DH and I are fairly set on Caroline as a FN. We aren't totally sure on the MN and how well it flows. Kathleen was my mom's sister's name. I was very close to her and she passed away when I was 8.
It's a little much together, but I love Caroline as a FN, love how you're choosing your Aunt to honor, and 99% of the time it'll just be her FN said alone, so I say go for it.
If it bothers you, I'd keep Kathleen and find a new FN. But that's me, I value honoring someone in the MN spot more than I value using my absolute first choice name in the FN spot.
I don't think they flow, but I would understand keeping the MN for sentimental reasons. I like MNs that honor someone, but I do not like FNs that honor someone (I think LO deserves his/her own name), so I disagree with PPs suggestions about using Kathleen as the FN.
To me, Caroline and Kathleen work better as FNs for sisters than as fn/mn for one person. I'd pick one or the other for either position and find an alternative.
I couldn't use Kathleen as a FN. Even though she died a long time ago, it's too fresh and painful for my mom, grandma, and my aunt's kids to use it as a FN.
@amoot890, my last name is 5 syllables and really Italian.
DH is extremely set on using Caroline for the FN. NN would be Cara. DS is Tyler NN Ty. The short NN's are mostly bc of the super long last name.

What about Cara as the FN? Cara Kathleen works, and if Cara is what you plan on calling her anyway? Better too with your long LN I'm guessing?
"Hello, babies. Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. At the outside, babies, you've got about a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I know of, babies. God damn it, you've got to be kind."

I can't do Kate as a MN because that's what I go by 99% of the time. I think most people would assume I named her after myself instead of my aunt since she mostly went by Kathy.
I'm thinking we will just have to scrap the idea of using Kathleen as a MN since DH is so set on Caroline for a first name. I basically wanted to validate what I was already thinking - that the flow wasn't great. My mom keeps pushing for it since it honors her sister. I've been kind of hesitant to use it because my aunt had 3 kids and none of them have children of their own yet. I've been nervous that I'd step on toes, but don't want to offend my mom if we go another direction. Thanks for the advice, ladies!
Just read your comment that she has 3 kids and none of them have kids yet... if you decide to choose Kathleen (it sounds like you are leaning away from it), you definitely should consult them first.
Kathy is also short for Katherine. This could be nice. Do you have memories of her that are special to you? Perhaps you could draw a name from that.
Her MN was Louise. I don't think I would ever use that. My formal FN is Kathryn, so that rules out the alternative for Kathy/Kate/Kathleen.
I've mentioned to my mom that I feel that I should talk to at least my aunt's daughter about maybe honoring her mom, but for some reason my mom thinks I should just do it. I don't disagree with my mom on a lot of things, but I don't think there's any way I could do that to my cousins.
DH really is super set on Caroline and not any other variation of it, so I'm fairly positive that is going to end up being her FN.
It's a lot of "ka" sounds... the sentiment is lovely, but the names don't really sound good together. If you'd rather keep the sentiment than have the phonetic beauty, though, you certainly wouldn't be the first on this board!
We considered Caroline Katherine (Katherine is my grandma), but the flow just isn't great....same with Kathleen. I'd use Caroline Louise.
We ended up honoring my husbands grandma instead so my daughter is Caroline Ruth.
I know Louise has a better flow, but it's absolutely not an option. Neither of us like it at all and my mom has told me that my aunt always disliked it.
