Peanut butter poo before solids?

Sorry if this has been asked before. So my daughter is just about 5 months and still EBF. For the past week or two her poops have been getting thicker, almost to what I would potentially consider peanut butter consistency. But my understanding was that we wouldn't hit that phase til she started solids. Am I going crazy or do I really need to start rinsing her diapers before tossing them in the pail/wet bag now?

  • Personally, I would at least plop out what is ploppable. It should still be water soluble, but it might be asking too much of your washer to get it to dissolve and drain a PB turd in the pre-rinse.

  • I would get rid of what you can. I wasn't rinsing the occasional PB poo diaper because it wasn't super thick. I had a glob of poo in my washer after the rinse. It was gross.

  • Also, does she go to daycare or does anyone else watch her? If so, I would bet money someone is slipping her goodies thinking you won't know. For us, just a minimal amount of solids turned his poo very quickly.

  • Thanks for the replies, seems like we need to start rinsing. She doesn't go anywhere, I take her to work with me and sometimes she stays at home with DH.
  • We randomly had some "thicker" poos before introducing solids. But it usually returned to the normal EBF poos quickly.

Like @doeie04 I was concerned that someone was feeding him something else as well. But after conferring with the BF board... It seems like flukes can happen.

Here's to hoping poos return to normal! Else buy a sprayer early since you'll likely want one in a month or two anyway.

  • So I guess no one agrees with my epiphany huh.
I thought it was interesting but I just didn't have anything to add.

We "delayed" starting to 6 months because we were watching closely for food allergies and I was already doing a pretty extreme elimination diet. PB poo seemed to appear once he started eating significant amounts of solids, so I never questioned it.
  • I like you theory, but don't have enough experience to prove or disprove. We are almost to 6 months and poop seems to be getting thicker and we are still EBF, but we are fighting some sort of unidentifiable illness. I had related it to the illness. It also turned his poop kind of green in the last day. I'll have to keep an eye on that.

  • My DD has been having the occasional thicker poo for a month now and she is EBF. I just thought I was eating too much cheese. Now that my cheese intake is down, her poop is runny again. I preferred that thicker poo. Haha
