Wind Instruments

Hello everyone, I play trumpet and I've been wondering if it's ok to continue playing as long as my body isn't showing any signs of discomfort? Does anyone else play a wind instrument who may have some insight on this topic?

Totally fine! Especially since if you play in an ensemble you're generally in the back where it's less loud. I'm a music teacher with plenty of pregnant/mommy friends. I would still be playing except I felt too crappy when rehearsals started up this fall! If you played before you got pregnant, your body should be fine keeping it up :)

Eta: worth running it past your dr at your next apt anyway!

  • Thanks I'll check with my doctor to be sure.
  • It shouldn't take any more effort between your abdominal muscles and your diaphragm than it would for a trained singer, and I know ladies that continued to sing when pregnant. I would say you are fine.

It’s not that I don’t like you, it’s that I don’t know you. Stranger Danger.

exactly my first thought too. LOL! it doesn't help that I've had a lot of practice in this dept recently. I think I'm broken.

  • I'm a woodwind myself, I played the flute and piccolo in school. Now I mostly just sing with a local community chorus.

Lol, I'm definitely killer at this instrument too
  • In all seriousness, I played clarinet in school and sing. I don't see anything harmful about continuing to do any of those things but you might notice that as baby encroaches on your lung space that your wind capacity might not be what it used to be. I don't think you could do any harm to the baby.

Happy tooting. :) ok sorry, I couldn't resist.
