Smoking and drinking during pregnancy

Re: Smoking and drinking during pregnancy

  • Weed can be addictive and correct me if I'm wrong but if you are smoking drugs then your baby is too so why would you do that mamakiss? Alcohol is a drug and so is weed and one is no better than the other.

My other half was addicted to weed and I'm speaking from experience here it took him years to finally come off the stuff.

I have done tons of reading about FAS and have worked with children with (fetal alcohol syndrome). From what I gathered by reading all the studies is that yes, some women can drink all through their pregnancy and the child will be fine. Some can drink a few times and their baby will get FAS. The alcohol affects different people and their babies in sort of random ways. Most articles say that *no* amount of alcohol is safe. Your child is dependent on you and receives any alcohol you drink while pregnant, why take a chance? Is it really too much to give up for nine months out of your life? I was a bartender for years and refused to serve pregnant women. I think many of you might change your minds if you had experience with FAS. Everyone wants a healthy baby and FAS is 100% preventable!
Carmel5 I myself have done a ton of reading and research and have never seen the study you mention above (bolded). I'd love for you to share a link, citation, or book that you read it in. Because everything I've read and every doctor I've spoken to has never once mentioned it. So, reading more on that study would be really helpful.

  • My grandma told me she smoked and drank during all of her pregnancies and all of my aunts and uncles are fine haha so who knows. I would never risk it. I'm pretty sure they've proven fetal alcohol syndrome is for real, but not sure how they'd explain my grandma's situation

I have no desire to drink while pregnant for the same reason that I wouldn't put a tiny drop of alcohol in my babies bottle or in my child's glass. It just feels so wrong.
No judgement on those who do. I understand light drinking has not proven to be harmful. My friend said it helped with her Braxton hicks and her dr also was ok with it.
  • Hardest thing I had to give up was diet coke. I come from a long line of alcoholics. Never touched the stuff. My grandma died when she was 56 because she smoked and drank. A lot. Had lung cancer, throat cancer and went into renal failure. No thanks. I don't do it when I'm not pregnant, and I sure as hell won't do it when I am.

I, myself, have respiratory issues because of medication that my mom HAD to be on while pregnant. And my dad smoked for the first 13 years of my life. The negative effects on me were enough to ensure I'd never do that to my own kids. (And I'm referring to the smoking. My mom could not go without her medication. I certainly don't fault her that)

Sorry, but if you are judging women who have an occasional drink during pregnancy you need to get off your high horse and get educated.

Actually, your post is kind of dripping with judgment.  There's a huge difference between a pregnant woman consuming alcohol and giving it directly to a baby.  Biology, yo.

The intent wasn't to judge. I expressed a feeling and thought that I can't get passed and that isn't science based logic. Owning up to that isn't the same as judging others.

Did you see the part where I said I've never smoked it and only would to help nausea if research was ever positive it didn't do anything? No need to jump down my back, just read the whole post please :)
  • Even with use of any of the above, I still don't see side effects sometimes.

Example: When I was pg w/DD, so was my friend at the time. She continued to smoke cigarettes and drank Big Slam Mountain Dews alllll the time ('member those?).

I couldn't even smell smoke without puking, didn't drink any caffeine at all.

Our kids were 5 days apart, she ended up with a 9 pounder. He was big enough to crack his collarbone coming out.

I ended up with preclampsia and a preemie born 4 weeks early and weighed 5lbs.

So, even though I did all the right things, I ended up with a preemie and her kid was fine.

Another example: My friend just had her 3rd last year. She smoked with all of her pregnancies, all of her kids had normal birth weights. Her youngest has constand ear infections and is getting tubed. But not her other kids. Who knows what it could be from.

Another example: Another friend of mine has 3 kids. Didn't smoke, all the kids are fine. Her last kid, she had 2 big cups of wine a few weeks before she was born. The kid is totally fine.

I don't have a case for or against, I'm just citing examples I've seen personally.

  • I smoked pot, cigs, drank when I got PG with DD. I quit everything when I found out I was PG.  I did have a few glasses of wine in 2nd and 3rd tri and plan on doing so this pregnancy as well. I love the taste of wine. I smoked occasionally before I got PG this time, but would never smoke during pregnancy. Plus the smell just makes me want to vomit. I also smoked pot occasionally, but unless I had very severe m/s I don't think I would consider smoking while PG.  One or two hits to help nausea probably wouldn't hurt much but I couldn't imagine being "high" while PG. Or drunk for that matter.

I know someone who smoked pot during all 3 of her pregnancies, like every day.  Her kids are rather slow...they don't have disabilities per se, but one of them in particular looks like she is perpetually lost.  Not very smart either.

Here are a couple studies you might find interesting then (probably not on your previously read list):

    R. Alati, et al, "Intrauterine Exposure to Alcohol and Tobacco Use and Childhood IQ: Findings from a Parental-Offspring Comparison Within the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children", Pediatric Research 64, no. 6 (Dec 2008): 659-66

    A. Skogerbo et al., "The Effects of Low to Moderate Alcohol Consumption and Binge Drinking in Early Pregnancy on Executive Function in 5 Year Old Children," BJOG 119, no. 10 (Sep 2012): 1201-10

Let me know if you'd like a couple more... There are ones done on 6-7 year old behaviors after prenatal alcohol exposure, risk of preterm delivery with alcohol consumption during pregnancy, effects on overall pregnancy outcome, risk of fetal death, risk of first tri miscarriage, etc.  :)

ETA:  Your baby doesn't receive ALL the alcohol you drink - it's filtered through you, and the problem is then if you drink more/faster than you can filter it can be passed through and then the baby has to filter (if possible).  As far as my understanding goes.
  • I am reading "Expecting Better" which is written by an economist from the University of Chicago. She is rational and clear and uses a lot of data to back up her conclusions.

She felt ok with small amounts of alcohol, but the speed does matter. So slowly drinking a glass of wine is NBD, but 4-5 drinks in a row is certainly out. I had some champagne when a dear friend got engaged, and a few sips of DH's sangria on my birthday. I feel ok with that, and I am also ok if others are horrified. We do what we feel is best.

There are absolutely no positives or upsides to smoking while pregnant.

  • @TigerLily12345 - The articles I posted are the ones she uses to support her book.  :)
  • After reading all the studies I could on the safety or harm of alcohol during pregnancy I was left very frustrated. So much conflicting information and nothing to absolutely convince me that low alcohol consumption is either safe or harmful. If I'm going to judge anyone it will be the researchers creating the studies, the doctors with their uncohesive (is that a proper word, I'm just so tired) messages, and the medias bad reporting, interpretations and drama. But no, I will not be judging mothers who have a sip of champaign this NYE and nor am I on my high horse when I say I will abstain so don't judge me either.
I ended up looking at reviews of that book a pp mentioned, which is just as controversial and finally found an opinion which I can relate to. I don't think this doctor is judging the issue either way:

Uh, yes you do. You guys also smoke everything and have sex with anything that moves. I also heard you are always naked and leave your babies unattended except when you are sticking a bottle full of formula down their throats.

You guys are just so friendly here. Bye, I think I will go find a forum where the discussions are mature.

Smoking (anything) is just gross to me.

This all stems to the one time when I was 8 and I rolled up a paper plate and lit it on fire thinking I could write my  name in smoke like the Indian guy does on Looney Tunes. Well, inhaling burning paper plate is how I imagine inhaling any burning thing would be. Scarred me for life.

Think I'd go to jail if I encouraged my children to do this? It definitely kept me from smoking.
This is unrelated to this post, but the bolded made me laugh out loud :)

  • I couldn't imagine smoking while PG after seeing all the nicotine & stuff come out of my walls as a child. My sister had to use a humdifier because she was sick and lets just say our pink & white walls were not pink & white anymore. The glass of water that my parent left out for her looked like coffee with all the stuff that dripped out of the walls and ceilings.

Just couldn't imagine that stuff going into the baby.

Yesterday is gone. Tomorrow may never come. There is only the miracle of this moment. Savour it. It is a gift.

  • During my brief stint in nursing school I wastold after first tri occasional use showed no harm. I think that as long as it's not excessive it's fine. My mom smoked the whole time she was pregnant with me.

  • I have understood that a glass of wine in moderation after the first trimester is acceptable but the baby does get the sedative affects as alcohol is a substance that def crosses the placenta. Personally for me I can't drink a drop knowing it crosses the placenta.

As for smoking..birth weight isn't the only bad effect. In the What to Expect book it equates smoking cigs to putting baby in a smoke filled room without ventilation. The quality of oxygen baby receives from a smoking mother is compromised. Nicotine also crosses the placenta and can cause withdrawal in a newborn.

Personally like it or not people have choices. I really try not to judge but with everything they do know it is hard not to wonder about someone who knowingly does these things. Remember the baby has no choice. I hope this doesn't peeve anyone.
