Weird new symptom- Geographic Tongue

I just noticed a weird patch on my tongue. Looks like all the taste buds are missing. It totally freaked me out... I can't remember burning my mouth on anything recently or any other cause for this to have suddenly appeared.

So of course, I run to Dr. Google and type in "tongue spots" and what do you know... lots of images pop up very similar to what I'm seeing (and some gross ones that do NOT look like what I have). I will spare you all a pic of my actual tongue.. feel free to DrGoogle it yourself ;-)

After a quick search, I have self diagnosed myself with "Geographic Tongue" which is apparently a harmless condition that can be caused by many factors including allergies, diabetes, and hormone changes during pregnancy- all of which I am currently dealing with. I will show my doc on Monday but for now I'm feeling secure that its benign and will go away after delivery. Just thought I'd share as this is the first time I've ever experienced this and I'm pregnancy #3! Always something new!

  • I don't think this is really a pregnancy symptom. I have this 'condition' and have my entire life. I actually was told what it actually was when I became a guinea pig for a friend who was becoming a dental hygienist. She was so excited to see this since apparently it's not that common, but it is harmless. The spots move around, so to speak but I think it's really more of something your born with.

Sorry, you are right. The stuff online says that it can be genetic and lifelong for some, but that for a lot of people it suddenly appears during a hormonal shift or something else sets it off. I look at my tongue/mouth a lot (have a lot of throat issues and such) so I'm pretty sure I would have noticed something like this.

i also have had this at least since adolescence. typically the geographic tongue flares up in times of stress, illness, certain foods, alcohol-- but I am not sure that pregnancy can cause you to start having geographic tongue but certainly it could become worse with hormonal changes I suppose. Last I read, only a few percent (somewhere between 1-4%) of the population has this- it is very rare. Hopefully this is not what you have, because it is NOT fun. People catch a glimpse & think you are diseased (when it is benign & not contagious), it can be very painful (especially when eating/drinking certain things. Hope you feel better, and rest assured that it most likely is not geographic tongue- Dr Google is not a real doctor!! :)
Hmm, this is not painful at all and most of the descriptions online also say its not painful.  But then again, I saw a dental study showing how vastly different it can be from person to person.  I wouldn't have known it was there if I hadn't seen it while looking at my tonsils.  And yes, I know Dr Google is not real- I was joking!  I'm the first person to say "call your doctor" but in this case, I don't think it's anything concerning enough to bother my doctor on the weekend.  But believe me, my body is so screwed up right now between thyroid issues, GD, HG (earlier in the pregnancy), serious allergies, and of course general pregnancy hormone wackiness... I could absolutely see one or more of these issues setting off something like this.

  • Geographic tongue is fairly common (actually DS and I both have it) but it wouldn't be unusual for you to first notice it during pregnancy.  It might be the first time you've had a flare up (even if that is true you technically have had it your whole life if you have it ever).  Some people have a burning sensation go along with it, especially if your flare ups are due to stress.  It shouldn't cause any real problems though.
