Grandparents' names?

What will/do your kid(s) call your and SO's parents? And how did you /they decide? My LO will have an Opa and a Nana (my parents) because that's what they asked to be called. DH's parents will be Grandpa and Ganga because my SIL has 2 boys already and that's what they go by for them, so we want to keep it the same obviously :)

Re: Grandparents' names?

  • My mom will be Grammar (she's a stickler on using proper grammar all the time, plus it's unique and funny) and my dad will be Grandy. I haven't asked the in-laws yet, but I'm supposing they'll go by Grandma and Grandpa.

  • Mil and fil will be granny and grandad
Mom and sf will be gramma and granpa
Dad and am will be nana (nahnah ) and nani (Urdu for mothers after and mothers mother. )

  • My mom originally was nana my dad was papa.

His mom was grandma and his stepdad was grandpa.

His mom passed away this past jan so my mom has kind of taken over grandma. (DS also calls SOs mom grandma when he sees pictures)

My dad had turned to drugs, so he isn't around.... So his stepdad is now papa.

All just what DS decided to call everyone. He also calls my grandma "GG" (great grandma)

    Wow that was long
  • DD was the first grandchild on both sides so my parents and MIL got to decide their names when DD was born.  My parents are Grammie and Pop Pop and MIL is Memee.  [MIL and I don't have the best relationship.  DH and I don't know how she wants to pronounce her name and we actually don't think that she knows how she wants to pronounce it.  We caught her referring to herself as grandma on Christmas Eve.]

  • My parents decided on Grammy and Poppy. In-laws are grandma and granddaddy. But it will really depend on what LO actually calls them. My nephew started calling my MIL Happy Maw and it has stuck! So we'll see.

  • My mom and dad are Mimi and Papa. MIL is Mom-mom. And if we call DH's dad anything it's Grandpa D.

  • Ours call both sets Granny and Papa. It's what I called my grandparents, and DD picked up on it. My parents are Granny and Papa with the puppies (cause they have a dog), and DH's parents are Granny and Papa with the kitties (they have a cat). Works out well. :)

  • My MIL is Mimi and FIL is Lito ( they are Puerto Rican). My parents are G-ma and G-pa :)
  • We have Momo (Maori is Gaelic for grandmother, but dd turned that into Momo) and Java (my dad's family nickname), MIL is Nanna, FIL is Pops. And my grandmother is Nanny because that's what she is to me.

  • My parents will be Grandma and Grandpa, and Inlaws will be Nonno and Nonna (they're Italian and that's the translation). My grandparents will be Grammy and Papa to the baby because that's what I call them.
  • Ds calls my parents grandma and grandpa. They like the traditional.

Dh's mom doesn't speak English, only Spanish, so ds knows her as abuela (grandma in Spanish). It at least saves on confusion as to which grandma we are talking about.

  • My parents will be Nona and Gadget (because my dad is obsessed with having the latest and greatest tech) and my DHs parents are Grandpa and some stupid made up name for his mom that I have no idea how to spell. Some of the grand kids are already grown out of her little pet name for herself and they just say Grandma so that's probably what my LO will use. Just the youngest uses the other name at this point.

  • First grandchild for my parents so they picked their names. Dad wants to be Granddad and my mom is still deciding but I think this week is swaying towards Noni (grandma in Italian).

In laws will probably be just grandma and grandpa, they haven't requested anything nor do I think they will.

  • My mom is Amma and my dad is Grandpa. My MIL goes by Mimi, but it's a slight problem. Our dog name is Mia and my son just calls the dog Mimi. My MIL lives 10 hours away and has only seen my son 4 times in the 22 months of his life so it hasn't been an issue yet.
  • My parents were already called poppy and nanny by my nephews. I told DH's parents they could choose whatever they wanted. They never decided on anything so DS ended up calling them pawpaw and granny. My mil hates being called granny because her mother is still alive and that's what they call her but she refused to pick anything else.
  • Both sets are grandma and papa.
  • I want my mom to be a nana, but idk how she feels about it. My dad said as long as the baby doesn't call him asshole he's ok with whatever. (Funny man huh?) SOs mom will probably just be grandma.

  • both my husband and i called each of our sets of grandparents the regular old "grandma ___" and "grandpa ____" when we were little, and still to this day even as adults.  our kiddo calls my parents the same thing, and he had been calling my husband's parents grandma and grandpa as well until a few months ago when he changed to "granddad" instead.  it's kind of cute, actually!  we had never intended to do anything different, but he sort of called the shots and we just rolled with it.
  • My parents will be Grandma and Grandpa and DH's parents are Portuguese so they will be called Vovo (grandma) and Voovoo (grandpa-- which is actually spelled the same way as vovo, but it's pronounced voovoo).
    image
  • My dad and stepmom are Opa and Oma (my stepmom is Dutch), my mom and her SO are bachan and geichan (my mom is 1/2 Japanese) and DH's parents are Grampy and Grammy... We had decided on "Grammy" but DH's niece couldn't say it (even though my daughter could) so she goes by nanny to her.
    Wife to A; Mama to C (2009), N (2011), H (2014) & baby F due 09/16/16
  • My mom will really be the only grandparent in my baby's life. She feels a little young to be called grandma so baby will be encouraged to call her Mimi but there's a chance he'll just call her what he wants. My nephew insisted on calling my mom grandma so we shall see.
  • DS is the first grandchild on both sides, so it was all up to us. MIL and FIL are just grandma and grandpa. My dad wanted to be paw paw, because that's what we called his late dad. That stuck. My mom wanted to be nana, but DS turned it into Neena and she loves its' uniqueness.

  • My MIL goes by nana and FIL goes by granddaddy for the 15 other grandchildren on that side, so that's what this LO will call them.

My mom wants to go by meemaw and wants her husband to be peepaw.  I think this is kindof silly, but it's her first grandchild and she was very excited to choose her grandma name so we're going with it.

My dad hasn't requested anything special for himself or his girlfriend, but his family traditionally uses grandma and grandpa so that'll probably be what we choose for them.
  • Grandpa or Grandma _________
  • Both sets already have grandchildren, but I don't like the name Nana.  It makes me think of bananas.  They'll both just be called grandma and grandpa.
  • We have a ham-ma, grandma, grandpa, abuelita, buelito, pop pop, and bobci. There are already grandchildren so these names were given before my daughters arrival.

  • My parents are nana and grampy. ILs are nana and papa.
  • My parents are Gran Jan and T-Pop, and my ILs are GiGi and PawPaw. At 22 mo, DD clearly says GiGi and PawPaw, but says "Jay" and "Pop" for my parents.

  • My parents- grams and gramps
    His parents- honey and pops

  • DS is the first grandchild on both sides of our family, so the names we use for grandparents have basically been set by him. My parents are Nene(which he somehow made up from Grammie) and Pa. FIL is Grandpa first name and stepMIL is Honey (her request). MIL is Grandma & stepFIL is Grandpa first name, but DS only wants to call him by his first name (which MIL hates). He is closest to my parents, and this has definitely shown up in how he refers to them.

  • My parents will be grandma and grandpa. DH's parents will be mémère and pépère because they are French Canadian and that's the term used in their family.
