Live In Nanny?

A few of the day care sticker shock comments have me curious about the cost of a live in nanny. Does anybody know what the cost is in the US and/or how to go about finding one? That would be sooo incredibly nice to have one available all the time. I might work my part time job to pay her even if all my paycheck went to her!! Has anybody had a live in nanny or currently have one? Is a live in nanny even realistic to think about? The idea seems out of reach for most but maybe it's not. A few posters seem to think a live in nanny may be cheaper than the daycare route since you are providing room and board, especially if you have multiple kids. I would only have one that would need nannied but I could certainly use another person driving the other two around as well!

    I have been a live in and live out nanny before some people charge unrealistically and others work with your budget since it would be a live in the fact that they have "free rent" should lower the cost drastically for you

    I grew up with them. My dad worked and my mom passed away when I was 7.

    Do you have the website sitter city available to you? I know a lot of people that go through it.

    This is encouraging. Will have to do some research on those sites. May have to convince DH we need to buy a house with a separate extra bedroom for this purpose! @v1981 so sorry about your mom. What an amazing dad you must have to make sure to take care of you so well! @kbarden22 what did you charge? Was your schedule on all the time or did you have weekends or set times off? Did you enjoy being a live in nanny? So many questions for you.

    No personal experience, but DH's boss has an au pair for their kids (either 3 or 4 kids, I can't remember).  That's another option, too.  I'm sure there are au pair services out there.  I think one of the biggest limitations is time frame.  If I remember correctly, and au pair can only be in the country for a certain amount of time (1 year?), so you have to get a new one when the time is up.

    Am investigating cost right now - from what I have heard 50-70k per year (live in).  I live in a high COL area though.  I am having a convo with a company tonight and will report back tomorrow if it helps.

    70k!!? That's what a teacher with a masters makes. That's absurd.

    I live in one of the most expensive areas in the country for childcare. Our live out nanny earns $16 an hour.

    I live in a very LCOL area. Daycare for a newborn is about $600-$700/mth to give you an idea. I've seen several ads for live in nanny's offering $600-$800/ mth + room & board.

    Live in nannies can be super expensive. I used to be a full day time nanny :7-3 pm or similar hours and got 11/hr for one child then 13/hr for two. It's a very tough job, and it's exhausting.

    As someone who has been both a full time nanny and a full time teacher with a masters degree, the nanny job was wayyyyy more work and super exhausting without summers off. IJS

    I have been a summer nanny, full time nanny and a mothers helper. Personally a mothers helper is great! A lot of the time I take the kids to birthday parties, after school activities, start dinners and help with homework. And one of the mothers I work for doesn't work - she has 4 kids and her husband travels. Just an idea in case you don't want to buy a new house ;)

    Most mention nanny's from abroad. I will say having worked and hired from care.com and sittercity.com those are not generally live in nanny types. More baby sitter, or nannies (non-live in) But who knows you may find some.

    For us it just wouldn't work with our personalities, we're private people and I wouldn't want someone living with us even if it saved us money.

    Just spoke with a company that provides this service in my country. She estimated 50 to 52k per annum - live in (we have a separate apt downstairs). That is a gross salary estimate. And is a bit more expensive than if we found a nanny ourselves rather than going through the service. We would get 50 hours per week with full annual coverage ( ie if our nanny is sick/on vacation we get someone to cover for no additional cost). Additionally, cost doesn't go up if we have another child. As I said we live in a high cost of living area - so keep the above in context.

    A few ideas outside the box: if you're religious, ask around at church. There are often young women looking for a living situation who love children and would love a set up like this. Another idea is a college student whose schedule would work with what you need who is getting a degree in early childhood education or similar. I would hire a company to background check for me in a situation like this. I know a lot of families who have set-ups similar to these and have had very long term success with women who they now consider part of the family.

    I stayed home with my newborn for 16 weeks and found that easier than teaching, but that's my opinion. I'm also not cut to be a SAHM.

    The highest I have received was 250 a week for 2 kids out in the middle of no where. I drove the 3rd grader to and from school and then took the preschooler to his class for a few hours. I kept the house clean did the kids laundry made sure their homework was done and prepared dinner their dad would come home around dinner time check off the kids homework and get them into showers and bed. The wife was away at work during the week and I had weekends off. I also did the grocery shopping for the house which they reimbursed me for . I have also worked for a single mother who just moved to town to get away from her crazy ex husband who I really undercharged for her. I made 150 a week for a 11 year old girl and a 9 year old boy with special needs. I knew she needed the extra help so some weeks I only made 100. I work with my families because our family has been there I know what it's like to need the help but not have much to offer in payment

    I've been a full time live out nanny before and I made $20 an hour and worked 7-5 so I would have to imagine a live in would be more. Some of DH's cousins all are SAHM and have live in nannies. I have no idea what they pay them though.

    The costs quoted have to include insurance and all the taxes you pay on the nanny usually. The nanny usually doesn't see anywhere near those amounts.

    I too was a nanny for many years before becoming a teacher in NYC. My salary was $20 an hour plus 2 weeks paid vacation a year. I think a live in nanny actually would make less since they are getting free room and board. All of these things are factored in during salary decisions.

    I would try care.com or sittercity.com if you are looking. That's where I have found a few of my positions and I've always had a good experience!
