Blood in brain/seizures..

My newborn is having seizures as a result of blood in her brain. Does anyone have experience with this??

Re: Blood in brain/seizures..

  • Congrats on your new little one! My oldest, 3.5, had a grade I IVH. Did they tell you how severe the bleed is?

  • No experience with seizures, but my daughter had a grade 4 bleed which resulted in hydrocephalus for which she has a VP shunt. I hope they can get the seizures under control!

My son wasn't a preemie either.  He was born at 39 w 1day with a Grade I IVH and a hemotoma on the frontal lobe.  Both were reabsorbed by 3 months.  He was in the NICU for 9 days because of suspected seizure activity but he never had a seizure until recently (he's 3.5).  Have they discussed whether the blood can be reabsorbed?

  • I's a RN and I work NICU. It really depends on what caused the brain bleed. This can be caused from some sort of trauma, was her delivery difficult? If she had any issues right after delivery like low apgars or low blood sugar this could have caused her brain to be without adequate oxygen or glucose and caused her to have a seizure. Many times blood on the brain can just reabsorb after time, but alot is dependant on why she has a brain bleed.
  • My second son had an "insult" in utero that deprived him of oxygen (which is code for no one knows what happened in there).  He was born via emergency c-section at full term with low blood sugar, trouble breathing, an initially low apgar and had tons of seizures starting about 6 hours after birth.  He had a grade 2 IVH and a brain injury from the oxygen deprivation.  We were in the NICU for about a month.

I hope things improve with your new little girl and remember that babies (especially their brains) are amazingly resilient.  Hang in there.

Carson Henry, born 39w, 2d, via emergency c/s due to no fetal movement and fetal distress.  Seizures, IVH grade 2, brain injury, kidney and liver damage.  Complete blood clot in the artery in his right arm.  27 days in the NICU.  Now discharged from all specialists, excepts his kidney doctor, who will monitor him indefinitely.  My tough little cookie.

  • It turns out thy were wrong about blood and she was born with some kind of tumor-doctors think its benign but we are awaiting results of the biopsy-I'm so scared especially bc seizures are still not completely controlled and she's already on 3 meds....

So sorry!  The unknown is simply terrifying.  Hang in there and keep us posted.
