Born and raised in Boston, but living in the DC metro area.
What's with all the hate on the Boston accent my fellow Bostonians??
It's not that I hate it... I just get annoyed at how much the media thinks we're OBSESSED with it. It's like every commercial and advertisement has to exploit some weird Boston pride via the accent and the tough person attitude. I get it. It's like beating a dead horse lol. And now that movies and tv shows are more interested in the Boston scene, it's just getting worse haha
Well hello, neighbor. Minnesota over here, and the only thing better than cheese and metal are lakes and roadsigns
Your lakes are a lie! Or at least I've heard. Hahah But you guys do also have Mall of America and obscenely friendly squirrels. But then again, we also have beer and brats. Oh. And the Packers and Badgers
Yay! My last BMB with DS had local get togethers when the babies were born and the Wisconsin girls had the most! I think like eight or nine of us had lunch at Red Robins in Milwaukee. So I've noticed quite a few Wisconsinites here

Which base? I have a couple pregnant spouse friends (actually army not af) in nc.
As for everyone who spoke about accents, DH grew up in Alabama and his entire family (especially his dad and sister) have extremely strong southern accents. He has none, doesn't even say "y'all". He says "it's a choice". Lol! I say y'all for him because I love saying it :-)

I don't mind the tough attitude being portrayed cause... yannow... that's us. But the thing I hate hate haaaaaate is when movies are set in Boston and they have non-native actors try to do the accent. Leo DiCaprio in The Departed, anyone? Ugh. Ben Affleck in The Town? Yes.
A Boston accent is SO hard to put on! I think one problem is they try to apply it to too many words, it really isn't that strong most of the time!

I've always wondered, is this an accurate representation of you Boston ladies? It's a stereotype I hear a lot hahaha
It's pretty close! There is a wide variety of Boston accents though and depending on where you grew up it may be stronger or softer. My BIL would probably say it exactly like that
"Dear Lord, I would have loved to
have held my babies on my lap and tell them
about You, but since I didn't get the chance,
would You please hold them on Your lap
and tell them about me?

Aside from a three year stint abroad in my early twenties, I've been a southern California girl my whole life. It's an interesting place to live, and it will always be home

It depends. Some yes, some not so strong. I'd say most say it "cahh keys". Like when the doctor says open your mouth and say "ah"
Some people pronounce khakis differently too lol
And also, when Ben Affleck acts I swear he takes a Boston accent steroid shot... He doesn't sound that bad in normal conversation in interviews. He totally amps it up for movies. And for the record, the Kennedy accent is in it's own category lol

Not so much hatin' on the boston accent that I have. It's hilarious bc any time I travel, people know instantly where I am from! And sometimes, as a teacher, I feel like I should have more control over it when I'm teaching my 1st graders how to properly pronounce and decode words!

For some strange reason pronouncing "idea" for Bostonians is commonly pronounced "idear" ... which is exactly how I say it. To say it without the "dear" ending sounds funny to me. Every time I say that in my classroom my students (I don't teach near Boston) always make comments on how funny I sound lol
Colorado here as well! Although I'm not native, my DH is though. I grew up in western Nebraska, so close enough? I will never leave though, so beautiful!

I was born and raised in Eastern Oregon but now live in Southwest Washington! So hello neighbor!
