If you live in a wet/cold climate and have a play structure. . .

Do your kids play on it much besides during the summer months? I'm trying to decide if we should put one in. I love our backyard because it is super private and beautiful. I would like to spend more time back there, but the kids never want to. They insist on going in front to the culdesac because they can ride bikes. I think they are just bored in the backyard because there isn't much to do. It is sloped in most areas so they can't play soccer or run very easily. We do have one flat spot in the side yard that would work for a play structure though.

My concern is that we live near Seattle and it is often either raining or just wet outside. We have no problem being outside when it is wet, but I would be concerned about the wood becoming slippery and the kids just not wanting to play on it during those months. We have great summers, but they are short and we are usually really busy, so I'm not as desperate for things to do.

  • We have a plastic one that has a couple swings and a slide.  We leave it out all year and it's perfectly fine throughout our short summer.

  • We have a medium sized wooden one and my kids play on it all the time. I am in New England and right up until it is bitterly cold/rainy they play on it. Even now they like to slide down it into the snow. It has held up well for the past 2 winters.

  • We have a Rainbow playset and we seal it every summer and it is fine.  They last forever.  DH was out there pushing DD on the swing and they were going down the slide today.  I assume when she is old enough to climb like she would need to in her snow gear that she'll be big enough to get up the steps without trouble in the snow.
Hallelujah, it's a miracle, I have children AND a signature!

  • My kids will swing in any kind of weather. So I think a play set is totally worth it. I mean, they aren't climbing the ladder when in full snow gear but they throw snowballs at the slide and sit on the swings still.

Love having a backyard set. There are so many moments when I say "you're nuts - everyone outside!" Even if it's just 10 minutes before dinner it's always worth it.
