to be honest, we don't want you around anyway. So don't let the door hit ya where the good lord split ya.

It's perfectly find to disagree with what one person (or more!) says, flagging everything you disagree with is not.

We both had the Tdap about 3 years ago when our first was born, plus all grandparents that came to visit in the first few months. I think the booster update is needed after about 5 years (?) so we'll do that with the next baby.

Does anyone know if the flu shot is more highly recommended in certain areas? Or is it just recommended that everyone get it? Mike is one of those "the flu shot gives you the flu!" conspiracy people so he hasn't gotten one yet (I get mine for free at work). Since we don't really have winter weather here and I don't think the flu hits SoCal like it doesn't other regions, I haven't pushed it. Now I'm wondering if if the doctor may have mentioned it at my appt this morning

@mcg1119 Thank you for recomending the Walgreens/CVS option! I had not even thought of that, so I called around and found a really close Walgreens Health clinic that gives both the flu shot and the Tdap. Hopefully DH wont kick and scream too much if I just drag him to Walgreens and not a "real doctor". They also take our insurance and said the flu shot may be 100% covered! Win!
