Cookie and bread trick

Do you ladies know the bread trick for making cookies softer, especially if they go stale? You put a piece of bread in with the cookies, and somehow, they suck the moisture out of the bread and get super soft. My mom shared this with me a couple of years ago when I stored cookies in a non-airtight container by mistake. I thought it sounded like an old wives tale, but it totally works.
