Exercising in the 1st Trimester

Hello!

So, I've got a Step Machine, Shake Weight, 3/5/10lb weights, ankle weights & an Ab Roller. I'm pretty sure that most of these are safe to utilize during the 1st tri but I'm a little concerned about the Ab Roller. For those of you who don't know what it is, ya get down on all fours, grip it with your hands, roll forward, pull back & repeat until ya feel the burn. It's got a bit of spring action which does some of the work for you but you do get that slight burn in your abs if you go at it for a bit. It's great! Just wondering if it's okay to use when preg? I'm also wondering if it's safe to squat & plank?? Thanks!! :)

  • If you have the energy then I say go for it. I was and still am very lazy now! Before I got pregnant I was going 4 or more days a week and even upped my squat weight right before my bfp. I always said I would never leave the gym but that's a joke now. I think it's very good for you so go for it

    It's a BOY

  • Hi :-h

You can do anything that you were already doing before you were pregnant, just don't start anything new. Your body will tell you when to back off and modify your routine.

  • It's fine. Why would it not be?

You'll get better results if you stop with the assisted stuff and actually do some real ab work.

I've heard people say that stomach exercises are bad to do during pregnancy, which to me sounds ridiculous. And the Ab Roller thingy is actually amazing! Gave me an 6 pack. Obviously I'm going to lose it now that I'm preg but I'd love to keep as toned as possible until babe arrives. And I also do A LOT of squats but have recently been told that "up & down" exercises are a no go during pregnancy as well! I'm so confused, lol!! I don't use a lot of the assisted stuff but I've got it so just wanted to ask for opinions if I ever decided to start using it again. Thanks!

It's a myth. The stronger your core is the better!

The squat thing is also a myth.

Now is not the time for PR's, but weights are fine. You didn't list any weights that should even be a remote concern (unless you have complications, which changes all of the rules).

And please put down the shake weight. Please please please. That thing is a total joke. There are so many better exercises that don't mimic a hand job.

I forgot to highlight the squat thing. b-(

Shake weight = hand job. Love it!!

I got it for Christmas about 2 years ago. I've attempted to use it about 3 times & NO SHIT, each time lasted about 4 seconds. Felt like a fuckin idiot every single time I started "jerking". I mean really, how can you not?!  LOL :\">

  • I personally wouldn't but I would do planks. Planks are great.

  • But for real, any exercise you are already comfortable with should be fine. I just took a month gym hiatus, because my nausea is more pronounced in the evening, and I just couldn't do it.

I run on the treadmill before my classes, but I'm having to take extra walk breaks. I do all of the routines in class (which is a mixture of exercise ball, free weights, circut training, etc.) just fine. When I do crunches, it feels different, but not in a bad way.
