Twins AFTER A/S?

Sorry this is LONG! Turn back now if you don't feel like reading my dumb question. I don't blame you. Lol

Okay so this may be a stupid question but do you ladies know of anyone who has found out they were having twins AFTER the anatomy scan? And you guys may think I'm an idiot but at my 16 week, my OB did an ultrasound and said girl. Which was obviously just a guess based on what he saw so far. Which I agreed with and saw it too. (Sorry I don't have pics) and then at my 20 week, my OB looked again and said he was 99% sure it was girl and from what I could see, I agreed. Well I went to my anatomy scan the next day and he was definitely. all. boy. Multiple shots. All boy. And guys, I'm huge. I'm a first time mom at 23 weeks and people are amazed that I'm only 5 months. And at first I was like maybe I shouldn't eat so many Oreos. Lol but I don't think that's it. I've ony gained 10 pounds and my stomach is hard and tight. And I was pretty slim before this. Please don't think I'm being an ass about the size thing. It just fuels my curiosity as to whether or not there's really two babies in there.

Anyway. Sorry if this is dumb. Sorry it was so long. I'd post some cake pictures as a reward but they'd probably be sideways. And cake you have to work to see is LAME. Thank you ladies!

  • At this point, you've likely had enough blood drawn and ultrasound views that they would have noticed. If you had any kind of testing during the first tri, your HCG levels would likely have been way higher than for a singleton. I've never heard of it happening, but I'm sure stranger things have happened. But in all honestly, it's very unlikely if you've been receiving standard/ competent prenatal care.

  • I'd say it's extremely unlikely, too. I'm sure it's not 100% impossible as it has probably happened to someone somewhere, but 99.9999 percent of the time, they would be able to see the two babies. Baby was probably at an angle that blocked the boy parts. It's pretty common for a "girl" to "turn" into a boy, but not as common the other way around. (I'm using quotes because I don't know how to say that any better, hah.)

  • Phew! Thank goodness. Not that two babies wouldn't be a complete blessing but the idea that I'd have to buy two of everything would be a bit daunting. Thank you ladies for the responses. I'll just tell people to eff off from now on when I get comments like, you're not even gonna be able to walk at 9 months!
  • I had a friend who found out she was having twin boys at 21 weeks, after three ultrasounds.  The second baby was hiding behind the first baby.

  • Your doctors/technicians would know.  Trust me.  There was no way they could miss two babies at the AS.  The AS takes a little longer because sometimes they have to go through one baby to get to the other (if that makes sense).  On all our u/s we saw clearly two babies.  Congratulations on your healthy boy!

  • I guess it could happen. I'm having twins, though it has been very clear from my first US that that was the case. And the further along I've gotten the more obvious it is to see that I have twins on US. One is on the left the other is on the right. When looking at abdominal (or head) circumference you can clealy see the other twins little belly right beside.
  • My BFF is pregnant with twins, and even with only two US's, it's completely clear that it's two babies... You can see them both in the little separate areas, growing away.... She's bigger than her two previous singleton pregnancies, but not by tons and tons. However, I'm good friends with a girl that was a surprise triplet, lol...

  • @katiegummow thank you! I'm very excited about my son!
  • I have had so many people in my family ask if I'm REALLY sure that I'm not having twins. Every time I say over and over that I've had 4 ultrasounds and there is no way this would have been missed. I'm always met with doubtful looks. Apparently no one in my family has any faith in ultrasounds. I, however, am sure there is zero way a second baby would be missed on that many ultrasounds. Maybe I'm wrong and this really does happen these days? But it would be crazy to hear of that!

  • There is absolutely no way a second baby would be missed at an AS. For mine you could see both babies in almost every shot (even when focusing on only one).

  • After mass amounts of googling I did find a cases of missed twins with the mom finding out at 39.5 weeks. It seems most women who have a missed twin find out during an anatomy scan. Missed triplets and quads are much much more common.
  • You had a 16w u/s, then a 20w u/s, and another u/s (billed as the anatomy scan) the very next day??

Forgive me, but I don't understand why your OB would give you an u/s 24 hours before your scheduled anatomy scan.

I really doubt you have a stealth ninja twin hiding in there. Ultrasound technology is very good these days.

  • As someone who has been pregnant with triplets, having that many U/S, and especially your A/S, they would have noticed if there was more than one baby by now.

Does your OB do an U/S at every appointment (instead of using the Doppler)? That's how I'm assuming you've had so many U/S.

While I, like many others, think this would be a little far-fetched, I do have to admit that I can't discount it completely. My great-aunt had that happen to her. She had 3 x-rays during her pregnancy (in 1973), and she didn't expect anything other than a healthy baby. She carried very small, even though she had 3 older children. By the time she went into labor at 41 weeks, she had only gained 7 lbs. She gave birth to a healthy 6 lb boy, and a few minutes later - when she was delivering what they expected to be her placenta - she delivered an 8 lb healthy baby boy. They had no idea whatsoever that she was pregnant with twins, and the larger of the 2 boys was supposedly hiding behind the smaller one, but the smaller one was seen on x-rays. I would think that technology is much more advanced now. Even just on Monday, I had an appointment with a midwife because our regular OB was out of town, and the midwife was shocked at how big my uterus feels, and she swore she felt 2 babies. I told her that I've had 4 ultrasounds in the past 5 months, and not a single one has shown twins, and she said "stranger things can happen". She commented that we are having a really big baby for her to be feeling him so "spread out". We are having an ultrasound tomorrow because she and our OB want to see exactly HOW big he is. I will pee my pants to see a twin this late in the game. I'm still certain that we are having a gigantic singleton boy. My husband and I both topped the charts when we were born, so this guy has bigness in his genes.

When my mom was pregnant with my brother, her OB was out of town and she had an appointment with the midwife that works in his office and she also SWORE my mom was having twins. Turns out my brother was just huge. 11lbs when he was born. Didn't have gestational diabeties or anything, just a crazy big baby and my mom is a petite woman.
Let us know how your appointment goes!

OP I'm sure stranger things have happened: but as everyone said it is highly unlikely! You should tell your OB your thoughts and (s)he can maybe show you how they know you're not carrying twins.
