Nursery storage solutions

I know we've talked a lot about nurseries lately but I've got a question I can't seem to answer. I've got a pretty small space for a nursery. I'm trying to figure out good storage solutions to maximize space. Closet suggestions? Is folding or hanging clothes easier? Has anyone made a peg board and used it for storage for diaper stuff? Arghh nesting has enveloped my brain!!!!

Re: Nursery storage solutions

  • At BRU they have closet organizers that hang from your rod.  I think they're about $20.  They give you spaces to hang clothes and fold clothes in different compartments.  You could also get a few storage baskets or boxes to put items in.  You could also get storage boxes that fit under the crib to put items in.  I've taken boxes and hung them on their sides on the walls that create square areas to store items.
You can also try getting space saving items.  We got a high chair that attaches to one of the pre-existing chairs at the table so that it doesn't use the extra floor space.

  • I'm a FTM so no experience but I often run out of storage space. I'm planning on a dresser/changing combo then building shelves in the closet and putting up an extra rack. I'll put a wheely in under the crib for less used items and probably buy some baskets and boxes for floor storage. I think the main key is to make your closet work!
  • With my son we didn't need or want to hang anything. With this one (girl) half the stuff needs to get hung as dresses etc aren't really fold friendly. I much prefer folding to hanging. I also have their clothes sorted by month/size and just pull out the next size box wen needed.
  • For this baby's closet we bought two cubicle organizers that holds those 10.5" x 10.5" totes. We will have them at the bottom of the closet and the rod still at the top. I like to hang dresses and coats and throw tights, hats, socks, toys, books, etc. Into the totes. It's incredible how much they hold.

With DD1 she has a walk in closet and we installed a closet organizer that can be adjusted to however you want. I love it!

  • In DS' closet I put a cheap bookshelf in there with a couple totes. We use the shelves and the totes for things like shoes and winter hats and stuff. All the blankets and crib sheets are folded and put on the top shelf of the closet. We hang shirts and jackets and use the dresser we do have for pants, socks, underwear, pajamas.

DD has one 3 drawer dresser with pajamas, socks, pants, and diapers (bottom) and we hang shirts and jackets. Her shoes are all downstairs in the hall storage but she hasn't accumulated too many yet. Blankets and crib sheets are with DS' in his closet. We will need to add more storage in her room somehow though because her room will also accommodate this baby's stuff (but baby will be co-sleeping in our room).

We also have a walk-in closet in our room though so we have a dresser in there that is currently housing all newborn diapers and clothes up to 3 months, my Moby wraps, the boppy pillow, some swaddle blankets, etc.

  • We keep all future baby clothes hung. So ones they will grow into. And we use the white three drawer ikea hemnes dresser to house the kids current clothes. The drawers are necessary but convenient. Anything they grow out of is kept in the basement

  • Great idea's.
Currently we will in a 1100 sq ft home. And will soon be a family of 6!!! With 3 bedrooms and 3 older girls. I have no idea were any baby things or baby boy will go! Keep posting idea's please! All I have started to do is going through all my baby girl items for donations and hand me downs for friends. Nothing yet for baby boy. I'm too overwhelmed.

  • We have a 2 bedroom 852sq ft house. Both rooms are 10x13. We will be putting both kids in the same room since moving isn't an option. All I can say is try not to buy to much junk that baby really doesn't need. We have the added joy at our home, being do old the closet has a smaller than average door, so accessing things in the closet is near impossible. We do a combo of folding and hanging. I haven't washed the babies clothes yet but I'm planning on giving DD1 the right side of the dresser and DD2 the left side. We have one of those closet hanging things that I put DDs blankets in.
  • in a closet, it would just make HEAVY use of the wire shelves you can buy at home depot, walmart, etc.  hang two tiers of clothing.  rotate everything out that's not in season/the right size at the moment.

we have this ikea bookshelf for his books, blankets, shoes, toys, and our cloth diaper long term storage.  i'm sure it will be used more heavily once we try to cram 2 kids into the same room.  our changing table was just the top of the regular dresser, and we kept diapers in a big tupperware pull out drawer thing that sat beside the changing pad.

  • I wish anything on my house was that neat @mamagantastic!
  • I got 2 of these from clearance at target for $9.99.  They look great and hold a lot of stuff.
(BTW Target has an amazing baby clearance right now).

I have something similar for my first, from Bed, Bath and Beyond but it was more expensive and not made for babies - I like this one much better.

  • All the little baby stuff organized on the back of my closet door.
  • We have an under the crib drawer. It's on wheels and pulls out, we got it at Ikea and it's perfect fitting with our Gulliver crib. I'm not sure if they still sell them or not, since we bought quite a long time ago.
Even if they don't sell it, I bet you could find something similar (probably plastic) like an under bed storage box. Just make sure to measure because our crib is pretty low and a regular under bed box didn't fit.

  • We are doing something like DemoDolls for our closet. We are putting up readjustible closet bracket systems so we can move things around and space them how we want. I like the option of the bins for things like socks and hats plus the shelves for extra blankets and such. We have a small room too so I don't want to put a dresser in there. We will just have the crib, rocking chair and side-table. Everything else will go in the closet. If you don't have a closet I would say get a cube bookshelf and label all the bins instead. You could fold things in there and have them all within easy reach.
