Glider question--is the ottoman *that* impt.?

My friend has a Dutailier glider that she got from a neighbor.  It is not new, but she says it is in great condition (smooth and quiet gliding.)  I looked up the model, and it is one of their higher end chairs...in the 500-600 price range.  The only thing I would need to do is get new cushions, and I priced them out around $200 on a couple web sites.

Matching ottomans are another $100-150.... now suddenly I have passed the price I was going to pay for a new complete Shermag set from BRU ($299 or less with a 20% coupon.)

So I ask, do you think it is worth it to take the chair? She is offering it to me for free.  Is it THAT important to have an ottoman that glides as well?

WWYD?

Re: Glider question--is the ottoman *that* impt.?

  • We wont have an ottoman.  My sister gave us a glider without the ottoman, and I'm too cheap to buy one.  I figure if I end up deciding I want one I can always buy one, but if I buy it and find it unnecessary I'll be mad I wasted the money.

  • If you are ordering new cushions, you can order a cushion to match any ottoman. You do not necessarily need to order a Dutailier one.

But to answer your question. I would not like my Dutailier without the ottoman...it is what "makes" the chair for me.

  • I used it early on, I guess it was nice, but it has been sitting in our basement for the last year and a half, so it wasn't essential. You could always wait and order it if you think you absolutely need it after baby??

  • its really nice to have when your breastfeeding but you dont "need" one. I love that i have it though.hth?
  • During the first month, I slept in my glider some nighs while nursing DS.  The ottoman was great during that time.  It does make the chair so much more comfortable for me so I would want one.

  • To me, yes, because when I'm tired I like to be able to put my feet up while feeding LO. You can go with it and decide later if it's "really" necessary. I think this is a personal preference. My SIL offered us a glider, no ottoman, but to me the ottoman is what "makes" it, so I politely declined and we got a new set (the cheapest one at BRU).

  • I guess its not THAT important.. in my BF class they said if your shorter it will be easier to have your feet propped up to BF while sitting down.

I got one because I can't see myself without it. When I fed my nephew I loved using my SIL's.

  • To me it's a must have.   I love it -- (no baby yet) but even just when I'm reading and relaxing, I can't picture the chair without the ottoman.  Through it late night breastfeeding in there,  I'm looking forward to having my feet up.

Can you get an ottoman which is any brand -- or maybe just look for an ottoman on Craigs List?

  • I don't have an ottoman and have never thought "I wish I had an ottoman."  We didnt have the space and I didn't want to spend the money.  I am glad I never got one.  Maybe try to go without for now and once baby is here see if you really would use it.
  • Yes. There were so many nights I was up with dd at 3am and to be able to recline the glider and put my feet up while nursing made it SO much more comfortable. I can't imagine not having it. Why can't you just have the cushions that go with it cleaned?

  • I am a new mom.... well, waiting for my first child... anyways... I bought a used glider and have it set up in the nursery.  I am shorter (5'4") and have a hard time reaching my feet all the way to the floor.  I think an ottoman is a necessity.  I am still on the lookout for one that doesn't cost more than I spent on the chair.
  • If you plan to breastfeed in it, I'd recommend a nursing stool over an ottoman. Cheaper too.

  • I took my SIL with me one day for baby shopping because she's a mom of 2 and a postpartum nurse and she said that its important to have the ottoman so that you can put your feet up and to help with blood circulation. I ended up getting the one of the Shermag combos from BRU, it was a b!tch to put together (I hate putting furniture together though,) but its awesome, super comfy and smooth gliding.

  • We were given a glider and looked into getting an ottoman. To be honest for how much they cost I have found in the meantime that I just use my yoga ball. It's the right height, gives nicely to the weight of my legs and rolls as I glide. It was meant to be temporary, and while a little ghetto, it saves us some money right now.

Just an idea of what worked for me :)

  • I don't think the ottoman is necessary. DH and I went and sat in the gliders at BRU and tried to think how often the ottoman would actually be used while rocking LO.

  • Thanks guys. We decided to pass on the offer.  Going to get a new set instead.  I appreciate all your thoughts and feedback!
  • I didn't get an ottoman and didn't need one.  I did, however, get a nursing stool that was priceless to me.
