Tommy Tippee bottles for EBF baby?

I'm on "breast rest" to allow my one nip to heal. As a result, I'm pumping and introducing a bottle. I gave Mason his first bottle this morning using a Tommy Tippee bottle with a stage 1 slow flow nipple. It seemed way too fast - milk was literally dripping out and he was choking.

Anyone else experience this problem with these? It was recommended by a dr who specializes in bf'ing. They have a vary flow nipple would that be better? Other bottle recs?

Re: Tommy Tippee bottles for EBF baby?

  • We are doing a mix of BFing, pumping, and formula and bought these bottles to try. LO has a hard time getting the large nipple into his mouth and milk/formula ends up dripping all over until he gets a good latch. It makes such a mess so we probably won't be using them much longer.

  • My baby likes the Tommee Tippee bottles and never has a problem with excessive milk spillage or too fast of a flow...

I mean, obviously the flow is still faster than the breast but it doesnt make him choke.
  • My daughters both took the TT bottles without a problem... a variable flow nipple wouldn't be slower than a stage 1 slow flow, it would just allow you to have a faster flow from the same nipple by how you hold it.

Stage 1 slow flow would be TT's slowest nipple, so your LO might just do better with a different bottle brand, possibly one with a preemie nipple, or they might just need a few more bottles to get used to it.  Make sure when you do bottle feed that you give a lot of burp breaks- at least every ounce.
  • I'm using the same bottles as you. This happens to M when he lying completely flat so I now prop him up and this stopped. Also have you squeezed the velve inside to see that it is still open so the bottle can vent and let air out?
  • I have to hold Nora up a good bit and that seems to help. I used the same bottles with my older DD and didn't have that problem. Maybe something has changed? Or maybe my Nora is just a little pig haha. It seems like she is sucking way too fast but she got mad when I tried another bottle with a slower flow.
  • Practice paced feedings with the Tommee Tippee bottles. If the flow is still too fast Dr. Brown's makes a preemie nipple that has a slower flow.
  • I had the same rec for the same issue. The first time I fed this happened. Like PP mentioned try paced feedings, it helps her slow down and swallow it's also helpful to prop them so they aren't fully reclined. She still has a bit of dribble at some feedings, but nothing like that first. She gets hiccups post bottle sometimes too. They're so little right now bottle feeding will definitely involve a learning curve!

  • We use Tommee Tippee with Ari when she was in NICU and staff was doing her feedings, either formula or breast milk. Slow flow nipples as well. Given that we're 35+ mins into a BF session now that we're home, they are GREAT for EBF babies. Haven't had flow issues though.

Our Lactation Consultant recommended these bottles.  She said to hold the bottle nearly horizontal so the sucking pulls milk in, not gravity.  You could also try different angles at which you hold your baby.  We had ours nearly upright and he does better at 45 degree angle with the suck-swallow-breathe pattern.
  • I thought (?) I was doing paced feeding: he was sitting up on my lap and I held the bottle nearly horizontally. (Doesn't holding the bottle this way increase gas? He kept sucking air this way, so I had to tilt more to keep the milk in the nipple).

Even doing this, he kept sputtering and dribbling milk everywhere. Maybe it just takes practice...

  • I have no real advice about the bottles, but it does take a little time to get used to a bottle for a baby AND also when DS is sleepy or just being lazy he still has milk fall out and/or chokes.
  • I'm using como tomo bottles. I heard about them on you tube and found them at Walgreens. they are super easy to clean and the nipples are really soft and look just like a breast. I bought the nipples on amazon. com stage 1 and it's slow flow I believe. I breast and bottle feed and she hasn't been confused at all.

I have a dentist appt Monday, so introduced the first bottle today. I used a Medela 5 oz bottle with the slowest flow nipple (DH actually gave it). DD took nearly 3 oz with absolutely no issues and the flow was perfect for her. I had no problems with them with DD1 either.

Tommee Tippee does make bottles to reduce colic. 2/3rds of mine are this type. Little pieces to clean but worth it if gas is a concern.

  • I do have the same issue with my 3 week old sometimes it just comes out superfast- he is getting used to it tho. LC said tomee tippee is good for switching back and forth.
  • Since my post, I gave him a second bottle which went much better. Guess it's just a matter of practice makes perfect! It just threw me when the bottle dripped milk before I even gave it to the little guy.

  • At my work I have a parent that uses medela calma bottles. The one time we have used a bottle we used this one and the milk does not come out unless the baby sucks. The nipples are 18 dollars but if you are looking for a slower flow I suggest this bottle.
  • I tried a bottle today with LO for the first time today.  We used the Tommy Tippee bottle.I had DH give it to her and he said that she dribbled all over herself while she was eating.  I may try the natural Avent bottle next to see if she does better with that (I also have the Medela Calma nipple so we may try that one as well).

    Sorry to thread jack

Does the medela calma fit all medela bottles?

I believe so, it fits the two different medela bottles we have. I also highly recommend it- it's helped reduce nipple preference for us. Worth the money IMHO.
