Pregnant but testing negative?

Has anyone tested negative, but turned out to be pregnant? I'm curious because I'm currently two weeks late, but I've been taking pregnancy tests every few days and they keep coming out negative. I'm extremely bloated and crampy, but other than that I have no other symptoms. I am actually gonna call my doc to make an appointment tomorrow, but in the mean time I was hoping to get some feedback on here from others who have went through this. If I am pregnant I would be 6 weeks, which is strange bc most people find out they are pregnant at 4 weeks. I hate this waiting game. TIA!

  • Thanks for the feedback, we have only been trying since September, so although I haven't yet been tracking my bbt, I have been keeping track of my cycles, which are normally anywhere between 26 and 30 days long. The first day of my last period was on Nov. 20th. I'll hold off on the doctor and just wait it out. Thanks again!
  • I bought a bunch of internet cheapies (step one dip sticks),at 10dpo, 12dpo, 14dpo I got bfn's. On 15dpo I went to Kroger and bought a FRER and got a bfp. I tested with a fourth internet cheapie same day and got another bfn, then just to be sure I tested on the other FRER and got BFP. I obviously had a bad batch of the cheap ones.

  • You don't need to see a doctor until you go 60 days without either period or a positive test. You most likely O'd late.
    This exactly.

And how, exactly, do you know this for sure?  Were you temping/charting?
  • I had my cycles get all screwed up 3 months after stopping the pill. They were perfect 28 days then nothing. Basically went 2 months without one. Yet in the mean time so bloated my pants wouldn't button. Dr did blood test to check my hormones and pregnant the next month. So maybe if you are fresh off hormonal bc could be similar for you too. Good luck!

  • Definitely sounds like maybe you ovulated late or will ovulate late? When I got PG with DS, I ovulated really late... Like my last period was late April and they ended up putting it down as mid May when they dated the baby because it was soooo off. But definitely follow the advice of these ladies. My circumstance was just very lucky and chancy.

  • You're not pregnant right now if the urine test is negative. No need to run off to the doctor. You are probably 'late' because you ovulated later than usual. It happens to a lot of women. Even those women who have 'clockwork' cycles.

Your pregnancy starts from the first day of your LMP. So you are more than 4 weeks.

No. If she knows when she ovulated, the pregnancy starts two weeks before that date. Going off LMP is pretty unreliable, since there are a lot of woman who don't ovulate on CD14 (two weeks into their cycle).

If that were true, then my first baby was 2 months late.

Not everyone has 28 day cycles. With my first, I had a period in early March and got a positive pregnancy test in early June. When I went in to the OB 2 weeks later, they used an u/s to determine how far along I was, and I was 6 weeks. He was born Feb. 3. If I used my LMP to calculate the due date, it would have early December.

  • You're most likely not 2 weeks late. You probably ovulated late. If you're testing negative "2 weeks late" then that most very likely means not pregnant. Wait it out and see if you get you're period, then start temping your bbt so you don't end up in this confusion again

    It's a BOY

  • Start temping. Thermometers are cheap and you'll answer so many of your own questions with fertility friend.

Temping was the only way I knew when I ovulated. The cycle I got pregnant one, I actually ovulated on day 60. Which means I went 2 months with no period. But I also didn't need freak out and run to the doctor.

Temping also gives your doctor an idea if what's going on in case you do need to see them after 60 days of no period.

  • The book Taking Charge of Your Fertility really explains everything, if you are the type that likes to have a reference nearby as I do. I picked it up during my 1st cycle off BCP, started temping correctly during that cycle to get into the habit, along with checking my cervical fluid. I also ordered some wondfo OPK's from Amazon. I followed these steps in m next cycle, and we got pregnant. I know that I will continue to do this after we have our baby.

By charting, I was able to see that those two cycles were about 38 days. I used the OPKs to know when I was about to O, and when I actually did as I had one surge start but I didn't O until the 2nd surge.

It made for over a week difference in my dating. The office had me at 8w3d or so, based on my LMP. But I knew when I O'd, and I also gave them this date. They measured at the u/s, and dated me within 2 days of the timeline that matched with my O date vs. the 1.5 weeks based on my LMP.

The information is all out there to learn, it was very helpful to me and it's pretty easy to pick up on. I definitely recommend it, it's worth it. I also agree with PP, that if you do reach 60 days with no period, then contact your doctor.

  • My best friend was almost 4 months pregnant with her daughter and was still getting negative tests. She finally got some bloodwork done because she felt so terrible but didn't think she was pregnant, and lo and behold - baby!  For kicks, she even took a test a few weeks before she delivered, and it was still negative.

I'd call your doc and see if they can order a blood test for you.

  • How can the OP be such an incredible troll, and then name call, and then not even be pregnant yet posting in the 1st trimester boards as if she IS pregnant and still not be banned?

I used to think the "mean girls" here were actually mean, then I realized they have probably been dealing with random idiots like GINA for a while and just know how to weed them out better than the rest of us. We need the "mean girls" here now. Let them at her!  That would be entertaining!

I am aware, read again: "posting as if she IS pregnant".

Meaning that I don't care that she is posting while not pregnant, I am annoyed/bothered that she insists she is pregnant when she clearly is not. It's creepy.

ETA: Also, even if she were pregnant, she is still being vile, trolling and name calling which is totally unacceptable.

There is no way a quantitative blood test (beta) would be negative (meaning no hcg present in the blood) on a 3-4 month pregnant woman. No way.

Yes, there are the very rare women who don't metabolize hcg into the urine, therefore getting negative urine tests. They are RARE, however, and their blood tests would show positive.

Yeah ok Doc. It happened. Its ok though. You werent there to witness it.

Out of curiosity how old were you when your mom was pregnant with your sister?

It was my aunt that tested her in a hospital. I was 13. Trust me, it was shocking to her too. Its not an everyday thing but it can happen.

  • How many times was she tested? Just once? At what stage in the pregnancy was this test done? Is your aunt a doctor? Was she doing it as ordered by a physician or as a favor? I'm very sorry but the more likely scenario here is a lab mix up, not that her labs showed no beta until 4 months.

  • When I began to suspect I was pregnant, I tested for four days strait, the first 3 were BFN and the 4th one was BFP.  I waited another week to go in for confirmation, and the doctor put us at 5 weeks, which was less than we thought we were. I must have ust been really "in tune" with my body and I realize I tested as early as possible. I don't chart or anything like that so I'm not particularly familiar with the technicalities of everything.

I suspected I was pregnant 2 times before I actually was. PMS symptoms are very similar to pregnancy symptoms. But if you aren't pregnant enough to turn a test, you aren't pregnant enough to have symptoms, no matter hoe "in tune" with your body you are. When you want to be pregnant, you read into every little twinge and think they are symptoms, when in reality they are things you experience all the time and don't notice. It's like how your house seems way spookier when you are home alone or awake in the middle of the night, because you notice all the noises you normally ignore.
For me it was weird because I was really expecting my period, I had all the signs of a period without the actual bleeding. After it didn't come and then symptoms kept up, I started to test. I definitely wasn't planing/hoping to be preg at the time.

Your pregnancy starts from the first day of your LMP. So you are more than 4 weeks.
If she was charting and knows she ovulated late, then she's right on with her dates. According to the doctor she's further along, but if she ovulated 12/17 then she's 2 weeks from conception, +2 weeks preconception that's added on. That's 4 weeks.
Major reading comprehension fail on my part! My response was even stupid to what I thought it was, I should have said usually. I know o-dates can very, but a "general guideline" is first day from LMP. Embarrassed!
  • There is so much stupid in this thread....

  • You're probably not pregnant. I tested negative, but I tested super early, like maybe 5 dpo. I waited, and tested a few days later and got a light positive, and next day it was darker and dr confirmed. I was probably like 3w4d when I found out.

I also went about 8 months with no period and only got pregnant near the end, and only knew with a test. Being late is nothing to freak out about necessarily, especially if you're testing negative. Sorry!
